In the vein of our much coveted Watch-A-Longs, I'm debating starting a CHUD monthly gaming club. In an attempt to gauge interest, what form should such a thing take?

Option A: We pick a multiplayer title and play the shit out of it as a group, or even better as a clan. We pick a night, we pick a game/console(s) for that night, and we clean house. Old Republic seems like it'd be a likely, easy, and AWESOME target for this.

Option B: We do it look an actual book club. We pick a title (likely an older, well-respected/little-played, or at least interesting one, that we can put on the back burner to an extent), play to a certain point, each week, discuss on the boards, an article might accompany. Something like Alan Wake that was the source of many a differing opinion, would be great for this.

Any thoughts, questions, other ideas?

I think we could do both, but with alternating weeks for MP and SP/Co-Op/ what not. However I voted for book club style just because it'd likely be easier on everyones schedules.

I went with Option B.  For one, I'm just not that big a fan of multi-player.  And really, that sort of thing seems like it could be organized at any time, without the impetus of a "club".

I went with A...but if these games end up being PC games I wont be taking part due to not having a PC. LOL.

I would also like to add a suggestion, that we should only do recent games. And it should be put up to a vote as to which game we play. Or maybe which style of game we play at least. IDK i'm on a cafffene rush

Everything picked would be current gen, but I dont wanna limit us as to be too recent. One of the titles batting around in my head as an option is the original Condemned, which is still sitting unplayed on my shelf.

The multiplayer thing is a good idea and I'd be willing to participate, but I 'd prefer option B.

I don't have a dedicated gaming PC so I'd be stuck with games that I could play off of my macbook pro. I do have Windows 7 installed through bootcamp so it's not really a compatibility issue. I just vastly prefer playing games with a controller rather than the keyboard, and a lot of PC games don't have controller support built in.

But if we're talking about multiplayer console games I'm in.

I don't think we should keep it too recent, just to avoid this hitting our budgets too hard.

-EDIT-

I'd be willing to check out Condemned. I still hear it being referenced when people are talking about games that perfected First Person melee combat.

Option A. I'm 100% down with some multiplayer skirmishes. I suck and regularly get schooled. But I'm a sucker for punishment.

Justin, as you know, I'm good for both, I think it'd be great to connect more with our great community here at Chud.

I think it's possible to do both as separate things, for sure. Game Club and Community Playdates, etc. I definitely won't be partaking in The Old Republic, as I don't have it, probably won't ever get it, lol.

Games I'd like to offer up for Game Club:

- Condemned

- Kane and Lynch: Dog Days (seriously, my favorite gaming experience of 2011, though the game came out in 2010, I only got to it this past year, but I'm dying to play through it again)

- Bayonetta

- Gears of War 3

- Bastion (gotta rep my indie love somehow)

- Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare

- Calling (Wii)

Games I'm always down for, multiplayer-wise (XBLA):

- Halo: Reach/Anniversary

- Battlefield 3
- Gotham City Impostors (so much fun)

- Call of Duty 3 (not Modern Warfare) (community is thriving)

- Bioshock 2 (still has a lively community)

The PC side of things is out for me since I have a laptop that can barely play Civ4, but on the xbox side of things I'm all over it. I selected option B, only because it's a bit hard to tee anything up with you guys when time zones are so disparate.

As far as older games we can compare notes on, I'm going to be incredibly selfish and nominate the original The Darkness, as I have it and am playing it currently. It might also be nice to revisit for many since the sequel is getting so much attention right now.

I went with B, but I wouldnt mind some multiplayer events from time to time; one of the best multiplayer experiences ive had was a CHUD Cod:MW match were we played in the smallest map with the max number of players; life expectancy after respawing was 10 to 15 seconds top, and it was a glorious frag fest.

Some Old Republic would be nice, since I need to start playing that one in multiplayer or do the flashpoints.

On the xbox side,Space Marine would be nice; game has a really nice, fun and easy to pick and play team based multiplayer; Red Faction: Guerilla is a  blast online too.

