Feels like this will become a big part of the story of the changing NFL if they somehow connect this to brain injuries.

The TMZ story even references the Dave Duerson suicide.

Seau drove off a cliff after being arrested on domestic violence charges. Sounds like the last few years were rough.

I would guarentee it's related to brain injuries and not about Domestic violence stuff.  I bet even the DA alligations had something to do with brain injuries.

Prediction-NFL will come down extra hard on helmet to helmet hits.  multiple game suspensions.

All the while promoting "The Top 10 pants-shitting hits of 2012" or whatever bullshit countdown that always seems to be on the NFL Network at any given moment.

I know that people don't want to hear about football related head traumas because it might tone down the game, but: THIS. IS. A. FUCKING. PROBLEM!

Chicago has already signed Ashlon Jeffery to a 4 year deal.

EDIT:  In other great news for the Steelers and bad news for the Ravens...Terrell Suggs tore his Achilles Tendon playing basketball.  Ouch.

I read he did it during his normal off-season workout regimen in Arizona.  Maybe basketball is part of that, but it made it sound like he was working out.

It's not about brain injuries.  It's about a guy who went from being a prince to a pauper.  Some people can't handle the spotlight going away from them.  When you are known exclusively for one thing, and then that one thing is gone, who are you?  What is your worth, your value?  You don't need to get hit in the head to feel that way.

So, apparently in OTA's the Seahawks players got a little heated and some pushing and shoving was done (as has been the norm with practices throughout the years).  So a player went to the NFLPA and now Seattle is losing 2 days of OTA's because of the dust up, ie, "excessive offseason workouts".  The funny thing is--this isn't in the "headlines" of any of the usual sports websites.  I had to dig, even on the Seahawks website, to find it.  Not that it's a big deal--but I heard the guys on the NFL SiriusXM show this morning, and I didn't know what exactly they were talking about.

It happened again the next day in New Orleans. Shutdown Corner posted a story about both incidents.

At least their first-round draft picks aren't blowing .24 on the breathalyzer... AFTER already having one other DUI.

The Jaguars Caravan is rolling into Savannah today. I'll be there, daring Blaine Gabbert to hit me with a football from 10 feet away and also getting Greg Jones to sign a jersey. Pics to follow, mostly of the ROAR cheerleaders.

Closest I got other than the autograph line.

The new-look Blaine Gabbert. I hope his pocket presence is also new-look.

FB Greg Jones getting interviewed by local TV station. HIs son, however, is all in with the Buzz Lightyear action figure.

Wow, Gabbert and Jones look thrilled to be there! I kid. It does suck about Blackmon. His press conference wasn't exactly inspiring, either. Hopefully things will work out for him.

I just saw the new Detroit Lions version of the NFL Play bus commercial. After the last year, it's unintentionally funny. "Remember two things, kids: Smoke as much weed as possible, and aim for the knees!"

Yay, Greg Jones!  Looks like he's still as huge as ever.

Percy Harvin apparently has asked the Vikings to trade him.  And MJD still hasn't shown up to any camps, meetings, etc., for Jax.

How much is Harvin worth anyways?  He's a decent WR though.

Goshdangit! Who am I supposed to draft in the first round for fantasy this year?? MJD possibly holding out. AP coming off injury. Forte coming off injury/contract dispute. Brees contract dispute. Manning coming off injury. Bowe contract dispute....sonofagun!

He's probably worth more to the Vikings than most other teams. But he's pretty darn versatile.

DamnDirtyApe, Maybe Harvin will be traded to the...New York Jets, for a reunion with Tim Tebow!  On the other hand it would be...great to see Harvin in...Miami!  The Dolphins have receivers that couldn't even catch a...Cold, on their roster.

I had Devone Bess on my fantasy roster last year, Duke. What a waste.

HAHAHAHAHA!  Me too...

DamnDirtyApe, Well if you must pick a Dolphin WR, then either Davone Bess or Brian Hartline are the...Best receivers on the team.  Sure last year Brandon Marshall was there, but the geniuses that run Miami think they will improve without a...#1 WR!  If they didn't like Marshall's attitude that is fine.  However, the so called...Braintrust, could release the...Remaining WR's and nothing would change.  It would probably be better to have the...3 rookies make the team, along with Ocho...Stinko err...Cinco!

Wes Welker was the best WR Miami has had in the last decade.  Except Miami had him mostly returning punts.

Ryan Leaf begs to stay in jail. God, that photo is depressing.

In Brownsland, the talk is still that they're going to trade McCoy, which baffles me. Holmgren's continuing love affair with Seneca Wallace is a mystery. EDIT: To clarify, I'm talking about who will back up Weeden, who seems set in stone as the starter at this point.

Martianman, Well you are right to a point.  Both...Nick Saban and Cam Cameron, felt that Welker was strictly a punt returner, and never gave him a chance to start, despite the fact that there weren't any good wrs on the team.  Randy McMichael was the...First good TE, that Miami had, but he was cut, as he had too many...BIG, off the field domestic troubles.  One time he threw his wife off a moving car.

They cut him because he showed up the Miami QBs with that throw.

