Wow what an episode. This season is finally starting to hit its stride.

The rhyming off of all of Danaerys's nicknames was hilarious when it was met with Davos' "Yeah, well, this is Jon Snow, King of the North."

Jaime's long walk from the courtyards and ramparts of Highgarden until he finally reached the keep might be my favourite sequence in the series. I loved it.

"...the Night King introduces javelin to the Winter Olympics..."

Oh well done.

So I was laying in bed this morning thinking about you, Schwartz....no, wait...

I was laying in bed thinking about the just ended season and how much meta material found its way in. I began to ponder the resolution to Game of Thrones we are currently speculating and I wondered how thinkpiece-y you would want for your blog to be at any given point. I wonder if you'd be interested in writing something about the possible ending of the series.

On the one hand the trope subverting show could continue to subvert said tropes and end with a patriarchal monarchy upended for something female-led/inspired

-or-

The show disappears up its own ass and becomes too fanservice-y and gives us the popular meta inspired happy ending which potentially upends what we have seen coming for six plus seasons.

I'm no writer and maybe I haven't explained myself well but I'd be interested if you had something to say about the possibilities before us.

There definitely have been a lot of "remember whens" this year, but I think at least some of them are justifiable. Brienne and the Hound would want to share notes on Arya, and the Lannisters would want to talk about who killed who. The "still rowing" gag crosses the line.

I include a fair amount of speculation in the recaps; it's one of the ways I keep it interesting and from endlessly repeating myself week after week.  I try my damnedest not to repeat the exact same thought at any point, which gets tricky after writing up 47 episodes and counting.  So I kind of want to hoard what angles I have not completely explored for the last batch.

This goes hand in hand with my inherent skepticism of the more, as the kids are saying these days, "performative" aspects of thinkpiecing; I also get fed up with a certain school of critic less because their social agenda is offensive to me than because tedium quickly sets in when I can guess exactly what a writer will have to say before I click on the piece. I don't want that to happen with any of my pieces. Hence the recurring gag of "Half Assed Moralizing" to undercut any time I catch myself going off on sociopolitical tangent. There are many and more writers out there who are perfectly happy to wax moralistic about this show or movie's social value or indiscretions. I don't feel like there are a ton of people digging into the specifics of scene construction, seasonal architecture, and genre awareness on a regular basis. Or at least that's what I tell myself to keep my interest from flagging.

Which is all a roundabout way of saying that I am less likely to do a discrete, forward-looking piece on Thrones because I don't want to eat tomorrow's lunch tonight. If I were to do anything between now and next season, it would likely be looking backward. I was sitting in the airport this morning and started idly toying around with a list of the 7 best moments from each of the first 7 seasons (that being an important number in Westerosi religion/culture, in case the nerd stench wasn't heavy enough). That could be something light to whet my appetite during this long hiatus, perhaps.

The "still rowing" line may have been a bit much, but the line was coming from Davos so I was willing to forgive it.

The rowing line was bad.  It didn't fit the actual character dynamics, like the Hound and Brienne discussing Arya, because of course they would.  It felt like they were discussing screentime on a TV show, which is not a thing the characters know about.

A review of the show which perfectly encapsulates its strengths and weaknesses. The Duffers' ability to recognize what works bodes well for future seasons. Agreed that the Steve/Dustin scenes were aces. You right gudnstuf.