If everyone had it I'd say RDR for multiplayer 7 days a week and twice on Sunday. Getting a posse of film geeks together to ride the plains is some serious, serious wish-fullfilling fun.

It'd be like chuds very own Westworld.

I never played RDR on Multiplayer and would love to hunt down some ne'er do wells.

I'm on the PS3, and I've never been able to successfully connect with a friend on RDR.  So frustrating.  I don't know what the deal is.  I can join some random game just fine.  Same thing happens with Uncharted 3.

It never seems to be a problem for racing games like Burnout Paradise, Blur, and Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit.

The Rain Dog and Mr. Tyres, I'm in for that, RDR Multiplayer or The Darkness!

I'm on PS3, jsut so you guys know.

I could be up for either version.  I play stuff on PS3 and PC, mostly.

For the record, 360 and PC here, plus my dust-collector (Wii).

Got the trifecta. Once I have a new desk, I'll have a decent gaming PC too, but I'm far less likely to play on it.

Also, Bayonetta's a FANTASTIC idea, since not nearly enough people played it, despite being possibly THE best straight up action title this gen.

I talked a bit about Bayonetta two weeks ago on the podcast I co-host. The game is very divisive, which could make for some great discussion between us all.

Yeah, it's kind of a "you're either down from the first 10 minutes, or you're out" proposition. Because that rabbit hole only gets deeper (read: absolutely bugshit insane).

I've only played a small percentage of the game and I honestly say I'm down. I love that game.

If everyone has at least a basic pc setup, may I suggest for a fun, old(ish) school RTS we can all have an opinion on and play against each other...

Gotta be available on Steam for cheap. Lemme check. Ten bucks. Worth it, I'd say.

Worth every penny of ten bucks and then some, damn fun RTS that captures the perfect tone for its subject matter - and if I can play it on my shitty old laptop almost everyone should be able to.

I think i may be one of the few that actually finished bayonneta (and loved every single second of it), so im down for giving it more love.

Also, some fighting games should make it here, specially if they have spectator modes.

Someone recently mentioned to me that they never played Half Life 2. I was floored, but after I got over it I thought I would mention it here.

How about Half Life 2? if I'm not mistaken Orange Box did come out for all the systems and the game does present itself in chapters so we could set dates to complete certain chapters by.

 I'm up for THAT....

...and if those assholes on the 'Black Mesa: Source' team ever get their collective thumbs out of their collective arses and FINISH the damn thing, I'd be up for THAT as well!!

Half Life 2 is a fantastic idea, though, the last time I played it, I got severe motion sickness, something I've never gotten in an FPS before.

I'm definitely down for another go at Half-Life 2. It's weird how I'll be playing other games this gen and it feels like I'd rather be playing HL2 or Fallout 3 instead. It happens a lot. At least now I have Skyrim.

Bayonetta is a great suggestion as well, been meaning to play it.

Personally, I have a bunch of games I've picked up used(and inexpensively) from Gamestop and either haven't gotten around to playing, or haven't gotten far in. X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Bulletstorm, Prince of Persia(the Cel-shaded one), Bioshock 2, etc.

What if some of us have never played Half Life 1?

HL1 is cool if you want the backstory, but honestly you could basically read a Wikipedia article on it and dive into HL2 and its subsequent two episodes and still be equally blown away.

On that note: Does The Orange Box for PS3 suck as bad as people say it does? That was my favorite thing ever on the 360.

Bioshock 2's definitely going on the list. It's like the 2010 to Bioshock's 2001. That's complimentary, i might add.

My first ever playthrough, i had only ever gotten halfway through HL1. Limped my way through the rest on PC, and didn't feel like I gained anything from it, really.

Good news! It sucks marginally less.

Can I just say I have no interest in Half-Life or anything related to it? I know, as a writer, I should go nuts for it, but on the podcast I do every other week, we trashed it and I have no regrets.

It's worth playing EVENTUALLY just for shits and giggles, but really, anything relevant to what that series becomes happens in the first 20 minutes and the last 20 minutes.