I find it quite amazing that we haven't read about the death of Ryan Leaf. Not wishing the guy ill, I'm just saying that at this point the guy's lucky to be alive. Even though Jamarcus Russell was the 1st overall pick I'd still say Leaf was clearly the bigger bust!!

Who exactly would want McCoy?? And if they trade him does he expect to be a starter ot a backup??

I think McCoy could be a solid backup for a team seeking to add depth. He's shown steady improvement when he wasn't having his brains scrambled by James Harrison.

I don't think he's going to be a number two guy anywhere, the only place he'd really have a chance to compete would be Cleveland. There's a handful of teams he could be third stringer/practice fodder for.

Nah, he's better than "practice fodder." An elite starter? No. But considering his stats improved with literally no offensive weapons, he's not just some chump, either. Am I overrating him because I got his autograph last month? Probably.

Just run through some rosters and look at the backup QBs. McCoy could easily get a #2 job over some of those has-beens and never-weres.

You know how they say TV adds 10 pounds? I'm pretty sure NFL scouts assume Cleveland removes 10 QB Rating points.

I'd assume he'd have to go to a West Coast styled, short passing offense. Buffalo comes to mind, but they just picked up Young. I don't think the Niners, Seahawks or Packers would pick him up. I'd say it comes down to St. Louis, Philly or KC.

Funny sidenote: I got McCoy's autograph because my in-laws bought me a ticket to see him speak at a fundraiser, and also threw in a Cleveland McCoy jersey. Weeden was picked 5 days before I met him. I didn't bring up the draft.

At least you have Trent Richardson, who's worth at least a handful of wins himself

what about the Texans?? If Shaub isn't a 100% McCoy could start in his place, plus it'd be like the prodigal son returning.

The Texans have a third year backup who won a playoff game last year.

McCoy would fit well in the Texans' offense....I'm pretty much resigned to him having at least one awesome performance after he leaves the Browns. Tradition and such.

I'd say Philly. He's better than Kafka and ditto Trent Edwards.

If he's on the waiver wire, he's exactly the kind of guy they'd pick up - low risk, moderate possible reward.

They really seem to like Graham Harrell, but I'd take the reasonably competent and experienced McCoy backing up Rodgers over some guy who has yet to throw an NFL pass.

Ah, The Onion . . . so funny, so cruel. The best part: My wife thought that article was real.

Interesting article at Grantland on teams making the leap. I find myself getting geekier and geekier about play formations nowadays. All of those late-night viewings of ESPN NFL Matchup have paid off. Has anybody checked out the Essential Smart Football book? I'm thinking about buying it.

While you can certainly do worse than having Holmgren run your front office, and this current incarnation of Browns has certainly done that, I think he's done a good job drafting since he's arrived. The only move that's questionable is McCoy, but at the time he had to draft that kid. While I don't think Weeden is the long term answer, and I have a feeling even Holmgren feels this is a short term solution, I strongly believe Trent Richardson might be the best rookie back since Peterson, and he's at the very least going to be putting up similar rookie numbers. Wouldn't be surprised to see a divisional standings resembling the AFC West from last year, with the last place team only a game or two out.

Towards the start of the season we should post our end of season standing predictions, would be fun to see who comes the closest.

edit: buy that book. I grabbed a copy when it first came out, it's not coming off your coffee table.

There's another book that an analyst/former NFL exec on NFL Network on SiriusXM wrote called "Take Your Eye Off the Ball" that's supposed to be really good about the intricacies of the game.

It wasn't Millen or Lombardi was it? Because I don't take anything that comes out of their mouths without a pound of salt.

Here's a link to the Smart Football website. He only blogs maybe once or twice a week, but it's always interesting stuff.

I noticed that the NFL is now allowing access to the All-22 camera that coaches use to fans for an additional fee. I don't think I'm willing to go that overboard just yet, but I bet it will lead to some good writing in the future.

The "Take Your Eye Off The Ball" book is by Pat Kirwan. Looking at Amazon, it comes with a DVD containing specific plays, etc. Looks pretty cool.

It was Pat Kirwan.  He's a pretty sharp guy on the radio.  He negotiated contracts, managed the salary cap, and was an asst. coach, among other things.

EDIT: Ha ha, as Mangy said as well.

Barnwell is my favorite NFL writer at this moment.

I spent part of my 4th reading the Essential Smart Football. A great, quick read that perfectly balances nerdly minutiae with plain-spoken tactics and history of the game.

Adrian Peterson was apparently arrested this past Saturday, and it sounds like it could get UGLY.

It's funny how ESPN reported the Brees story.  They kept harping on the supposed million dollar gap, but it was common knowledge that the Saints had put that on the table weeks ago.  While someone may have, I never heard anyone bring up that the sticking point could have been guaranteed money, when what else could it have been, honestly?  $60 million over three years guaranteed... sounds about right to me.

He signed? Good for him. They needed to get that deal done, and it should have been done sooner and not as ugly.

I certainly think Brees deserves the $$$$ since he is without a doubt the most important person for his team in the entire NFL (other than Brady of course), plus he's loved in the city and means so much to the great people living there. Still, I wonder what all this will mean for the team's ability to sign other key players. When 20% (roughly) of your payroll is locked into one guy will he have the weapons on offense -or defense for that matter- to take the team to another Superbowl.?? !
