Bad visual FX - Page 2

Thread Starter

Sommers is probably the worst offender.  I like the fun camp of his films, but the FX are usually terrible.  The Indy films were fun camp, but they took the production values seriously, which is what made them so great.

Yeah, you're right. Going after those flicks for their bad FX is like going after Roger Corman movies for the same reason.

Still, any excuse to remind people of the glory of that clip.

There are many instances where subpar f/x work actually enhances the film or is otherwise completely appropriate. FLASH GORDON wouldn't work at all with photo-realistic looking effects. 90% of the film's charm comes from.the obviously faky looking effects. I thin that DEEP RISING benefits from this as well...it doesn't take itself seriously in the slightest, and the effects work within the context of the film's overall tone.

Deep Rising pretty much IS one of those SyFy creature features, only with a great cast and a (semi) competent director.

I love puppetry and know full well that the movie's made before digital CG and compositing were such easy available tools, but the non-suit xenomorph in ALIEN 3 is so godawful wonky. The optically-composited puppet never looks part of the scene due to different color shadows and visible matte lines. Harryhausen's stop-motion beasts in front of rear projection from decades prior look more in-scene than this "freight train with teeth". Sorry, Fincher, just another thing that just doesn't work in your flick.

I was wondering when that one would turn up.

Most people I know mistake Alien 3's puppet for shitty CGI.

Damn shame that effect went so damn wrong, as it's pretty cool in theory.

Yeah, I love the concept of Bunraku-style miniature puppet racing around and I guarantee it would look better these days with digital compositing and color correction.
