Computer and Videgames just posted this commentary on seeing the first trailer for the game (hopefully someone will put it online soon). It sounds good, especially the little mention of MacReady:
The Thing There’s been lots of talk about this one, but little shown. And until now, we’ve had our reservations about this game. It would have to be incredible to live up to fan expectation, but having seen the trailer we can honestly say, "You’ve gotta be f**kiing kidding," before torching a head scuttling along the floor. It looks terrifyingly awesome.
It opens right where the film ends. A helicopter landing at the ruined base in Antarctica. John Carpenter’s chilling soundtrack pulsing in the background. Could be just a good trailer, but the tension was spot on. Commandos clamber out, steam rising from their mouths. Radio messages crackle on about ‘no contact in 30 days’ and ‘something happening.’ Then we see the exact same ice block that that the frozen Thing was cut from in the film. There’s dark corridors with just flares to light the way. Scuttling heads, monsterous twisted abominations with dog heads bursting from their chests. Machine guns, flame throwers, and then we see a bearded figure, sitting covered in frost and the voice goes "It’s McReady..." Excitied yet?
Universal Interactive Studios explained the Trust and Fear mechanic they’re using in the game, and it does sound good. The gameplay is squad-based. But like the movie, you need to have the trust of your colleagues. If they start thinking you’re The Thing, they’re going to turn on you. And if their fear rises too high, they’ll go insane and attack everyone. It sounds spot on to the film. And yes, there are blood tests in it. There’s going to be more details revealed in October as they build up to a Spring 2002 release.
