Ronin (1998)

I forgot how well this held up.  Solid action thriller from Michael Bay's dad (no, seriously, Bay is Frankenheimer's bastard son).

I think this is just before Deniro started becoming a parody of himself.  The best car chases I've ever seen in a movie and plenty of twists and turns to keep you on the edge of your seat.

One thing I remember about seeing this as the cinema was the movie was LOUD, AS, FUCK...they must have had the volume all the way up.

Saw this three times in the theater.  Walked out, got in my car, and rallied for a few hours each time.

THIS is how you do a thriller.  It's perfect.  Lean and mean with absolutely ZERO fat.  Great characters and great dialog.

And yes, some fantastic driving.

It holds up very nicely, a movie for grownups in a sea of adolescent shit, that was a wonderful tone setter for the cerebral dramatic action films that would come after it, most specifically the Bourne films.

It's got De Niro actually egaged, Bean, Reno and sarsgaard are all aces and then of course theres Natascha fuckin McElhone...

Still a movie I go back to when trying to explain to younger (typically by less than 5 years too; it's fucking sad) friends how action movies are when they are at their best. Then I move on to Mann.
