I see a kind of beginning trend of films getting more "nostalgic"/ back to the roots in general. Hugo, The Artist, Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy... i would even count stuff like Drive (though it is its own beast). All these are a counter program to your typical Hollywood fluff. The American reminded me of these european crime thrillers from the 70s/ 80. I don't know why though, because visually The American is very modern. But its atmosphere says "i don't care about your expectations, this is my story and i'm telling it with my own pace."
TV Shows too: Mad Men, Boardwalk Empire, etc. These shows are slowly told, need your attention over the whole season to understand them... i see a trend there...
