Why Pink Floyd?

Clearly, they don't need the cash but those Immersion boxsets are pretty impressive looking, the blu-ray disc almost makes me want get a blu-ray player (almost). I caved and bought the Dark Side Immersion edition and it's a sound lover's dream, so many different audio versions of Dark Side plus a live performance of Dark Side, I think the marbles and coasters were unnecessary along with the scarf but that's a minor quibble.

Floyd have finally opened up the vaults, I'm hoping we'll get decent sounding live performances, they should start with the BBC sessions. The remastered versions of Meddle and Animals are great, I'm still on the fence about the Immersion set of Wish You Were Here.

God damn it if I had just a little more money I'd rock the shit out of these sets.

I mean god damn...

...and am I the only guy who even today still wants this poster?...

I've seen those sets around, they're absolutely beautiful. It makes me glad that I'm not excessively into Floyd so the tempatation isn't as strong.

If the Zappa family or someone like Devin Townsend tried anything like this? Financially speaking, I would be a dead man.

I don't know, I love Pink Floyd, but I've got what really matters to me:  the music.  Don't know if I really need all that other stuff.

I've got that poster somewhere.  I was working at a music store at the time and we got a bunch of free promos of it.

I've seen these immersion sets at my local Best Buy.  Had they come out about 10 years ago, I'd buy them.  I hardly buy any physical media anymore (especially not music), and I'm trying to de-clutter/symplify the household.  I bet they sound fantastic, though.

You can buy the remastered stuff individually on ITunes

No-one really does, if we're being honest. It's just intensely cool if you're a big enough fan, and collector. These things are never wise buys, but fuck it if they're not fun buys.

I'm just happy to finally get a remastered version of Meddle.

I may just have to suck it up and just get the iTunes recordings, but the fetishist in me sure wants them purdy packages.

Floyd are this really unique, special band to me. No one got me into them when I was young. Mum and Dad weren't fans and I had no older siblings. Most every other band I was pointed to, or discovered at the same time as friends. They were truly one of the only acts I gravitated to all by myself. For the longest time, Floyd were mine. Just mine.

Thing is, they're also one of the few bands that rather than having some deep seated nostalgic touchstone for me to draw my love for them from, they're still as vibrant and exciting to me at 35 as they were at 15 - in fact moreso. There's almost no other act outside of Tom Waits I can say that about personally.

It may seem trite and cliched, but Dark Side resonates with me more with each listen the older I get.

'Cause one day you'll find, ten years have got behind you - no one told you when to run.

You missed the starters gun.

I've been pimping this for ages but I don't care, I came across this podcast years ago which is pretty much a Pink Floyd lover's dream, live performances, rare songs, it has it all.

I just hope Floyd release some of this stuff officially.

I love Floyd but mostly Piper at the Gates of Dawn and the Syd Barrett era--not just his own stuff but also what he inspired Roger Waters to write.  Dave Gilmour is a one of a kind guitarist.  Their reunion at Live 8 (I think it was called) was incredible.  If you guys get it, please let me know what, if any, Syd Barrett stuff is on there.

There's no Syd Barrett stuff on the immersion sets as they're all post-barrett works. They remastered Piper at the Gates of Dawn as part of the campaign but it's a straight remaster, no bonus tracks or anything.

Are we talking a remastered, previously unreleased performance from the 70s?  Featuring Gilmour, Mason, Wright AND Waters?  Because if so, holy shit.

I remember scouring the internet trying to find live recordings from that era and coming up with nothing but shitty bootlegs.  Nothing against PULSE, but its just not the same without Waters.

Pretty much, yeah. It's a live performance from Wembley in 1974. The rest of the gig is on the Wish You Were Here Immersion set where they performed Shine on, Raving and Drooling and You gotta be crazy.

Thing is - and I adore most live Floyd - it's actually not the greatest performance in the world. It's not bad and interesting as a historical record, but I hate to say it but the live version of Dark Side on Pulse had more life than that '74 one.

That said, the totally remastered original of Dark Side is beyond brilliant.

Whoa, live pre-Animals Animals material too?!  Awesome.

I love PULSE, but its so slick and polished, almost to a fault.  Its tough to argue against the musicianship on display - Gilmour especially is as brilliant as he's ever been - but that glossy 80s arena rock sound from Momentary Lapse and Division Bell shines through on the older Floyd material and really makes it sound dated and kinda cheesy.

I dunno, I just always got a sense of how much fun the guys are having playing Dark Side again on PULSE. They're really going for it.

I kind of liked the pre-release version of Dark Side, the travel song just kicks ass.
