AMPAS has tarted up its website and is starting the ad blitzkrieg for Feb 26th.

I eagerly await the Hobo With A Shotgun one that says, 'We Showed You How To Skate-Rape'.

Admittedly, I haven't seen most of the films that are going to get nods tomorrow, but it feels like this is the first year in a long while that I don't have a dog to root for.  I know Deathly Hallows Part 2 doesn't have a chance in hell of winning the big one, and the only performance that's stuck in my head is from a film that I didn't particularly enjoy (Rooney Mara in Rape and Computers).  Meh.

I just hope the musical number from Captain America gets a nod.

I'm holding out for the very slim chances that Charlize Theron and/or Elizabeth Olsen sneak into Best Actress and for ANY recognition for TREE OF LIFE.

There's only one true Best Song winner this year, and that's "Muppet or Man".

In a just and kind world, Charlize would be scoring accolades left and right for YOUNG ADULT. I haven't seen Martha Marcy May Marlene yet, but right now, Theron is the one to beat in my eyes.

If anything, the Cinematography category this year should be interesting. War Horse, Tree of Life, Hugo, The Artist, and something random are my guesses.

I'm holding out hope Chastain is nominated for Tree (or even Take Shelter, though I have yet to see it) and not The Help.

...I think Chastain was better in The Help. I bet she gets nominated for neither.

Feels like a really "who the fuck cares" year, doesn't it?

They're pretty smug capitalizing on Bride Of Frankenstein, considering that the only Academy attention it got back then was a nomination for Best Sound.

"We taught you how to tie up and anally rape your wards."

And I have to say; despite all the scorn The Help gets, Chastain was damn great in it. A nomination for that wouldn't bother me at all.

Airing now...

EDIT: SO BORING.

DOUBLE EDIT: I'm gonna be predictable and pull for War Horse. And kudos to that lady from Bridesmaids getting a nod. And Dean Pelton.

And I'm just happy I can now say "Academy Award Nominee Bret McKenzie" while I'm watch Flight of the Conchords.

In all honesty, I haven't watched the Oscars in a few years at least, and I may this year solely to see them perform that song live.

Malick is my only horse in the race this year. Although, Jonah Hill?!

Here's to hoping for a sweep by Woody.

You misspelt "Terrence".

'Kay. So.

--Goddammit, I expected a boring Best Picture race, and I'm in Malick's and/or Spielberg's corner across the board, but JESUS. Also, the people who whooped when Extremely Loud And Fucking Annoying was nominated should be eliminated with extremely loud prejudice.

--Actors: Go Oldman. Go Nolte. Go McCarthy. And I'm actually kinda hoping Rooney Mara takes Actress. That film has faults. She wasn't one. If Michael Fassbender, Carey Mulligan, Ryan Gosling, Kirsten Dunst, Tilda Swinton and Elizabeth Olsen get arrested attempting to burn down a building, or snipe someone from a belltower tonight, not a jury in the world will convict them.

--One word: SERKIS.

--I have ZERO clue what the first two Animated Feature nominations were, but none of them being TinTin is disgraceful.

That....that's kinda it. I got nothing.

Nope. Woody. See? It's correct.

THIS.

I don't get the nomination for McCarthy.  You mine as well nominate fucking Zach for The Hangover. Muppet or a man is clearly the best song ever nominated for an award, although not having the Cap number play at this show is a missed opportunity.  Warrior, Drive, and 50/50 among others deserve presence on this list.  At least Nolte got a nod. Oh and please get Extreamely Loud and War Horse out of that best picture.

Preferably beaten to death by whooping cranes wielding farm tools.

Overseen by a rabid Colobus monkey. Yep. That'll do.

You had me, then you lost me.

So Puss In Boots is a better animated film than Tintin?  I mean, I was sort of luke warm on Tintin, but come on.

Even though I don't think it has a chance, I'm quite pleased War Horse got a nomination for Best Picture.  It's a sort of vindication for Spielberg after a lot of people were ready to write him off after Crystal Skull.  And the cinematography nomination was totally earned as well.

I don't have a problem with the McCarthy nomination.  It's one of those times when the buzz was just too big to ignore.  Besides, don't we always complain about comic performances never getting their due?  I'm just glad the film didn't get a Best Picture nod, like some were predicting.  That would have just been crazy talk.

