Interesting piece of information from Club James Bond France.

Will this be the return of the villains' deadly critters? It's been a long time, I think the last time was with Sanchez's shark in LICENCE TO KILL.

That's pretty cool if it proves true.

Also, Naomi Harris is once again trying to get the press to understand that she is NOT playing Moneypenny.  Also, her character Eve will apparently have a very Fleming-esque surname that is being kept secret for the time being.

She also said that Mendes was going to go for a lighter tone than the last two. Maybe nothing drastic from the looks of it, I'm guessing what she means is there will be a little more imagination and color after the last two, especially QOS. Stuff like the villains having a deadly critter kind of supports Craig's comment on SKYFALL being more of a classic Bond entry "Bond with a capital B".

Speaking of the surname, I assume it's going to be more of a classic suggestive name rather than one everyone might recognize. Though they already did that with the last movie keeping Gemma Arterton's first name Strawberry a secret.

I'm all for a lighter tone akin to one of Moore's films, so long as we get a coherent plot and not the bundled mess of a story we got for QOS.

Whoot! That makes me happy. I don't want these movies to tip over into the ridiculous camp of the Moore years or the moronic shenanigans of Brosnan, but QoS was (among its other faults) skating close to being too self-important, and was way too generic. Bond should have a larger-than-life quality. I think of Mendes as a more restrained filmmaker, so I doubt he'll tip over into self-parody, but I'm glad he's pushing in that direction.

If they eventually go to the same kind of flicks Moore made after Craig is finished I would be fine with that as long as it's done right. What the Brosnan films got wrong was trying to combine the camp with melodrama. DIE ANOTHER DAY had a villain wearing a goofy looking gadget suit while at the same time dealing with issues with his father. I say they should either go one way (the route CASINO ROYALE has taken) or the other (what LIVE AND LET DIE went with).

I won't get caught up in "serious" vs "camp" and I doubt I'm going to read McWeeny's "I, I, I, me, my, I" reviews of all 22 films, but what I will say is that we need a return of what I would call for lack of a better term "Fleming kink." Anyone who's read him knows what I mean. Example: drowning a girl in oil is Fleming Kink; the rest of the movie is not.

And there's a slight, not-quite-appropriate ethnocentrism line in Fleming's stuff that these films can skirt without being horribly racist and without making all their villains generic Eurotrash. I know it's outdated but I read them all in 2005/2006 and I can get a fun thrill here and now without endorsing the antiquated shit.

That's a perfect example of the kind of fascinating subtext buried under idiocy that made DAD, and to a lesser extent the other Brosnans, so frustrating. There was clearly an attempt to deal with actual ideas in an over-the-top, comic booky way, but they get raised and then immediately dropped. Even Goldeneye basically asks "What does Bond do after the Cold War?" and then forgets to answer.

In DAD's case there's a ton of great raw material that gets wasted, particularly the idea of Bond having to cope cut off from MI6. And the villains are a nearly perfect metaphor--actually, it's so unsubtle I'm not sure it even counts as a metaphor--for Hollywood's tendency to "racewash" (in the same movie that features Halle Berry as a Bond girl). If they'd actually explored that a little I would have absolutely adored that movie's goofiness. As it is, I think the climactic moment where the bad guy's dad asks "My son...what have you done to yourself?!?" is actually kind of powerful. That's the kind of collision of batshit insanity and actual thoughtfulness that Bond should be aiming for, I think.

You can pretty much guarantee that the series will dip back into the Moore-esque well at some point, likely when we get another actor in the role.  As long as it is more The Spy Who Loved Me and less A View To A Kill, I have absolutely no problem with that.

The biggest problem with the Brosnan films is that they tried to do both.  They tried to be serious AND campy (especially in the latter two).............and that just doesn't work.  In the long run, you just end up with films that are bland as hell.  Vanilla Bond, if you will.

I listened to all the audio books around 2008-2009, and I enjoyed them all, save for The Spy Who Loved Me.  After hearing the same British guy do them all, and then having a woman (because it's from a woman's perspective) read that one, it really threw me off and took me forever to get through it.  Listening to "Live and Let Die" would make me cringe from time to time, though.  I never knew "negress" was an actual word people used until I listened to that Bond book.

I'm just looking forward to a new Bond movie.  I like Craig, and I loved Casino Royale.  QoS was a bit convoluted, but I still enjoyed it.  That opening scene was great, especially when you find out Mr. White was in the trunk the whole time.

On Archer, he used the term "quadroon" which I'd never heard and had to look up. What's the deal with these secret agents?

They have a license to be dicks, apparently.

Ha ha, I had completely forgotten about that.  I was even looking for that episode a few weeks ago in Netflix because my son was doing a report about the Civil War, etc., and I told him there was an ep of Star Trek with Abraham Lincoln.  Sort of glad I didn't find it...

I thought Casino Royale hit the right balance. It has beautiful cinematography and lush locations. There were points where there was a high class element at play.

The larger than life Bond elements were there with Le Chieffs bleeding eye and scar. That said, it had a reason, and fed into the storyline. If a villain is getting a scar for just having one, and it doesn't add to his character in any way, there is no point.

QOS was a tad bit generic, but it could of loosened up the camera angle a little. Just slow things down at times. I understand Bond is angry after the events of the previous movie, but the script seemed a little off (yeah there was a strike) but I would place QOS over any of Brosnan's films except GoldenEye.

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
For the first time since THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS, we'll have a climax with Bond and cohorts (this time SAS officers) raiding the bad guys. Here are photos and videos of the rehearsal. This is one the things I hoped for out of this entry, I'm glad to see Craig's Bond will be leading commandos like his predecessors (except Brosnan, he never got that chance).

