Detachment Pre-Release

Tony Kaye returns after about thirteen years since his last narrative film. Anybody who's seen Lake of Fire knows he's still got the goods, so this should be an interesting one. It also boasts one of those casts that just gets progressively better as the names pop up in the trailer, leading to bemused laughter at the absurd overabundance of top-quality performers on display. The trailer looks good, if a little hackneyed (but what trailer isn't?). It's out in two months. Unfortunately, the reviews, mostly out of Tribeca, have not been kind so far.

This movie is pretty bonkers. It's completely, crazily melodramatic, but the emotions are played up to eleven. I had a great time with it - it's filled with all sorts of bizarre stylistic choices and strange digressions. And it doesn't feel like a cohesive story more than a snapshot of a few decaying teachers and students.

I thought Brody was great, and Kaye's daughter Betty was pretty heartbreaking as the chubby emo student who falls for him. But you kind of have to accept that it's the kind of movie where an emo student falls for smooth-talking teach Adrien Brody, but she Just. Can't. Have. Him.

James Caan gets a few laughs as a good-humored pervy teacher who doesn't care about the school one way or another. And Bryan Cranston has only one scene and it's COMPLETELY bizarre - non-stop dutch angles as his wife (the principal, Marcia Gay Harden) comes home, he tries to fuck her, she refuses, and he proceeds to destroy the fine china. Slowly, like a robot, while giving a speech about a man's needs.

Strange picture.

That sucks. So I guess it's safe to guess Kaye should stick to the docs these days?

Well, I loved it, and I think it's kinda great. It's just... y'know... a little crazy.
