JOHN CUSACK *IS* EDGAR ALLAN POE!

Just in case the poster didn't make its point clear to you in the first place.

I was up for this until the trailer dropped. The trailer looks such shit — it's Action!Poe, when what was needed was something like the better scenes in Sleepy Hollow.

Come to think of it, how is this not a Burton/Depp movie? Don't they pre-emptively own every property that could conceivably be Burton/Depp?

That's not too far off from how I reacted to the trailer.  Boy, does Cusack look miscast in this.  That and the movie looks completely dull.

I hope that's destined to become a meme.

Now I'm just thinking of a Bart Simpson raven tormenting Cusack Poe.  It's SO easy to imagine Cusack going "D'OH!!!!!"

"Dark teen" me would probably flip his shit at this. And end up with parts of his computer broken. And I don't know if the fact that older me is all "C'est la vie" is a sing of maturity or defeat.

Wasn't John Cusack in Con Air, and didn't Nic Cage play Cameron Poe?

Holy shit, I just got a great idea for a movie.

This movie would have had my attention if it didn't look so desperate to replicate the Guy Ritchie template for Holmes...and if it had cast Jeffrey Combs as Poe in the first place.

Granted, both of those creative choices would have substantially reduced the base box office prospects of the film.

Wasn't Jeremy Renner the original choice for this (and possibly even attached at one point)?  Of course, his Hansel & Gretel film (which just got pushed back almost an entire year) isn't looking too hot either.

I just cannot buy John Cusack in a period piece. There's just something about him that just seems too 'modern' to me, goatee or no.

Now Luke Evans...this kind of shit is his bread and butter. The Three Musketeers, Immortals, this movie. It's like some kind of rule that if you're making a highly stylized over-the-top totally unfaithful historical movie, Luke Evans has to be there.

It undermines the idea that every Cusack movie is in some way a sequel to Say Anything.

For the new Poe movie, they are really missing an opportunity to have him romance his young cousin by holding up a phonograph outside her window.

"The only one who can stop a serial killer is the one who inspired him..."

That sort of meta sounds more S King than Poe.

I am reminded a bit of SLEEPY HOLLOW while watching the trailer. Sans humor. So more like FROM HELL. As a fan of Cusack and Gothic Horror, I'll see it. On dvd.

Trailer didn't really sway much one way or the other, though I did find the lack of Poe actually doing anything particular "action-y" (I think he fires a gun?) reassuring. I like the idea of the sheltered artist suddenly caught up in reality, though I doubt the movie's going to swing that deep. Luke Evans on the other hand seemed to be slipping into a coma, or doing his best "Batman-lite" impersonation. Hopefully the actual performance has a bit more vim.

I'm pretty sure Evans is in The Hobbit as well.  biggrin.gif

Would love for someone in Hollywood to just put together a Poe bio-pic as accurate to the man's life as possible.

This. And we do need a HP Lovecraft movie. And the Manson Lewis Carroll movie.

The Stallone Poe movie not so much.

Anyone ever thought about a Stephen King movie?
