Let's just start this with a simple poll, and go from there. The girlfriend and I are moving to a new place, and are in the midst of negotiations on how to arrange my now segregated DVDs/HD DVDs/Blu Rays.

I keep mine segregated because I KNOW that I'll be upgrading every single dvd in the coming years. Mixing your old dvds with your Criterion blus? Nuh -uh. That's like mixing leather bound books with your old issues of Highlights magazine.

Sounds like someone will soon be joining us in the "When Your Relationship Ends" thread.

I keed, I keed.

The boxes are different sized therefore they go on different shelves with their own kind.

I practice apartheid with my media as well. They are not separate but equal.

DVDs co-mingled with Blus? My DVDs should consider themselves lucky I even still display them at all, let alone prominently.

With their antiquated asses.

But what if they weren't Bond movies???  You can't PICK AND CHOOSE when to get all progressive!!!

Phil has a dream.

Bond should ALWAYS be in chronological order, even if the selection comprises of blu, DVD, VHS, Betamax, & dog-eared paperbacks.

Just noticed that Phil does NOT care for Brosnan.

Ok, so, the rabbit hole goes deeper: The place we're moving has a BEAUTIFUL floor-to-ceiling bookshelf I intend to load up with movies and games. The problem: The shelves are 7ish feet high. She's 4'11. Is there a solution (besides a stepladder) where she'll be able to reach and read the library? My thought was putting my older gen games up top, and descending in relevance (360/PS3 ending in the middle somewhere), then starting Blu Rays/DVDs/etc whenever games stop.

Step ladder, son.

Porn? On physical media? You speak of lies and nonsense.

...although we really should watch more togeBUT THATS NOT THE FUCKING POINT.

Yeah, i think a stepladder's in the future.

Mix them. Mine are mixed, and alphabetized. If you're segregating them based on format via the case size, what do you do with blus that are in steelbook cases? Might as well just let them mingle.  90% of blu-rays are misegenated anyway, what with their DVDs and digital copies packed in with them.

A step ladder made of step children...

...oh hi there!

Really place a caste system on those bitches. We all have those untouchabales... ...you know the DVDs we got by "friends" in full screen and Indiana Jones 4 in any format.

I admit I wasn't into placing figurines with my movies, but I eventually fell into geekdom. Some movies I'm really into, like watching everything on it, I pull out and place to the side on a mini book prop up. Puts a disc on display as well.

I keep my Blu-rays and DVD separate, with the two exceptions that 1) I have all of my Criterion discs together regardless of format and 2) I have all the seasons of LOST on Blu-ray except season 2.

Something that confuses me is whether to alphabetize the Criterions or place them in collection order by number.  I do alphabetized now because I have so few.

II generally alphabetize all of the movies I own, but I also have a small section where I put films of a much higher caliber (in terms of film-making or artistry) than the rest.  If I put them all together, Taxi Driver would be next to Super Mario Brothers.  I love both films, but they really aren't allowed to associate with one another.

I don't have nearly the number of blu-rays that I have DVDs, so I keep them separate.  But I rarely buy a straight DVD anymore.

Sepeate but near each other. Luckily the DVD pile is starting to get smaller than the blu-ray pile.

I used to keep everything mixed together in alphabetical order until I moved to a smaller place. Sadly I had to give up my old Ikea bookshelves because there was no room for them and I was presented with a my own storage conundrum, How do I make my collection easily accessible and store it all on a 3ft x 3ft bookcase? I hate those dvd binders, but it seemed like they were my only option until I came across this thing:

267

More expensive than binders, but it is easier to browse and they look a lot more presentable on the bookcase. Then I started my segregation. My DVDs occupy four of them, then I have a separate one for anthology sets and Tv Shows, one for games, and one for Blu-Rays. All the cases for the disks are boxed and sitting neatly in a storage unit. It's not perfect (when I get new disks it's hell to reorganize), but it's working so far.

I've reread this post multiple times trying to see if there is a way to make it seem less like I'm a shill, but fuck it, It's beyond me.
