The new year brings more changing tides...

Man, this is going to turn out to be one of those "everyone else fucks up something I like" things, isn't it? I still enjoy physical Blu-ray discs and the like....

Going to 56 days doesn't make me want to buy more movies.  It makes me pissed at WB that I have to wait so long.

As much as Netflix has screwed up, there really aren't any better alternatives.

Yeah, if I'm not going to buy a movie after 28 days, I'm certainly not going to buy it after 56.

And the number of movies I've purchased after renting them is a lot higher than the movies I purchased because I couldn't rent them.

The sad thing about this story was when I read it on HuffPo last week, a lot of the commenters used this as justification to pirate their movies.  Ugh.

The problem is, companies are so risk averse and simply do not plan long term strategies, because they demand maximum profit with no delay to please the shareholders.  This is not practical in huge times of transition like we're in right now, and if they don't adapt, they will get buried.  Business men are not visionaries, they have no insight, they only know how to move what's in front of them and they're panicking because they can't see a way out of this without sacrificing profits in the short term.  Bears hibernate in the winter for a reason.

It wouldn't surprise me if Redbox went the purchase route instead of delaying new releases.  I work at Best Buy and sometimes movies are advertised as "Not available on Netflix or Redbox!"  Requiring Redbox to wait to months to rent movies would cripple a lot of their business,  since they are a primary source for new release titles right now.  To be able to usurp that and start making the money the release date would still be profitable and it's what Redbox did in the beginning anyway.  A guy who comes into the store works for Redbox, red shirt with the logo and everything, and he told me that in the early days, they'd send him to Best Buy and Target and such to get movies the day of and put them in the box.

People need to sort this fucking shit out. Things are getting too complicated to actually antagonize pirating.

"OK, if you want to see film A in your home you should buy this cable package, but if you want to rent it you can only go to this chain, unless you wait another month and then you can buy it from another chain, or stream it if you buy Device B or Device C or rent online if you own Device C or D or buy it online if you own Device A or B, unless you live there instead of here in which case everything is in reverse, twice as expensive and another three months late."

Oh and make no mistake it will lead to more of that. I don't agree with it but when every fucking movie is up on a torrent site and your asking someone to wait even longer some people are just going to do it. Also this is really bad news for a smaller less popular films WB puts out. Sure Harry Potter or something like that is going to sell big but a smaller film or one that didn't hit big in theaters isn't going to sell at all. People need to rent those films first to see if they want to buy them. If you take a movie like Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, that NEEDS to be rented first by a clueless non movie buff who has nothing to lose so they can later buy it. This way new releases like that will get lost in the shuffle, sad really.
