Top Gear 2012

After a lackluster Christmas special it's good to see the boys back on form. Nice little jaunt across Italy (with the Noble being the stand out of me) and Will.I.am being a genuinely interesting/inspirational (in Clarkson's words) guest.

Good times boys, keep it up.

Bunga bunga Stig was the comedic highlight of the episode. The 458 spanking these other unterautos was the emotional highlight.

As a huge music/score nerd, the breadth of stuff they're able to use on this show is just staggering... this episode alone, we had The Dark Knight intercut with Ligeti, plus Stardust, Holst, Foster the People, Tron: Legacy, Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven, etc.

Also, while I understand the criticisms leveled at this show, as someone who enjoys good music, cinematography, editing, humor, goofing around, and yes, cars... this show is the total package.

I wouldn't say spanking when the other cars are being driven by non-professionals. I'm pretty sure if uberstig had got into the McLaren it would have been a tiny bit faster.

When Tiff did a comparison in 5th Gear the 458 was actually faster.

The last 2 seasons for some reason left me a bit flat but these 2012 episodes seem a lot lot better, that first episode felt like an episode from about 3 years ago before they went really silly.

In the plums!

Will people getting hit in the balls ever going to stop being hilarious?

What the hell you damn slackers? Why am I the only one here? They even used the montage song from Team America! And in a NASCAR bit!

After the tedious disappointment of the India special, I've been happily surprised by the new series, both episodes have been great so far. While knowing and caring nothing about NASCAR, I like that they didn't do a hatchet job on it and, by sending Hammond, wisely got someone with a genuine enthusiasm for it to do the piece. And yeah, that Chinese three-wheeler (from 2004????) was goddamn hilarious, especially the 'going-too-fast' countermeasure.

Re. the score side of things - I feel sorry for those poor international viewers who watch it legally and so get whatever generic, butchered musical accompanyment is permissable outside of the UK broadcasts.

Whenever I catch reruns on BBC America or Netflix, things seem to be reasonably intact.  I'm just a casual viewer, so can't say for certain, but there's still an abundance of recognizable tracks.
