Who loves Indie Films?

Thread Starter

Hey guys - I figured rather than starting a thread on a particular title - it'd be of more use to start a Indie genre thread.

So I recently saw ALBATROSS - story of a rebel who befriends a shy girl. The rebel is a writer and gets creative writing advice from the shy girl's father - lo and behold, they have an affair and messes everything up :O

I mean obviously that's the barebones of the story but how the story is told and cinematically, the movie as a whole is great! I give it 7.5/10.

What other indie film recommendations do you guys have?

I really wanted to see The Exploding Girl. A similar film, from what I hear, is Ry-Russo Young's "You Won't Miss Me," which I recently saw and absolutely loved. It's a mostly improvisational drama about this one part-time actress who can't get her shit together, lost in a hazy of shitty boyfriends, alcoholism and cigarette smoke. She's Stella Schnabel (daughter of Julian), and it feels extremely autobiographical. There's one scene where she's "in character" but she's completely drunk and lighting up a cigarette in a hotel lobby as the concierge tries to kick her out, and soon you realize that it's 100% unscripted, and the hotel staff is blurred out. Befitting the genre, there's also a late cameo for Greta Gerwig. Just because.

Young has a new movie that was at Sundance, but I kinda wanna see more of Schnabel. She has a very small role in "Rampart."

Oh Greta Gerwig! Have you seen Noah Baumbach's GREENBERG with Ben Stiller and Greta Gerwig? One of my favorites films, and so is Baumbach's THE SQUID AND THE WHALE (Laura Linney, Jeff Daniels, Jesse Eisenberg and Owen Kline, Kevin's son)...

I could watch Gerwig in anything, even if she's the Zelig of the mumblecore movement.

I do think the Academy Awards should have a category allowed for microbudgeted films under $5 million, to give the needed recognition to filmmakers that work on such a small scale. Anyone have thoughts on this?
