The Movie Spoof Thread

Spoofs seemed like a surefire way to mine cheap laughs, until diminished returns slowly seeped into the equation. Then Leslie Nielsen got old, Freidberg and Seltzer joined the game, and we're at this point.

I feel like spoof-centric films, which were usually a grab bag and not extremely cohesive, have become YouTube material, and spoofs from humor websites like Funny Or Die have diluted the potential for modern day spoofs at the level of stuff like Airplane, or even Hot Shots.

Do you think spoof films are dead? Can someone still make one of these and make it hilarious? What's the last good one you've seen?

I think there's still room for films that focus on genre tropes rather than pop culture, although our sensibilities have become so self-aware that even that it's even possible to spoof the conventions of the spoof genre. Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz simultaneously show how to still pull off a spoof in today's climate, and takes the concept about as far as it will go (since both loop back around in the end and deliver honest, no-shit character moments).

Wright and Dan Harmon are keeping the spoof tradition alive, mostly because they understand that its funnier to spoof tropes or generalized genre ticks than specific scenes from specific movies.