I'm ALWAYS down for more Half-Life 2. Still the unchallenged pinnacle of FPS games. And I will debate anyone claiming otherwise to death.

Metroid Prime? Get that weak shit off my monitor.

Choose your weapons, sir.

Gladly.

Believe me, it's kinda neck and neck for me, but Prime has about 30 hours gameplay, operating at an unwavering 60FPS,  and, gravity gun aside, innovates WAY more with FPS mechanics than HL 2 does. The story/telling's stronger overall in HL2, but there's so many awesome facts and stories to be gleaned out of the scanning system its ridiculous.

I'll also stick my neck out and say, you take Ravenholm out of the equation, Prime absolutely creams HL2 in terms of creating fear and tension in the player spread through the game instead of 2 or 3 spots.

It deserves its place.

Oh yeah: SOUNDTRACK.

Your move.

Um, I'm down for this. I've got a PS3. I'm TVSmith on the psn. I play Uncharted 3 and Bioschok 2 a lot. I am a loser. Let's kill each other.

Technically speaking, HL 2 gently brushes Prime aside as it passes by so it won't hurt it.

In terms of creating a believable and relatable cast it has yet to be surpassed in its genre. Its animation system manages to create more character with a couple of eyebrow raises and a shoulder shrug than other games manage with hours of "Hollywood" voiced cut-scenes. City 17 is a masterpiece in atmosphere creation. The cold light, the run down buildings, the omnipresence of The Combine, the looming Citadel, create an air of quiet despair and hopelessness that is dangerously close to being actually unpleasant for the player. Ravenholm which you so conveniently put aside, besides being scarier than the huge majority of the supposedly "scary" games, provides with the help of another thing you put aside, the gravity gun, some of the most refreshing gameplay in an FPS to date.

The combat scenarios are ridiculously varied, yet still manage to be a part of a cohesive narrative. From corridor shootouts, to vehicle sections, to combat arenas, to sniper battles. From proto tower defense to micro escort missions. All in the narrative. Without the need for Family Guy style flashbacks. Even the bane of all FPS games, its "platforming" sections, are exciting and immaculately designed.  And to top it all off, they subvert the usual difficulty curve. The end of the game is not nearly the most challenging part of it. You're empowered, supercharged. You tear through the Combine like the Hulk with a sadistic grin on your face as you toss the enemies in the air like toys. And in the end, at the moment your triumph...

...the rug gets pulled from under you. You're not the almighty hero everyone believes you to be. You're a tool, a weapon to be used at the whim of beings playing a game you're not fully aware existed. At the height of your accomplishment, with a snap of the G-Man's fingers you're back to the nothingness you came from.

Prime certainly deserves a place in the Pantheon, but there's only room for one on the throne.

So, I'm on PC and 360.

RDR - Well up for some chewer possee action. Been meaning to give the MP on this another whirl.

Bayonetta - It'll be a nice excuse to play through it. Have it, enjoyed it but got ditracted with other stuff and never finished it.

Company of Heroes - Why the hell not? It'll be no fuss grabbing it off Steam, so will give it a shot.

As for other candidates, some chewer SWTOR sessions would be great, and from what I've seen from the demo the ME3 multiplayer could be fun as well.

Essentially, though I've gone through it (gotten sick doing so, mind you, lol), I definitely don't think I have it in me to go through it again. It's got interesting concepts going through the story, but overall, it doesn't do anything for me.

Oh my God, Bioshock 2 is a game I could go through again in a heartbeat. It'll give me an opportunity to make the decisions I didn't make the first time around.

If an RDR Chewer-posse saddles up on the 360 at some point in the next couple months, count me the fuck in.

Hard to declare a clean winner the Metroid Prime/HL2 contest, but I've heard on good authority that the Phazon Mines make St. Francis Of Assisi want to kick babies.

Okay, well I haven't played Half-Life 2 myself and since I can finally play fps's again at last, so I'd be keen for that as well.
