PLUS three new pictures that aren't completely shitty.

At this point it has to be on purpose.

I dig the greying of the costume but, yeah, I'm getting kind of embarrassed for liking this Batman. The functional overdesign of the costume seems to only serve just how fucking silly the whole concept of a real world Bats is.

The thing that always annoyed me the most about that costume is why that black section across the upper chest has a tiny barely-visible bat insignia stamped on it rather than being in the shape of symbol itself.

Exactly. They're embarrassed by the Bat symbol but not everything else?

He looks like Robocop.

I gave this a little thought some time ago, and yeah, it seems obvious that Nolan doesn't like the insignia on Batman's chest. Superman's shield, the Bat symbol, etc, they were all placed on the costumes to make the characters easier to trademark, and over the past several decades where everything has to have an explanation behind it, latter-day creators have jumped through hoops to justify these features. Really, despite Frank Miller's one line of explanation in TDKR, the Bat symbol serves no functional or psychological purpose, but Nolan is still making billion dollar commercial product, so it stays and he gets around it as best he can.*

*That said, I like the symbol thing just fine, they work fine in the comics, and a design that's been around for generations is kind of difficult to discard.

Or the costume designer just decided to make it fucking small. Yeesh.

And this thing is overly detailed because it's designed to be seen in motion and in darkness. If it didn't have that level of detail, it would seem cheap and featureless. Same reason Spidey is covered in mesh and Superman's costume had a texture made up of thousands of little S's. I remain BAFFLED that studios let EW shoot their products this poorly and splash their shitty pictures all across the nation and the net.

I like this suit, but I also think that they should just ditch the bat symbol on it.  The cowl and cape are iconic enough that we know who he is.

It just looks like crap under studio lighting.  I saw TDK on TNT this weekend, and the suit looked far better than I remember.  The BB suit, on the other hand, was very problematic.  I still think the Keaton BR suit is the best, with Kilmer's suit a close second.

In searching for images of the suit in BF, I was struck by how hot Nicole Kidman was in that movie.  Holy crap.

Is it the same mag that shot Ruffalo as Dr. Banner as Zoolander?

'Cause yeah, for a magazine meant to draw people, the photos can seem awfully ridiculous.

Seems like magazine covers operate on a level similar to most studio-designed DVD covers.  No sense of mood.  Everything lit like a multi-cam sticom.

Abed looked better in his batsuit than Bale does in that picture.

The damn cover chops off the tips of his ears! That's my favorite part of the batsuit!

Well Abed is Batman now.

This is the first time they haven't updated the Batsuit in any way. They just dusted off the TDK suit and started shooting.

I like the TDK suit. As Renn pointed out, it was designed to be seen in film lighting and in motion, not under the glare of a still photographer's light.

Having said that, I am so fucking tired of people bitching about the suit. It looks good in the film (at least I think so), and I like the thought and approach behind it. A fabric costume would look sillier and be completely useless for practical crime fighting of any type.

And EW most certainly did not take this photograph. I'd bet all of TDKR's budget this was a studio-supplied photo that EW made look even worse.

ETA: I'm not trying to start a flame war with anyone over the suit. But it's been in place for the last four years. Can't we find something new to talk about?

There's no perfect suit people - the bat suit will always look silly. It's a fucking BATSUIT.

Ya know, it'd be nice if just one time a group of grown men could complain & debate about Batman & his costume without one of them throwing logic into the conversation. Just once.

Batman fuckin' SUCKS.

That's how he hits the high notes.

I know this is all in jest, but if anyone thinks that suit is better than Bale's in TDK, well, they're crazy--probably voting for Ron Paul.

I honestly have no opinion. It's the batsuit. Whatever. They all look to a greater or lesser degree, silly, so there's always some suspension of disbelief involved constantly. Its the same with Spidey and a heap of superheroes.

I do appreciate that it's still the same suit from TDK.  Too many times we get a pointless redesign just for the purpose of shilling merchandise. I mean if it ain't broke don't fix it and all that. However, that being said, even as a kid I could never for the life of me understand the practical use of wearing mascara with the cowl. Who the fuck has time to put on make-up with a bank robbery in progress?

Dazzler?

I've been saying for years there's a viable, real-world way for Nolan to move towards a fabric-based Batsuit: liquid kevlar. All of those who dislike the literal armor-based suit would be happier, in theory, and Nolan could've been happy in that he wasn't deviating from his desire to keep things a bit tethered to reality.

Art, I don't think it's about logic. As Rain Dog's pointed out, to some degree, any and all Batsuits are going to look silly (as will other comic costumes), especially if photographed brightly and out of context. I think any Batman film calls for a fairly large willing suspension of disbelief - this is a guy dressed as a bat fighting crime, fer pete's sake - so I'm not going to demand rigorous "logic" from the costume.

I regret my original post, as I should've just kept it to myself. I really am NOT trying to ignite bad feelings or anything with folks who dislike the TDK/TDKR suit.