Grumble grumble Andy Serkis grumble grumble.

And ladies and gentlemen, allow me to present to you the Oscar-nominated Real Steel!  It has no prayer of taking the FX award, but I was unexpectedly pleased to see it get nominated.

Is TINTIN actually classed as animated, though? I think mocap stuff is still in some weird grey netherworld for the Academy.

Are there surprises here to get outraged about? Seems like an entirely predictable batch of nominations to me.

MARTHA MARCY MAY MARLENE getting thoroughly snubbed seems like the biggest and most egregious.

So who is supposed to win best actress?  Seems like a bunch of great actresses who should be winning awards for better movies.

And did Extremely Loud get two total nominations: best supporting actor and best picture?  Man, von Sydow must be really good.  (Or, y'know, Scott Rudin is Harvey Weinstein II.)

Glad for Malick.   I guess the best I can hope for (and it's a long shot), is a split Picture/Director where unstoppable The Artist gets BP and Malick slips in as Director.

Charlize Theron is the biggest omission for me.   She owned that movie 20 different ways to Sunday and yet she's beaten out by an actress who appears to be playing Orson Bean.

TWO Best Song Nominees?   Why the fuck bother?

Also:  Transformers 3:  Dark Side of the Moon now has the same number of nominations as Tree of Life.   Eek.

Well it's, it's just a picture, and the reason reason reason is it's so small.

(sorry.)

I can't say its really surprising, but it makes me sad that Drive was barely acknowledged.  At least get Albert Brooks up there.

The best picture nominees are predictable, but I can't say I'm mad about any of them. Loved me some Extremely Loud, so glad that's there. I'm just glad that we can finally, FINALLY say 'Academy Award nominee Gary Oldman'. What the fuck took so long? Nolte but no Brooks? Interesting...

So YOU'RE the one.

I've actually heard a lot of good stuff about Chico & Rita. For years, the Academy has nodded to but ignored these small films in favor of the Pixar movie.

But yeah, these are probably the most boring noms I've seen since I started paying attention to the show (I started in 2003). Whatevs. It doesn't matter

Speaking of boring, can it be called a shock at the lack of Eastwood? I would have thought J. EDGAR would have picked a few costume or make up noms if just to get Clint to come to the show.

Nah, he's been slowly dying as an Academy darling since LETTERS & FLAGS.

Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close for Best Picture? I doubt it's a serious contender, but then I wouldn't have expected Crash to get the nod back in the day over 4 superior candidates either. At least that thing got decent reviews, I'm struggling to think of a more poorly received film that's made the line-up (I'm sure there is one, I just can't think of it). It's unfortunate, but pretty much the only movie I care about this year is Rango for animated. I'd like to check out the two foreign entries as they both seem interesting, but dammit Rango deserves some love!

Hopefully this is the death knell for the CARS franchise.

With five and a half million dollar gross worldwide and billions in merchandising? Nurp.

Yes, them not winning their seventh Best Animated Feature Oscar is going to stop them from wanting to make another $600million.

I watched the trailers for A Cat in Paris and Chico & Rita.  Cat looked interesting, and I liked the visual style.  Chico & Rita seems mostly rotoscoped, which sort of left me cold.

Is it just me, or do the nominations seem stacked with a lot of familiar names and lot of well-known, crowd-pleasing films?  I don't think it was intentional, but your average viewer is more likely to tune in to see Billy Crystal possibly awarding George Clooney, Brad Pitt, and Meryl Streep.

Wasn't it this year that Disney announced they had sold five fucking billion dollars worth of Cars merchandise? FIVE BILLIONS. The Cars franchise will never stop and artistic merit aside they're right. Five thousand million times right.

8 billion.

If only the auto industry had known that making the front of a car look like a face could yield 8 billion in additional revenue, we might never have had to bail their asses out.

Really hope Streep doesn't win. Fuck Thatcher

Man, the Academy really hates Mo-Cap doesn't it. YAY for Bechir.

Jonah Hill but no Serkis? Tha fu...?

Tinker, Tailor... & Alfredson should've gotten a nod. A brilliant film. Oldman deserves it just on principle but his performance was 70% Alec Guinness impersonation.

What a boring year.

...  Tinker Tailor was boring.  Yeah, I said it.

You're just full of questionable taste today.
