The Asshole & The Ecstasy: 2012 ACADEMY AWARDS - Page 5

I do not understand the Attack the Block love. I saw it early and free and still found it to be a boring fucking slog.

Don't hurt me.

Man, if you look at the nominees and think "they need more sex and violence and cursing!" then I think your head is seriously in the wrong place.

You're misinterpreting what I said. I didn't say there should be more sex and violence and cursing in Oscar nominees/winners as a rule. I meant those things shouldn't be held against movies when being considered for Oscar recognition.

Movies that are excellent should have a shot whether they're characterized by those qualities or not. And I think the exclusion of "Drive" from consideration in major categories is proof that those things are still disadvantageous to a movie's Oscar chances in this day and age.

There always seems to be about one movie a year that was never even close to Oscar consideration for just about no good reason. It might be The Wrestler, or  this year, Drive. Just out of the loop for no good reason.

And the oscars go to violent genre stuff frequently enough. Movies like Black Swan get some wins, or Silence of the Lambs, taking every major award. I think it's more that the academy is easily swayed by junky prestige pictures than that they're pretentious. When I look at nominations for Extremely Loud or whatever, it makes them seem more dumb than snobby to me. Which might just be me being snobby.
