We finally won - Lucas quits

What are the chances that he will hold to this and actually stop screwing with the films?

Surprised he even gives a shit what people think to be honest.

You finally won?  A Pyrrhic victory at best, fanboys.  Move along.

He's not really quitting, he's been saying he wants to do smaller, personal and experimental films for quite a while.

I'm glad to hear he's fed up with the irrational fanboys, I am too. He can do whatever pleases with his movies, if he can't do that, then what's the point of creating anything?

I really hope Red Tails is a good film and if so successful, I like what I hear of the movie from that interview.

I don't recall Lucas ever seriously suggesting he would make more Star Wars films. And he's still blaming people for saying his shitty work has been shitty.

So what's new?

He may no longer have any desire for filmmaking but don't be surprised when he's still tinkering with the Star Wars films, as there are five more to go on 3D (assuming TPM does well enough).

This just makes me incredibly sad.  I was watching one of the docs on the Godfather DVDs about the early days of American Zoetrope and George Lucas featured prominently.

What the hell happened to that guy?  I still think he's a great storyteller and has a wonderful eye for visuals.  But, like Coppola to a certain extent, he seems to be able to produce good films only when beset by adversity throughout.  Now that he's surrounded by yes-men, his output has been relatively subpar.  What's the last movie he made with the studio breathing down his neck and surrounded by talented people who would challenge him and not simply bow to his word, The Empire Strikes Back?

Even during his interview on The Daily Show, he seemed a bit of a broken man.  Lord knows I wouldn't be happy if all I heard when I visited any random website was how much George Lucas raped my childhood.

Fanboys: what have you wrought?

Super depressing. His entire career has basically been the plot of Citizen Kane. He ended up the head of everything he rebelled against and now he's trapped in his own Kubla Khan. His personal life is endlessly more fascinating than any film he's ever produced, written or directed.

Right, because all his untold billions are locked up in a trust that he can't touch without the approval of internet fanboys.

He can do whatever he wants, except rake it in at the box office and receive universal praise for even his dud movies.  Poor, poor George.

The point of creating anything is so people can see it.  If the Mona Lisa was endlessly dicked with and the original was only made available in water colors on cardboard*, I'd say there would be a right to bitch.

(*original films only available in non anamorphic dvd with mono sound, versus special editions being on blu-ray and as close to original film quality as possible)

If only Mark Walhberg had been on the set of the prequels. Then they'd have been good.

A Star Wars thread elsewhere is all like:

A Star Wars thread on CHUD usually turns out like this:

WHERE'S MAH ORIGINAL VERSIONS ON BLU-RAY! LUCAS DOESN'T KNOW SHIT BUT WE TOTALLY DO! GRRRRR! GRRRRRRR!

Because clearly, when Lucas talks about what people say about him on the internet, he's talking specifically and only about this one site.

We don't yet realize our importance.  We have only begun to discover our power!

Speaking of CHUD and all the Star Wars hate here, whatever happened to Carl Cunningham?

So this time we might actually (Maybe) get those small experimental films he's been talking about making since the Cretaceous period? Cool by me.

It's Star Wars. All comparisons to the Mona Lisa are fucking retarded.

I'm not comparing Star Wars to the fuckin' Mona Lisa in quality, I'm talking about a beloved piece of art the world over with many, many fans.

Love the 'Citizen Kane' reference posted above. The last few months I've seriously been considering writing a script about specifically that, anyone interested in co writing? For Christ sakes, he even built his own XANADU!

Fuck. I actually cannot retort to that. There is no reasonable reponse. You're absolutely right. You fucker.

So by "small experimental art films" Lucas means "Hey guys, here's that new live-action SW TV show! LOVE ME! LOVE ME WITH YOUR MONEY!"

Seriously though, the man loves working/editing in film so I doubt he'll fully retire.

He loves it so much that he's been refilming and editing the same Goddamn six films for over thirty years.

You 'won'? What, by being insufferable whiney fucks for the last decade? Congrats!

I dont buy the "lucas is a shit director/writer" argument on the basis of "THX 1138" and "American Graffitti" alone.

What Lucas needs is to do the same thing Spielberg just did; work on a material he loves or on something that provides him with a challenge.

Just look at "Kingdom of the crystal School"; its mediocre at best and its pretty much Spielberg on auto-pilot; yet when he works on something original (War Horse) or a material he openly loves (Tintin) he brings his A game out.

The thing is, Lucas has had the ability to do whatever he wants for two decades now. He could have made his WAR HORSE years and years ago, but he doesn't. He's creatively bankrupt.

None of this excuses the whiny mewling of entitled STAR WARS nerds, by the way. In this war there are no good guys.

Pretty sure the title is in jest.  I certainly hope so, anyway.
