The American is a really good film so that's a reason for me to look forward to this.

I am not a fan of Grönemeyer's music (esp. singing style) but i always wondered what would have happened if he stayed in acting, because i liked him in Das Boot. Almost everyone from Das Boot had a decades-long career in Germany. Even Grönemeyer, though not as an actor. Somewhat amazing.

Loved The American and will certainly be looking forward to this.

Even though I love the pulpier stuff, like your Ludlums and your Bonds, I came to the spy genre the opposite way. With the headier stuff. I'm loving this current mini resurgence of the format.

I see a kind of beginning trend of films getting more "nostalgic"/ back to the roots in general. Hugo, The Artist, Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy... i would even count stuff like Drive (though it is its own beast). All these are a counter program to your typical Hollywood fluff. The American reminded me of these european crime thrillers from the 70s/ 80. I don't know why though, because visually The American is very modern. But its atmosphere says "i don't care about your expectations, this is my story and i'm telling it with my own pace."
TV Shows too: Mad Men, Boardwalk Empire, etc. These shows are slowly told, need your attention over the whole season to understand them... i see a trend there...

I hope the trend continues.  As much as I love pulpy and bombastic stories, we're LONG overdue for a tonal (and stylistic) change-up.  Whether things look to the past or move onto something entirely new, I'm ready for a different course.  I love cheeseburgers and pizza, but I can't eat 'em all the time.
