The Underneath (1995)

Just saw this the other day(after languishing in my Netflix que for over a year) and was surprised there was no thread for it here. As of now it's probably my third favorite Soderbergh movie behind Traffic and Oceans 12. Really shocked at how great it was. Peter Gallagher in particularly suprised me. I never really bought him as a career criminal but I found myself not caring. You just sort of find yourself empathizing with him from scene one. Also really dug William Fichtner here. Easily his most weasily performance to date. The twists get to be a bit much towards the end but it never really lost me. Also it might be too early to tell but I think the hospital scene might be one of the most tense scenes in cinema history. I was falling off the edge of my seat during that thing. Anyone else here a fan?

P.S. This is my first thread, so if I made a mistake try and go easy on me. Thanks.

Superior to OUT OF SIGHT and THE LIMEY, this is Soderbergh's best crime film, with the director's most skillful use of a non-linear structure. The hospital sequence is extraordinary.

Of course, Soderbergh -- who has never been a good critic of his own work -- nearly disowned it.

Woah, woah, woah... you're saying this is BETTER than "Out Of Sight"? So you're saying I should have seen it yesterday instead of tomorrow?

I'm skeptical. Soderbergh crime film better than Out Of Sight is a CRAZY assertion.

That IS a bold statement. I don't remember caring for THE UNDERNEATH, but you got me wanting to revisit it.

Glad to see this thread didn't die entirely and that two new people will be added to the small list of people that have actually seen this. I too would put it above The Limey and Out of Sight. This movie is just the definition of cool. Shame about the shitty non-anamophic DVD they have out for it though. Hopefully a blu ray version will be released soon.

The Underneath is seriously underrated. I watched it again recently and it holds up. It includes some of Soderbergh's strongest, most ingenious, direction. I also prefer it to the original Criss Cross; even though they're very similar, the characters in The Underneath have a more realistic sense of psychological dysfunction, and the whole movie gives a greater dose of the moral corruption that stems from the characters guilt and the personal tragedy that it leads to.
