The Expendables 2. PG-13. RAGE!

Like you mentioned, I won't be shocked in the slightest if it is released with an R-rating.  The first was no profanity-fest anyway and this whole hubbub smacks of Sly & Co. gauging fan reactions to the IDEA of a PG-13 sequel before they finish filming so that they know what they want to do when they finally all head into the editing room.  I'm not particularly worried.

If this gets an R rating in a well publicized turnaround due to fan outrage, I am going to go ahead and say this tempest in a teapot was all arranged ahead of time.

The problem is, if they have material in this that can be either R or PG-13, then it's probably not that cool. The best R-rated movies are un-editable. The first one was an R because everything felt added with with shitty ADR and sloppy computer effects. The WORST kind of R-rating.

It's also a sign that everyone is just thinking commercially with this. Just make the movie. Make it badass. Quit bullshitting about ratings. If you toss around four f-words and they say you need three for a PG-13, and you really need that rating, just tell them it's about the Holocaust, or Spielberg directed it or something.

Shoot the movie. Make it awesome. Don't MAKE it R. Let it BE R.

Agreed.

Many of the set reports coming through (assuming they are true) have pointed towards West & Sly reimagining scenes on set to make them more violent and spectacular.  I don't think they are holding back on the violence.  As for CGI blood?  Well, that sadly comes with the territory when it comes to Lionsgate these days.  Who knows.  I'll honestly be kinda surprised if it hits theaters with a PG-13 rating.  Same shit, different movie.

Im fuzzy on the whole US rating system, does anyone know what PG13 would equate to in the UK?

We have

18

15

12a

PG

U

12A, pretty much. It's the ratings they all shoot for these days.

As for EXPENDABLES 2, whichever rating it lands on it's gonna stink.

I think PG13 is the equivalent of our 12a. And R is 17 or over, OR someone under 17 accompanied by a guardian aged at least 17.

But I think loads of young teens sneak into R rated movies anyway...

Well we got 50 Cent replaced with Terry Crews. Maybe we can get an R.

Well said.

Wouldn't it be better to do the film properly and just have Norris' character be against swearing. In fact, a scene where Terry Crewes tries to gaud Chuck Norris by calling him every name under the sun is something I would want to see.

I don't think removing or adding profanity affects the quality of a film but it certainly alters the tone. I was amazed at how much more 'Die Hard' the Ultimate(?) Cut of Live Free or Die Hard was. Suddenly Willis felt like John McClane again.

No matter how much he says or thinks it, I severely doubt Chuck's opinions have any bearing on the matter when it comes to the rating.  He's just talking out of his ass, as he tends to do these days.

Hey, we managed it last time when this same problem came up!

And it was still terrible!

Was anyone honestly expecting an honest-to-God legitimate masterpiece out of the original (or the sequel)?  All I wanted was a fun action movie starring a bunch of my old favorites and that's pretty much what I got.

No-one was expecting a masterpiece. Some of us were expecting - well, "hoping for" might be the better term - a good film. The first one doesn't even stack up against PREDATOR 2. There is literally nothing about it that stands out.

 Terry Crewes?

I didn't think it was much cop but I did enjoy Statham and Stallone barely escaping in a plane then turning around and blowing the dock to shit. I'm quite easily impressed though...

Even as a massive Stallone fan, I still don't have the highest hopes for this flick.  The first blew ass, and all signs are pointing to shitfest again.

It has been mentioned that if any of this is true, Norris will lose a lot of cred.  I declare bullshit on that.  Definitely with the geekiest of movie fans, but once again several people give the "general population" a lot more credit than they deserve.  Norris jokes are annoying as shit because Old Navy and Target started selling t-shirts and underwear with his ugly ass face all over them.  A vast majority of the people that are now in on the Norris jokes are never going to hear about this.  If they do, they aren't going to care at all.

It blows me away that this man thinks violence is cool, but swearing is not.  I bet, if he actually does have any sway in the production, any sexuality has been toned down too.  Violence?  God approved.  Sex and profanity?  Devil's work.

Now can The Expendables even have the quality gap for such a fall? This movie might of done GI JOE in reverse!

It still could have been better for what it wanted to be, though. Ten years from now, we will still quote and remember flicks like Cobra, John Rambo, Predator 2, Showdown in Little Toyko. I can't see that happening with the first Expendables. You? Maybe Bullet to the Head manages to do that. Sly with a fireax against Momoa feels a bit like Cobra.

I hope Avengers does leave a bigger impression and at least turns out to be as good as the solo flicks before that.

At least it'll be really hard for Expendables 2 to be worse than Chuck's last movies. But maybe we're lucky and it's the long lost Delta Force 3.

S.D. Bob Plissken, Expecting a...Masterpiece?  The Expendables, was the...Best Film Of 2010!  It...Was, and still...IS, a...Masterwork of Sylvester Stallone!  Stallone and Statham alone make it so.  The final battle? Awe-Inspiring in it's...Awesomeness!  Even turning the sequel into a...PG 13 film is not the disaster, that it would be for...Lethal Weapon or the last Die Hard.  I do not love the decision to make EX 2 Pg 13, but other men on a mission films have been so rated...G.I. Joe Rise Of Cobra comes to mind!  That was the...Best Film of 2009!  If Ex 2...Explodes into piles of Greenbacks, then I will gladly see...Expendables III: 3D!, even if it were PG 13!

Yet again, I refuse to get worked up for the simple reason that this is EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED THE LAST TIME AND WE STILL GOT AN R-RATED FILM.

And this one has a better cast, better story, and probably better filmed action sequences.  It will likely be on par with or better than the original, regardless of its final theatrical rating.

Simon West is one tenth the director that Stallone is. And Stallone isn't even that good!

Better cast?

'Tis why I said shot, not directed.  Even Sly admits to not being happy with the majority of the second-unit work on the first film, particularly the Lundgren vs. Li fight.

As for the cast?  I'll take Van Damme, Scott Adkins, Norris, expanded roles for Arnold and Bruno, and more Lundgren screentime over a paycheck-collecting "Batista" and random soldier extras any day of the week.  No one involved is a major "thespian", but things should at least be more fun this time.

I think it's just "more" cast rather than "better", myself.