There is quite a strong element of masochism in Fleming's Bond novels. Bond usually goes through something quite hellish at some point in the story. Dr No is a good example, with Bond crawling through some kind of nightmare obstacle course. It's always cool when the movies pick up on this.

One of the most famous scenes from the movies is when Bond is going to get his balls lazered on that steel platform. And I thought the best scene in Casino Royal was when Le Chiffre was bashing Bond's balls with the knotted rope. That's when Bond's essential qualities come through. Despite terrible suffering and  threat and to his well being (and family jewels), he keeps his nerve and control.

I hope Skyfall finds Bond in some kind of terrible peril.

Anyone have any info as to when a teaer trailer will be  released?? It's almost April so I firgure that it should be coming pretty soon. As I recall both CR and QOS had teasers hit right around this time of the year.

I'd put money on a teaser showing up with Men In Black III.

That or Spider-Man. Both the previous Bonds had their teasers released right at the end of June. MI3 and Spider-Man are Sony's biggest films so either is a good bet.

The CASINO ROYALE teaser actually came out May 1st. It's likely the one for SKYFALL will premiere with MIB3.

Daniel Craig Promises 'Skyfall' Won't Be An Emo Bond Flick
Quote:
James Bond fans fear not, there will be plenty of action in the much-anticipated upcoming Bond flick, "Skyfall."

For months, the rumor mill had Oscar-winning director Sam Mendes stripping away the action for the 23rd Bond movie in order to make a more dramatic movie that reflected the emotional depth of the characters.

But when MTV News recently visited the London set of "Skyfall", James Bond himself, Daniel Craig, was quick to dispel those rumors, assuring fans that he and Mendes have struck a balance between drama and the action that Bond flicks are known for.

"I sat down with Sam Mendes two years ago, three years ago — now it's getting on four — and we discussed what we wanted to do and how we wanted to do it, and he's one of the biggest Bond fans around," said Craig, who's taking on the 007 role for the third time.

"He's not out to do an angst-ridden movie, some chamber piece about people's emotions," Craig continued. "It's a Bond movie. But we both agreed that if he cast the film, which he did really well, and we brought in older characters and new characters, that we'd have something really rich and sort of exciting to watch."

The cast includes Judi Dench (playing "M" for the seventh time), Ralph Fiennes in a mysterious role and Oscar winner Javier Bardem.

"I think it's a James Bond movie and this movie is going to have everything that any James Bond fan would expect and even more," Bardem told us. "Also the emotional aspect of it and the action aspect of the movie as well, it's going to contain a lot of surprises for the audience."

And Bardem should know what fans want as a longtime fan of the franchise. "I've seen many, many James Bond movies," he said. "It's fun to be part of one of them. It's really fun, but again, it's also about the people ... around this movie that is really exciting to work with — amazing cast, a great director and great character to play. It's a very serious movie, it's very solid."

Bond fans can catch all the "Skyfall" action when it hits theaters November 9.

Daniel Craig really needs to learn that you under promise and you over deliver.  I don't get why he always goes out of his way to say "this will be a good one, promise!  Like Casino Royale!"  He's done this a number of times on Skyfall.

That's probably how he genuinely feels. Ever since the script development he's been on record stating that he asked for the third film to have a lighter touch such as more humor, which is probably wise after how many complained that QOS was relatively dry of it.

That and they've been working with Sam Mendes on it for four damn years.  It had BETTER be as good as Casino Royale.  They've had plenty of time to get it right, so there's no excuse of a rushed production (QoS) to fall back on this time.

The teaser trailer has just been viewed at CinemaCon, I'm wondering if Sony is gonna debut it much sooner now that it seems to have been finished. Debuting it with THE AVENGERS would be a smarter move than waiting a whole month to put it in front of one of their titles.

This article describes what happens in the teaser http://insidemovies.ew.com/2012/04/25/cinemacon-2012-james-bond-not-interested-in-games-in-first-trailer-for-007s-skyfall/
post #192 of 506

Like the word association game and it also gives me that CR feel where we see a no nonsense Bond who isn't looking to screw around but just wants to be a badass.

Based on that EW description I guess its safe to say that Fiennes won't be playing a baddie.

Thought it was pretty much confirmed that the teaser would play with MIB?

It was, but I do find it strange they'll hold it back for that flick instead of release it alongside THE AVENGERS which has much bigger buzz than MEN IN BLACK III. Then again they could have done the same for QUANTUM OF SOLACE for the release of THE DARK KNIGHT four years ago but they went with HANCOCK instead. I guess SONY only keeps it in the family.

Anyway, here's a recent article I found most interesting, especially Mendes' comments on the later Fleming books: http://movies.yahoo.com/news/007-film-depict-spys-inner-demons-171114370.html

Here's the video of the press conference

MI6 can reveal that the wait for long awaited teaser poster for the new James Bond film, 'Skyfall', is almost over.

The poster will be revealed to coincide with the James Bond 50th anniversary movie screenings at the Cannes Film Festival, which takes place between 16th and 27th May 2012.

In a Bond production year, the Carlton Hotel is traditionally adorned with 007 livery.

Fans will also get to see the first theatrical teaser trailer for Daniel Craig's third outing as 007 on the 25th May when Sony attach the preview to "Men In Black 3". It is expected to debut online on the same day.

Five James Bond films will screen in new digital versions as part of the Cinema de la Plage screenings. The celebration will kick off with a 50th anniversary screening of "Dr No" directed by Terence Young and starring Sean Connery and Ursula Andress. It will be followed by screenings of "From Russia With Love", "Diamonds Are Forever", "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" and "Casino Royale". This is the first time a James Bond film has screened during the festival.

Nice to see some love for DIAMONDS from EON.
