2012-2013 NFL season - Page 21

There's been a lot of talk about Schiano around the media-verse in the past couple days.  I think he's bush league, mainly because that whole "play till the whistle" line is bullshit.  If it were real I would respect it, but that's window dressing, a lie, and a weak ass alibi to hide behind.  The teams talk about it before the snap, the offense tells the defense they're taking a knee.  Schiano's move was purely to injure players, realistically on the purported level of what the Saint's bounties are portrayed as.  The fact that Bucs players anonymously acknowledged after the fact that they were embarrassed to do it tells the whole story.  Schiano is the poster child of the culture the NFL wants to change (excepting the fact that Goodell is a lying hypocrite, but that's for another time.)

I don't think it's so much about "intentionally injuring players" as it is about "being a complete douche."

I'm just worried the Chiefs will have a high draft pick 2 years after 2 (seemingly) fantastic QBs came out, and the Chiefs will be in a Sam Bradford-type situation. Taking a nice QB, but one who's not really worthy of #1 overall.

Wonder what Schiano would have said if Carolina jumped on the Bucs when they were taking a knee at the end of the first game this season.

And speaking for Clint and Mangy, our first set of NFL picks is due to hit CHUD tomorrow afternoon.  Please read and only respond positively, because positive comments are what the internet is all about.

Wow, my first CHUD column, er, paragraph. Too cool! Thanks for the opportunity.

"Wow!  This article is entertaining AND informative!  Thanks!" said probably no one this week.

My thanks also for the opportunity to contribute.  Looking to pull in a Robert Z'Dar reference in next week's picks.

By the way, my upset special: Seahawks over Packers. BOOK IT, in whatever you use to book things.

That column is crap ton of work.  Your contributions made that the largest thing I have ever posted.  3500 words.  And we will be back next week.  Great job you two, and I hope we get some feedback in here.

Wow, solid column, though I do have to be a negative Nancy on this one...

I don’t see it happening again, especially to a team that may make the playoffs only because someone from (The NFC West) division has to :

Uh, let's think about what teams are in the NFC West for a second.....there's that one, starts with an "S", ends with an "an Francisco."

Also, I'm not sure if it's your bag or not, but I tend to love stat-backed arguments. Which are tough to make 2 weeks in, small sample size and all. And if you have zero interest in it, I wouldn't expect you to do so. Just a suggestion.

I believe it. Even when I was knee-deep in football on Sundays, there were games I just could not have given two flying fucks about. Doing this column, you can look at something like a Cle/Jax tilt and HAVE to do some research and come up with an opinion, whereas the natural reaction is "glad I don't live in either of THOSE markets"

I'm also a bit of purist in that doing a "pick 'em" is one thing, doing picks VS THE SPREAD is what you do if you've got any stones. (Aside - I got in with a bunch of guys doing a "gambling league" - $100 entry, 4 picks per wk - either spread or o/u - best winning pct gets the pot. I finished dead last 3 yrs in a row)

Vs the spread is so very difficult when doing an article because we have to start basically on Monday with prelim picks, and normally the spread doesn't settle until injury stats are better known.  I stand corrected on the Seattle statement and am subsequently removing it from said article.  That's kind of one of those markets for me as I have always been more AFC based.  What a horrible screw up on my part.

Eh, no biggie, just a minor brainfart - NFC West is one of those "who IS in that conference, anyway?", like the AFC South.

Even though I'm in Trojan country-L.A.-and surrounded by USC fans, including family members, I would be weary of drafting any USC QB. Trojans don't exactly have a great track record of producing NFL quality QBs: Carson Palmer, Matt Leinert, John David Booty, even Mark Sanchez's success is dubious. I honestly don't see Matt Barkley being a great, game changing NFL QB.

And that's what worries me....

My first pick is looking AWESOME right now.  Can't wait until Eli decides to start playing the 2nd half and they make it 54-0.

Although in one FF league I picked up Andre Brown and started him like 10 minutes before game time.

I picked up Brown in both my leagues, one league I needed him, the other was to add depth, I started him in both, over AP in the one.  And sorry about the first pick bub.  I don't think I warned you, I am a professional, and I hustled you out of the 50 dollars we bet this week. (did I forget to tell you that before you agreed to write?)

Make sure you the dominant 5-11 display in week two (I was so deflated I never really tallied my final, but I don't even think I did that good.  I almost decided to drop the column before it really got going.)  I have two of those in a row, and I will be trading spots with Mangy.

All those stat-mongering QBs BYU churned out in LaVell Edwards' day sucked in the NFL.

Except for Steve Young.

It's certainly a legit concern to be wary about a player from a program where that position NEVER translates into the NFL (my own personal rule of thumb? If you are thinking of drafting a Florida St DL, go slam your hand in a car door as punishment and then pick the next guy on your list), but then again, do you want to miss out on a good player because "well, the last guy flopped..."?

That's why GMs make the big $$$.

FSU DEs, actually.  The DLs aren't too bad.  Also include UM QBs on that list.  You had that run of Jim Kelly, Kosar, and Testeverde, and then it went off the rails from there.

I dunno, Jim McMahon and Ty Detmer had pretty decent careers.

Heh. Be careful; as an avowed Browns fan, it's clear that I don't make smart choices.

