The typically particular DVD publisher has pissed off a few Gojira fans...

I don't think that looks all that different from the classic Godzilla.  It's a rear view anyway, and you can't even see his head.

Besides, unless you plan on displaying this on some kind of stand in your living room, chances are all you'll be seeing on a regular basis is the spine.

Wait, Criterion hired Bill Sienkiewicz to create a bluray cover for the original Godzilla?! This is truly the best of all possible timelines.

Comparing this to replacing Bela Lugosi with Gary Oldman is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay overstating it. This comes down to not liking how many/how large his back spikes are. Fanwanks gonna fanwank and all that.

Ok but uhh the movie is still intact right? Fucking people.

I'm a kaiju nut, but frankly I just think the image (especially the front cover) is kinda cool.

Yeah, my first thought was "If Bill Sienkiewicz wants to draw Godzilla as a goddam basket of daffodills, you say 'Yes sir! Thank you!' and STFU."

In all fairness, the original Godzilla had a pointier tail and fins than most of the later designs, up until 2000. I think it actually looks more like the 90's incarnations in overall build. Still, I would have preferred a more understated design overall.

Yep, can't see what the gripe is here.  Reminds me of all the people bitching about Superhero costumes.

Yeah, I agree that the "Oldman on Lugosi's cover" comparison is way out of line. This is more like a Star Wars: A New Hope poster featuring Chewbacca with his Return of the Jedi hair styling.

If I were a Godzilla fan I would be down on my knees thanking God that I get the original movie in a Criterion release.

Now, the pop-up on the inside is definitely the newer G, but I bet it's only a matter of time before some enterprising G-Fan comes up with a new head and folding instructions to replace it.

I saw this thread title and in my mind it was "Godzilla Cops".

Someone make that please.

I mean, the bitching is about the inside cover, which is significantly different from the more bulbous-headed design with craggier spikes and the tail. But then again, yes, I don't really give a shit because who gives a shit.

This is getting more attention because it's Criterion, obviously.

But at least it wasn't some change out of ignorance or laziness.  It sounds like it was a conscious artistic decision.

Only if the lead cop's best friend can be a "Kaiju Insurance Salesman" and Mike Judge gets to write it.

I wouldn't be at all shocked if Toho mandated that they use that design in some capacity in the packaging. Toho's notorious for being a pain in the ass about stateside DVD and Blu releases of the Godzilla series. They forced Media Blasters to change the cover of their release of Destroy All Monsters, basically at the last minute, and their release of Godzilla vs. Megalon, originally scheduled for release late last year, is currently in limbo due to Toho dragging their feet with the approval of its special features. Criterion might just be saying it was an intentional creative decision on their part in order to avoid any controversy.

Here's an interview with the producer of the Blu/DVD...

Sounds like they put a lot of work into this release, and the guy seems pretty excited by the package design.

Tell me about it!  Mine is still pre-ordered.
