WB gets right up to the point of production, can't quite pull the trigger.

This sounds like a combination of general anxiousness about overspending, and a lack of confidence in the project. But really, this project hasn't seemed to have any kind of genuine enthusiasm behind it for years. They just keep wheeling it out because they figure that someone out there would probably kinda want to see it, and it gets put on ice again and again just to rise lethargically from the dead all over again...

...And still, no-one can figure out who actually ever wanted this movie in the first place. This is where development hell gets reduced to development necrophilia.

I have no idea why the world would have needed this movie. I am glad it will not exist in our timeline

How do they look at the history of anime that's been white washed and remade as live action in the west and think this would be a good idea?

Admittedly I can only think of Fist of the Northstar and Crying Freeman (which was done twice!) but there's gotta be more that are so bad I haven't even heard of them.

Ah, the wonders of Dragonball: Evolution.  Domestic box office, a whopping $9.4M.

It's very simple:

Not stars.

WB knows this.

Very true, but I imagine that if SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN blows up you just know WB will be fast-tracking this bad boy with her front and centre.

See also...  STREET FIGHT: LEGEND OF CHUN-LI.

And I imagine this one's budget is a bit heftier.

I guess the WB have finally listened to the demands by anime fanboy's that the classics shouldn't be messed with. And they think 90 million is the budget for a live action "Akira " movie? Heck, that could only get you to the motorcycle chase scene, lol!!!

No, they apparently think $60m is the budget for a live action "Akira."

60 million would only cover the last 10 minutes of the Akira movie in my head, and that's probably another reason it SHOULDN'T be made.

Rodriguez could probably knock out an Akira movie for 60 million. With Danny Trejo as the General.

yup

As far as boring, generic pretty boys go, Garret Hedlund is one of the better ones.  I feel like he's Sam Worthington pre The Debt.  There's potential to be a real actor.

Either there's lots of misinformation about this movie being thrown around, or WB is playing Super Damage Control.

They've already contradicted the drop in budget from $90 million. Which makes sense, because this should be a somewhat expensive movie. However, they are claiming the cause for the production shutdown is from a needed re-write of the script. Which would be, oh, the eightieth re-write?

They also don't have a Tetsuo yet, having lost interest in Michael Pitt (what?) or Michael Pitt lookalike Dane DeHaan (who?).

The WB has already dropped the budget hammer on this, a $130 million "Arthur And Lancelot" movie from the director of fucking FRED CLAUS and starring two complete unknowns and a $120 million+ "Paradise Lost" that sounds like a TERRIBLE idea. Word is the "300" sequel is next.

You'd think this was a studio that was still churning out Harry Potters and Batmans each year.

Budgets are elastic, but $60 million for this is pretty retarded.  Yeah, this is doomed to fail, as Warners has no confidence in it.  They will second guess every decision (they already are) during scripting and shooting, test screen it to hell, slash it into a 85 minute limp dick of a movie and it will underperform like crazy from already low expectations.  I hear the script is fucking terrible anyway.  This really needed a filmmaker with a vision and the muscle to attract some A-listers and secure more appropriate funds for it, like Ridley and Prometheus.  Warner Brothers is the best studio in town and always has been, but sometimes they don't have a fucking clue.  You either bury it, or get out of the fucking way on a project this idiosynchratic.

Toby Kebbel, who was up for Tetsuo, rips the script and Warners a new one...

Glad an actor has the balls to speak his mind.

Balls, indeed.  Not only to do that to their faces, but to talk about it openly as well.

If the man currently starring in a Clash of the Titans sequel says your script is bad, yo, that script is BAD.

At this point, I just wanna see the makers of MACHINE GIRL, etc do a parody.