And UF wide receivers.  Geez, I remember when the Bucs had both Jacquez Green AND Reidel Anthony.  No wonder Keyshawn looked like an upgrade.

When Chris Collinsworth is still your best pro WR alumnus, you know that your position habitually underperforms in the NFL.

Actually, Wes Chandler has better career receiving numbers than Collinsworth.

Yeah. When it's all said and done, though, Percy Harvin will be the best. But nobody really classifies him as a true WR.

Except fantasy football.

So which school is it that's putting elite QB's and WR's into the league year after year?  And why aren't they winning more national championships?

McMahon was OK, Marc Wilson started some games but was always disappointing - Ty Detmer played in the most fun college football game I've EVER seen, but as far as a "decent career" - career backup, holds the NFL record for most ints thrown in a single game. NOT a decent NFL career.

I would have had this information available in a heartbeat a few yrs back, but I've fallen off the wagon - but still, it's not exactly unheard of for a university to have a run of solid-to-great pros come rolling out at a position (the aforementioned Miami QBs, Penn State in the 70s-80s as "Linebacker U", USC's OL in the 80s, etc).

Felix Jones, McFadden, and Peyton Hillis were all in the same backfield at Arkansas, and USC has been churning out Pro Bowl LBs for the better part of a decade.

What the hell no talk of the utter dismantling of Cam Newton by the Giants? Jeez. I know people give no credit to my team but come on! It's amazing how great they played in a short week and with half of there team out. With no doubt Eli is the best QB in the league.

The Giants looked good last night. Eli and Andre Brown both looked great. Also, the Panthers suuuuuuuuuuuuuck. This article on Grantland published today provides some handy insight into their GM's ineptitude.

Steve Smith also let Newton have it on the sidelines for sulking on the bench after he got pulled in the fourth quarter instead of watching the game and being a leader.

Arturo RJ, The...Declawing of the Carolina Kittens, was an...Awesome Sight to behold!  Ramses Barden finally has a break out game 4 years after he was drafted!  It was clearly a...GIANT Win for NY!

Thanks I know when I go to work Tomarrow I know people will say the Panthers just lost the game that's what they say every week which is utter crap keep hearing that from Packer and Patriot fans.

I was very impressed with NY--I don't feel too bad about picking Carolina as 90% of the "pro" pickers I saw also chose Carolina.  It can only go up from here, right?

Just remember, aside from the W/L tally, they don't keep track of HOW wrong you are...."ZOMG, the Panthers are going to run for 300 yds and beat NYG 45-0!" counts the same as "total coin flip, I'm going with the Panthers because it's in Carolina"

Maybe the Giants are going to recapture the mojo they had in '08 up until the point their idiot best WR shot himself in the leg.

I honestly expected a much closer game, not saying the Giants suck, but that I though more of the Panthers.  I stand corrected.  Arturo RJ, they looked like a defending Superbowl champ last night.  Not a Superbowl slump team.

RG3 was right.  The Rams are dirty.  In less than 5 minutes they have a PF against a punter when they hit him in the back after the punt was away and they pushed Cutler down on a no call because the refs don't know how to protect players.

Fuckin' 49ers defense!

You're KILLING my fantasy team!

Wow, so the Bucs finally put LeGarrette Blount in on a meaningful play and he goes for 11 yards.  Why are they not just alternating him and Marting and pounding people?

Teams are just in love with throwing the ball and I don't get it.  Bears should have run the ball all last week and they choose deep routes that got Cutler killed.  This week they start running and some good things happen.

Greatest show on turf really/penakty changes started this.  Add the Saints and GB who won with defenses that were weak, but got turnovers, made everyone a copycat.  With so many weak offensive lineman I'm shocked there isn't more running.

I'm also starting to think Josh Freeman is just never going to be a franchise QB.  I don't know if Raheem screwed him up or if it's just him, but he just seems to indecisive, and way too hesitant to move around and make plays with his feet.

This Jaguars / Colts game is a story of whichever team makes the last mistake is going to lose.

I never thought much of Freeman.  What QB's did TB pass up these past few years?

I picked SF/Det/Pitt in suicide pool.  Was thinking of Chi/Indy/Pitt but changed.

Plz Det.  don't fuck me over.  Atleast if SF looses, many picked them.  I can handle 2 picks left if there are less than 600 people left after 3 weeks.

Could have started Charles.  Figured the Chiefs were more likely to fall behind and abandon the run a bit, so even if Jamaal had the higher upside, Sproles would be safer.

Fuck.

The Vikings are allowed to exceed expectations once per season. You are now watching this season's instance. I'm enjoying it while it lasts.

Niners- this is why we can't have nice things.

Yes, because if he's at QB he can't throw passes that clang off his own helmet.

Well, thanks to Gruden keeping them just good enough to sniff the playoffs but just bad enough to miss them, we were always drafting in the middle of the pack and not really in the mix for a rookie QB (besides, Gruden draft a rookie QB?  HA!).  When we took Freeman, he was pretty much the best QB option available.  And his 2010 season put us in the mind we were set at the position.  So we passed on Andy Dalton in 2011 to take Adrian Clayborn (who got hurt AGAIN today).  Aside from him though, there weren't any QBs that would have made us give up on him.
