Well, in this case, it would be easy to not know that they are married, because they've done an excellent job of keeping the media out of their personal lives.

People are jumping to conclusions in assuming that he genuinely didn't know.  I think its at least equally likely that he just wouldn't acknowledge the marriage because he really, really, really didn't want it to be true.
