Movie Mistakes That You Love

Thread Starter

Sometimes, we evaluate movie mistakes on a purely technical level, expressing disappointment if they're part of a tighter package.  In other cases, however, movie mistakes are an abundant source of charm, like the obvious expression of an actor looking into a prompter or that crew member visible in the corner of a serious, dramatic scene.  Every movie has them - lay down your favorites.  OK, there's an obvious difference between two jarring cuts, the make-up is visible and that reflection of a camera really is odd - which examples should live in hilarious infamy?

Of course, mistakes are not restricted to technical goofs.  Feel free to also discuss clear errors on the actor's part if they're particularly memorable too.

Off the top of my head, one of my favorite movie errors happens in Zombie Holocaust (1980). In the film's inciting incident, a cannibal orderly belonging to a South Asian cult is caught munching on the remains of a corpse in the hospital where he works. Startled and facing arrest, he makes a break for it, and leaps right of a window at least six stories up. The cannibal (mannequin) hits the ground and the goddamn arm pops off like the piece of plastic it is. Cut to a scene of the bloodied, and only just dying cannibal, arm in tact. For some reason that just typifies Italian B-horror films to me. No second take, they didn't even give a shit to cut before he hit the ground and then cover it up w/ an insert reaction shot from witnesses. It totally prepares you for how absurd the rest of the film is and I love that.

Number 1 on my list has always been the scorpion that miraculously changes position under Mac's boot in Predator. Also, for years on the UK VHS version you could clearly see Carl Weathers' arm tucked behind his back after Dillon gets his arm blown off. It's cut off just above the hip in the correct aspect ratio so it seems like a pan & scan issue, but it was a fun one. I remember thinking for years that the arm was a genuine mistake, and was actually kind of disappointed when I finally saw it in the correct aspect ratio.

In Spielberg's 1941, the continuity in the scenes on the ferris wheel with Eddie Deezen and Murray Hamilton is just atrocious.  They're constantly swtiching sides, often from shot to shot.  And yet, considering the sheer unhinged over-the-top mess the film is anyway, I don't really care.

STAR WARS: the stormtrooper smacking his head on the door.  Thank Christ Lucas never 'fixed' that mistake.

Viggo Mortensen screaming in pain from breaking his toe after kicking an orc helmet.

OCEAN'S 11: Brad Pitt cracking up and breaking character after George Clooney makes the Ted Nugent comment.

I still can't believe that none of the filmmakers involved with "Teen Wolf" didn't notice an extra's clearly exposed penis at the end of the movie.

Didn't he sort of retcon it in the prequels with some dumb explanation though?  That's almost as bad.

It actually took me several viewings to even notice that, and it's really blatant once you see it.  I blame the dummy.

Yeah, but in doing so isn't he saying that it's an inherited trait all the clones share?

Oh nevermind, why am I even thinking about this?

I want to take a poetry writing class taught by George Lucas.  All I'd have to do to find a rhyme is use the exact same word.

Neo's disappearing sideburns during the "Burly Brawl". Cracks me up.

Hamill bouncing up into shot in Empire after he jumps down after Vader in the Carbonite chamber.  No idea if that was cleaned up or not.

The intact lamp when Aunt May knocks on Peters door after he's smashed it to fuck always gets me too.  Pretty much any Raimi goof is quality.

Sean Penn did a youth-in-prison movie called Bad Boys (way before the Martin Laurence cop buddy movie). There is a knife fight and the camera getting close ups is cleary visible when the cut to a medium shot. Well, clearly visible when you look for it. The fight is so well done that you aren't looking at that part of the screen, then when you see it , you can't not see it..

There's a scene in The Perfect Storm where Mark Walhberg's beard disappears during a conversation with Diane Lane. I think it's the one after he's woken up with the black eye. It's an obvious re-shoot, with absolutely no care for continuity.

Return of the Jedi - the reversed shots when Boba Fett draws his blaster on Boushh/Leia.  Okay, not really one that I love.

My favorite is the Dodge Charger losing more hubcaps than it has wheels over the course of the chase scene in Bullitt.
