KEVIN SMITH RE-ITERATES THAT HIT SOMEBODY IS THE END OF THE LINE

Do you believe it?

Ehh, we all know the score. In showbusiness, people only think they retire, but in 99% of cases they come back. I think Smith just needs time to go off and work out what kinds of movies he wants to make, because his last few smack of a guy who's lost any idea of it. I reckon he'll be back.

I want to believe it, if only so Kevin Smith will go the fuck back into his hole, and I can go back to ignoring him and his fanbase still trying to convince me that Dogma's, like, one of the best movies about religion, like, ever, man.

When the money dries up and Smith comes to his senses (i.e. not stoned) that he can't live off podcasting and telling the same stories about Jon Peters and Prince while shitting on other filmmakers, then yeah...he'll be back directing.

And the Internet will collectively look the other way and keep giving him what he wants: attention/press.

...or he could become another John Carpenter, more interested in smoking pot and watching sport on TV.

Some believe he became that some time ago.

In regards to this topic, I direct you to my avatar.

I don't think you should get to be a celebrity forever unless you've done something so awesome it will stand the test of time, or you're interesting in an ongoing way

Smith doesnt't fit either of those descriptions, so I sincerely hope that one day we can all just stop talking/thinking about him. At this point he's just some random guy who made some OK movies in the 90s. There is no reason he warrants this kind of continuous attention

I think he means it, at least for now.  AMC just greenlighted a reality show he is involved with and word is that he's got a talk show waiting for him on an undisclosed network once he finishes work on Hit Somebody.  Smith might be leaving theaters, but he's headed to TV.  He's not going anywhere.

If that crazy scene of Michael Parks at the end of Red State would be the last thing Kevin ever directed, I'd be a hell of a way to go out.

It's pretty messed up that Sean William Scott, Kevin's first choice for Hit Somebody, went on to do a different hockey themed comedy called Goon.

I have to admit, Up until about a year ago I was a huge fan of Kevin Smith but the guys ego is way out of whack and now I no longer care. Taking critics to task is just not dignified and the best reaction is silence...

Smith needs to get the fuck out of his own way so if that means he stops making films then so be it. Parts of Red State threaten to become great but then he fluffs the ending so completely that any chance I was willing to give him to impress me with something outside of his comfort zone evaporates completely...

Smith just needs to grow the fuck up more than anything else.

I think he just needs more time to smoke pot.

Used to be a fan of Smith, but I'm having a harder and harder time caring about anything he works on. More than anything, the artistic growth as a director just hasn't been there. I would be much more interested in seeing a Kevin Smith script directed by someone with actual chops. Then you might have something.

So long as that something's not Superman Lives.

It's so hip to pick on Kevin Smith.

He's really fat, too!!!  The bastard!!!

I don't even know what to say to you Scruff.  I'm speechless.

I don't hate him because he is fat.  I hate him because he wasted his talent and the golden opportunity given to him.

I don't hate the guy, I just don't give a shit about him.  Yet every time he opens his mouth people get all worked up.  It's like picking on Gary Busey - just kinda sad.

If Smith didn't spend years mouthing off about how other directors' movies were shit, pussy out with "Well...I'm not talented enough so why bother trying?" excuses and then moan/whine about how critics should pay to see his movies if they want to critique them (Something he never does when reviewing movies - a stance that didn't bother him when critics got to see Clerks, Chasing Amy and Dogma for free...and gave them glowing reviews) after he finally decides to experiment with studio fare and fails miserably, then I would agree with you.

All the hate he's gotten the last few years are of his own doing and like Tim, I too used to be a devoted fan of him and his work.

100% agreed.  I had Smith's back (to a certain degree).....................until Cop Out.  God, what a fucking piece of shit.  I'm not even sure I want to see Red State, at least not anytime soon.  Jersey Girl bombing wounded him deeply.  Zack & Miri tanking was practically a death-blow though.  It's going to take a long time for him to recover from it.  He still seems upset whenever it is brought up.  If Hit Somebody doesn't do well, I suspect he'll stay away from film for quite awhile.

The general criticism applied to Sucker Punch by most of the critical world is far better applied to Red State: Smith had something to say, but completely lacks the film language or the restraint to execute it.

He needs to STOP smoking pot.  Didn't his taking up the habit coincide with his sudden douchebagness?

From what I remember, he started smoking to deal with the pain of "Zack and Miri" bombing. And I do think that's when the douchebaginess started in earnest.

Whenever you need a substance to deal with a real world problem, it goes bad places.  I think the pot is just enabling his inner cry baby.  I never liked Smith's films.  Chasing Amy is pretty good, but that's about it.  He's a great raconteur though and maybe that will be a better career for him.

Smith had been laminating negative reviews of his films practically as soon as his career began; there was always an element of douchebaggery to him. Hitting weed harder over the years probably didn't do anything more than inspire him to wear his douchebaggery in public like a muscle shirt. A laminated muscle shirt.

Leave my beloved cannibas out of this. Smith has no one to blame but himself

That was kind of my point, he became a the man we all rag on today the moment he found weed.  There are some people who really can't handle that sort of thing.

Along with the Tim Burton story, that makes two predictable geek hate circlejerks in one day - christmas has come early for this place!

I don't hate on Smith anymore - it just took him longer than most to find his actual calling which is talking on podcasts and telling stories.  I think if he could go back and do it all over again he'd be better off doing stand-up than directing/writing movies.
