Sphere (1998)

An unintentional comedy?

From Dustin Hoffman screaming like a little girl whenever he's in trouble, to Sam Jackson's hilariously blase performance, to Queen Latifa as a submersible officer, this has fubar written all over it.

It's an intruiging premise, but it feels like the filmmakers didn't even understand the material they were working with.  The actors seem even more clueless, stumbling through an inane script and acting their hearts out to the point of comedy.

Seriously, there are so many bizarre holes in this movie.  For instance, Sharon Stone's character is examing the jelly fish that killed Latifa, and says they are not real jelly fish, not God's creations, but the scene just ends with no explanation as to WHY they are not real jelly fish.  Robots?  Synthetics?  What?

And when Sam Jackson's character wakes up from being in a weird coma after going inside the sphere, his character does a complete 180 and becomes nearly autistic in the way he doesn't seem to be participating in reality, and has a strange sinister vibe to him...yet when Stone and Hoffman's characters go into the sphere, not only do they not go into a coma, their characters stay virtually the same.

This same sinister vibe in Sam Jackson seems to just dissappear for not apparent reason and he becomes seemingly normal again.

Just a weird, weird movie all around.

I remember being baffled by this one as well. How does it compare to Crichton's book (which I've never read)?

This is the movie that cuts Peter Coyote in half with a door, correct?

From what I remember, it's bat-shit crazy. And not really in a good way.

I saw this.  I actually paid money to sit in a theater and watch it.  And I could not tell you a goddamn thing about it if my life depended on it.

I must have seen this film a million times on cable when I was a kid. Other than the creepy score and the hilarious part where Liev Schrieber gets his face roasted I too remember almost nothing about it.

Edit: Oh wait. I do remember the giant squid scene giving me a lot of nightmares. I remember everyone being disappointed we didn't get to see it but that only made it more effective to my overactive imagination.

When I was in college, I took a coed who was a runner-up to be Ms. Spokane to see this movie. On Valentine's Day. We never went out again. Fuck this movie.

I remember Sharon Stone dating Dustin Hoffman before the story starts, then he leaves her and she's so distraught she tries to commit suicide.

YEAH OKAY RITE.

Well, the very last thing that happens in the movie is they all agree to forget.  I guess the audience decided to follow suit.

This movie is just too strange and hilarious to be called bad.

She found out that he can wear a dress better than she can.
