People Who Annoy You - Page 2

I'm not for the wholesale deleting of stuff. People should know that as far as I'm concerned, what people post stays to their name. That said, I urge everyone to let this thread die.

I would like to request the thread title changed.

Due to requests, title = fixed.

Shoulda been changed to

People Who Annoy You(Formerly "Niggers")

Before I was assured of a thread full of guilty white people falling all over themselves to show how offended they are by words.  Now I doubt this thread will hold much more comedy.

Because it's not comedy and it's not just a word.

Like it or not it has history and connotation. Fuck is just a word. Cunt is just a word. They have no connotation other than what they are, rude words. The same cannot be said about this word.

In this day and age I wouldn't use a derogatory word against any racial or sexual orientation group (except gingers) because there is no fucking need. At all.

It sets up barriers between us, it creates differences that are skin deep at best. If we want to develop as a species we need to leave all this shit behind us, and that includes unnecessarily using words like this.

Did you really just go from being one of the board's biggest misogynists to dismissing racial slurs as "just words"? That's some mega white privilege shit, dude.

Misogyny?  In what fucking universe?

And yes, I did.  Of course it is a loaded word.  Loaded by the motherfucker saying it, not by the word itself.  Did Gabe fuck up?  Yeah, but the histrionics of the people in here trying to be the most guilty about it are gold.  Andy gets high marks for keeping on about gingers despite feeling bad about every other derogatory remark about peoples genetic make-ups.

I would love for you to elaborate on that.

George Carlin said it really well:

Quote:
There's a different group to get pissed off at you in this country for everything your not supposed to say. Can't say Nigger, Boogie, Jig, Jigaboo, Skinhead, Moolimoolinyon, Schvatzit, Junglebunny. Greaser, Greaseball, Dago, Guinea, Whop, Ginzo, Kike, Zebe, Heed, Yid, Mocky, Himie, Mick, Donkey, Turkey, Limey, Frog. Zip, Zipperhead, Squarehead, Crout, Hiney, Jerry, Hun, Slope, Slopehead, Chink, Gook. There is absolutely nothing wrong with any of those words in and of themselves. Their only words. It's the context that counts. It's the user. It's the intention behind the words that makes them good or bad. The words are completely neutral. The words are innocent. I get tired of people talking about bad words and bad language. Bullshit! It's the context that makes them good or bad. The context. That makes them good or bad. For instance, you take the word "Nigger." There is absolutely nothing wrong with the word "Nigger" in and of itself. It's the racist asshole who's using it that you ought to be concerned about. We don't mind when Richard Pryer or Eddie Murphy say it. Why? Because we know they're not racist. Their Niggers! Context. Context. We don't mind their context because we know they're black. Hey, I know I'm whitey, the blue-eyed devil, paddy-o, fay gray boy, honkey, mother-fucker myself. Don't bother my ass. Their only words. You can't be afraid of words that speak the truth, even if it's an unpleasant truth, like the fact that there's a bigot and a racist in every living room on every street corner in this country.

What I was saying was that a few of you came rushing in here to declare how much you hated the word with such ferocity when you weren't the ones using it.  Gabe did.  Did he make a mistake?  Sure, change the thread title then, don't spend two days wringing your hands over what it all means for the state of the CHUD boards and generally trying to show you are the least bigoted/racist among us.

If y'all were going on and on about homophobia and fags and gayness Shakespeare would be appropriate and would get you a nice laugh track from Hollywood.

Words.  Can words be given power?  Yeah, but they can also be stripped of their power and repurposed and you ought to be more concerned with the person using the word than the word itself.

yes, well that was to point out my own failings, as in a previous post I pointed out that I do do this, which effectively makes me no better.  So I couldn't very well go "I would never say something discriminatory against anybody", when in fact I do.

But thanks for paying attention.

You know who really annoys me? People who take forever ordering at my local bagel place. It's like, you don't have that many options. Pick a bagel, pick a cream cheese. Move on.

Other people that annoy me:

--People who talk at the theater

--Holocaust deniers

--People who prefer pan and scan

I know it's a bit late in the game but perhaps a happy medium, with regard to the thread title, might be "Naggers and Other People Who Annoy You".

I feel like I've missed something special. Apparently if I dip out of this place for a bit to work, I miss everything. Fucking balls.

TzuDohNihm quoting George Carlin is more of a fucking head puzzler than Southern Baptists waxing lyrical about Ayn Rand.

My stance is more akin to Louie's... And frankly, even though Gabe could have been more sensitive with his choice of title, this had the potential to be an interesting thread before people came in and started whining about it.

Context is key, for sure. But I have always felt that us Caucasians (you know, from Caucasia) pretty much gave up our right to use that word in any way shape or form that isn't historical or academic. And even Academically it feels a little shaky.

I'm trying to formulate a joke about how Gabe didn't really write the post, but he approved it, a la Ron Paul's newsletters, but I can't find the words. Oh well, you get the idea.

Ah yes, the great empire of Caucasia, where the mead flows like honey, everyone gets their own canned meat and the swarthiness is kept to a minimum.

A friend of mine is from Spain and we get into discussions about racism all the time (usually where she encounters it). She mentions how everyone in her office (mostly Latinas from Puerto Rico and Mexico, etc) used to give her a hard time just because she was Spanish. So the world's cultural dynamic is more complex than just "White VS Everyone Else". Hm.

I'd actually say that situation is very much a part of the whole "White VS. Everyone Else" dynamic.

My Japanese mom used to tell me how Koreans and Chinese were lower class people, dirty and shiftless. My father would go ape shit telling her she was not to teach the children this crap. My dad caught a lot of heat from his family and home town for bringing home an Asian woman and their two children. I heard the same shit growing up and my mom heard her fair share but man did my mom hate Koreans and Chinese peoples. My dad could not break her of this outlook she just kept it to herself eventually. Her teachings never did catch on with any of my brothers and sisters either. Good old Dad!!! He was a helluva guy.

My brother in law has a great job with Toyota. He's one of the heads of quality control for the Camry and Corolla. Long story short he wanted to promote a guy to shift supervisor and his boss seemed fine with it. Well the next week some of the big wigs from Japan came in, which is normal, and he takes my brother in law aside and..through his translator..tells him that he'll have to pick someone else for the position. So my brother in law is kind of taken aback that something as dumb as a shift supervisor position would warrant a sit down with one of the head honchos and he's trying to talk to this guy through his translator. Telling him why this fellow is perfect for the job and how he's never missed a day of work and his family could use the pay bump. So the guy gives him a really stern face and says, "Black isn't any good." Then proceeds to get up and leave.

My brother in law was pretty floored. One because he didn't know the guy spoke english, why have a translator right?, and that he just outright said he wouldn't let the guy have the job because he was black. Crazy shit.

My God...that's just...Jesus.

Suddenly, this movie doesn't seem quite as funny anymore.
