PARTY DOWN, PARTY DOWN FANS

Party Down gets some of that Arrested Development movie juju.

Try as I might, I can't picture how Party Down would work as a 90 minute movie.  Doesn't matter though, I'll take a movie, an opera, a sexually explicit marionette show, anything so long as Ken Marino, Lizzy Caplan and Martin Starr are back in the pink bowties.

I was similar to Renn Brown with Party Down, underwhelmed by the first few episodes but in love with it by the end of the first season and have since become a big fan of both Adam Scott and Ken Marino. The whole cast was really good, but I haven't seen much of the others since.

Nice Adam Scott WTF interview with Adam Scott here by the way - http://traffic.libsyn.com/wtfpod/WTF_-_EPISODE_227_ADAM_SCOTT.mp3

Fans of Marino and Scott should also check out their appearances on some of the Earwolf podcasts, specifically Comedy Bang Bang and the magnificent Who Charted?.

Considering I mostly watched the show in 90 to 180 minutes chunks, I think it will work just fine as a feature length.

I hope they pull Jennifer Coolidge back in. I actually laughed at her character more than Lynch or Mullalley, even if she did feel kind of detached from the regular crew.

These news please me. Really, really please me. Even more than the Arrested Development news. I hope they can get the Guttenberg to cameo, if he's not too busy.

Please be Nick Offerman, please be Nick Offerman, please be Nick Offerman...

You can't just slap 4 episodes together and release it theatrically, though.  There'll need to be a lot more straining to give everyone storylines weighty enough to merit the added length, or an abandonment of the "event and only the event" structure of the series, either of which could alter the show's shaggy charm.

I'll be there opening day regardless.  And if JK Simmons' producer character doesn't appear in some fashion, I will find John Enbom and kill him, like man.  With hands.

Should it or should it not follow up on Adam Scott's return to acting?

Or will it just start out with him having given up on it again?

I don't see why he can't be doing both.  Even though he's started auditioning again, and maybe even gotten a gig or two since the series ended, it doesn't necessarily mean he's able to give up his day job just yet.

Or they could go the opposite route, I suppose.   Have him be super successful again, and be the one that hires the gang for a party, only to get pulled back into the behind the scenes shenanigans.

The most obvious route to take would be PD catering the premiere/after-party for Henry's big comeback (in which I imagine he's cut down to a single line of dialogue).

I love the show with a passion. This is absolutely unnecessary.

Why would they need to abandon the structure? The episodes of the show were only 30 minutes long, but covered parties that were clearly much longer than that. Are we really to believe that only thirty minutes of shenanigans happens while catering a 4-5 hour party?

True, but I have no doubt that the team can put together a great movie.

I'm saying, a movie is a bigger event than an episode, so everyone needs to get a bigger storyline than usual.  And in trying to service the entire cast simultaneously (plus presumably the guest star host) in the same real-time format you run the risk of making it seem over-stuffed and contrived.  I have faith in Thomas and Enbom to navigate these waters, just saying that despite its laid back vibe, the show actually had a very strict structural formula that is designed for 20 minutes of episodic comedy, not a 90 minute feature.

It'll be funny for sure, but don't be surprised if a lot of fans end up complaining that it doesn't have the same feel as the show.

As an (early) fan of Party Down, this is what would make me 100% happy with a film. Adam Scott and Lizzy Caplan being snarky. Lizzy Caplan probably ending up in a hot-tub sometime during the movie would be a bonus (season 2 watchers you know what I'm talking about). Ken Marino and Martin Starr speaking.

I'm being honest. These things would make this an endeavor worth my time and money.

Maybe if the creators of this show are so talented, they should have just been given money to develop a movie? Why do we need it to be a "PARTY DOWN" movie? Or if you create something successful, I guess these days you're compelled to KEEP doing it because the second you don't they'll just hire Adam Shankman to helm a SHOOTS AND LADDERS project instead

It has to be Party Down because Thomas and Enbom have critical cache and good enough relations with a lot of mid-to-high level acting talent to get them to work cheap, but still haven't produced a runaway commercial hit that would convince a studio to give them carte blanche to do whatever.  Party Down is known quantity that has positive buzz, and the resurrection of Arrested Development has other people considering the viability of renewing other projects.  And PD is an attractive one; it's inside Hollywood, which flatters industry egos, it has low costs in that there is one set and one costume for everyone every week, no effects, and has a built in justification for regular cast turnover as careers take off and contract demands rise, as well as for a steady stream of guest stars, which everyone loves.

I think PD is a show that Hollywood really wants to make, but it was hampered by Starz not knowing how to do original programming and the fact that no one has been able to figure out what the new, DVR/streaming-centric ratings paradigm should be.  But its such a simple, malleable premise that it would be crazy for anything else to be first in line for renewal after AD.
