Underworld-Awakening-2012-Movie-Banner-Poster-1-e1323706561153.jpg

One of my junkfood guilty pleasure franchises. Vamps VS werewolves. No Scott S this go-round. But Charles Dance and Stephen Rea???  Kate B in a catsuit... in 3D (just in time for a belated birthday present to me). I like the idea of a Lycan-hulk, but we'll see how well the CG beast comes off.

"Kate Beckinsale, star of the first two films, returns in her lead role as the vampire warrioress Selene, who escapes imprisonment to find herself in a world where humans have discovered the existence of both Vampire and Lycan clans, and are conducting an all-out war to eradicate both immortal species."

Since the events of Underworld: Evolution, Selene (Kate Beckinsale) was captured by Humans and has since been held captive in cryogenic suspension for the past 12 years, during which time the public and government bodies learn about the existance of Vampires and Werewolves and have begun political crusades and all-out wars in order to study and eradicate both immortal species. Selene manages to escape the facility, while at the same time Eve (India Eisley), a young Hybrid, also escapes.

New trailer's been out for about a week.

It's a lean 88 mins 25 secs.

I don't mind the series. Will be catching it next year.

I also consider this cinematic junkfood, but refuse to pay to see it. I saw Rise of the Lycans courtesy of my local library, and will be doing this film the same honor.

If it were another actress who couldn't seem to catch a break and was stuck falling back on a mediocre franchise, I'd feel bad.

But it's Kate Beckinsale, so who cares?

These movies are literally the only case where I am 100% not sure as to whether I've seen the first film, or the second film, or neither of them. I remember a lot of blue.

I also remember a gun or two being fired....because the eternal war between vampires and werewolves should be settled by firearms. It's an exciting creative decision there.

I'd say these films were the supervillains of the orange and teal phenom that so upsets our own mcnooj, but I am fairly certain there's not a bit of orange in any of these flicks.

This series and the Resident Evil movies seem to be in an endless chase for the Dreary Female-Led Action/Horror Franchise crown.   Whoever wins, we lose.

Saw the first one, and no offense to Rea or Dance, but not even the Great God Nighy got me to come back for more of this boredom.

And, as Agent Z points out, what could more imaginative and cinematically interesting than having supernatural creatures settle an eternal beef by means of urban firefights?

I thought the 2nd one was a slight improvement though.

No doubt, mostly due to bigger and badder monster bosses on both sides, considering (like RES EVIL) this franchise isn't much more than graphic novel/video game style posturing and plot lines. And yet, I can't quit them.

I've watched all of them (the first one in theaters even) in various states of mental ability, but to quote Louis CK as I watched the trailer I was thinking: "Why is this a thing? It needs to not be a thing."

I'll give it a go.  When it comes to junkfood franchises, you could do A LOT worse than these.

A lot worse = The god-awful Resident Evil films.

All I remember about past Underworld films is lots and lots of headache-inducing blue.  And shoddily directed firefights between immortal creatures.

I still don't understand why the White Wolf game company didn't sue the pants off the people behind this. Other than that I think I've seen the first two, I'm not entirely sure. Which says it all I guess.

Plus Kate Beckinsale, who's one of the most beautiful women alive, looked weird in the trailer.

Can you sue due to similar genre tropes? Vampires vs werewolves is fairly standard since Universal, Paul Naschy, a fun ep of The Real GB, and 70s Marvel Comics. Or is it "organized vampires vs organized werewolves" (warring tribes) that makes the game unique? I ask as someone who has never played a White Wolf RPG. Or is is the graphic novel visual aesthetic? Seems like they'd have as much of a leg to stand on as TSR suing Columbia Pictures for KRULL.

EDIT: According to google, they did take legal action. Funny quote I came across...

"perhaps Anne Rice should get into the ring and Sue White Wolf for stealing all her ideas.

Then the Stoker family can sue Rice. Then the Romani people can sue the Stokers!"

EDIT2: Holy crap the forums for those game sites are a scary place.

I guess Willy S should sue for the "doomed star-crossed lovers" theme too. Nevermind, his works are public domain! ;)
