If you know a kid - or an adult, even - who enjoys reading, get them The Tripods series. Highly recommended. There's a reason it's still in publication after 45 years - very well-written, and just as relevant today as in 1967. He wrote some great post-apocalyptic fiction much of which is, unfortunately, OOP.
