Indie Games!

Hey guys, I wanted to get a thread going about what indies you guys play or have played, and what you may be looking forward to on the horizon?

I'm currently playing a lot of Revenge of the Titans, Bastion, and Party Boat.

I'm looking forward to whatever Ska Studios has coming up next, as well as whatever the creators of Serious Sam have in store for the character!

We'll keep this thread super-casual, no pants necessary, but by all means, discuss whatever's on your mind!

My nephew adores Rock Of Ages and has just discovered the Sam & Max episodic series that came out a few years back on XBLA. Bastion I've played the demo of and loved but need to wait until I have time to play it, which won't be in the forseeable future. My nephew loves it so much tho he's saving his pocket money for the full version. It's great, he's an 8 year old game addict and has access to my xbla so is constantly playing indie games. To be honest he plays them more than the big ones. It's kinda heartening and makes me wonder if there'll be 'alternative' gamers much as in music as the culture develops beyond my generation.

That's really encouraging, for sure, Rain Dog. Rock of Ages is such a kooky and fantastic title, it blows my mind that it even exists. Those guys also released an "FPS" (I use quotes because it's a fighting game, really) called Zeno Clash that came out on XBLA. It's also available on PC, too, through Steam or direct download. It doesn't have the humor or charm Rock of Ages has, though.

If your nephew likes Sam and Max, you should nab him the Back to The Future game (the first episode is free)! He'd probably love it.

Bastion is one of those games that is so heart-breakingly brilliant in terms of how the story tells itself, it blows my mind no one's ever done it before. Not only just the narrator, but that universe and concept, coupled with The Kid's backstory, it's all so perfect.

The idea of an "alternative gamer" make me smile. I know that, though I've been writing a lot about Mass Effect and that series blows my mind, I feel that indie gaming is totally where it's at. I'll never play a Call of Duty title again, but I know I'll be picking up indies for the rest of my life, without a doubt.

Thanks for the recommendation on Back To The Future - I may have to grab that for him too. My brother and I just introduced him to the first two Monkey Islands which he loves and last night he had his first try on Sid Meirs Pirates! - again much love (the kid loves the swash and buckle)

Actually now that I think about it, the indie game getting the most play in my house is Orcs Must Die - my brother is utterly obsessed with the thing. In fact, it's been interesting seeing trends start to appear in indie gaming now just as they do in the mainstream - how many action tower defense games are popping up these days? Toy Soldiers: Cold War is another one that springs to mind as utterly addictive.

I'm dying to get Orcs Must Die, it looks great.

Toys Soldiers: Cold War is so fantastic. The first one was great, too.

When it comes to action/tower defense, I always bring Plants Vs. Zombies into the mix. I adore that game more than anything, easily top 5, though it's less action, more tower defense, obviously. Your nephew may dig it, too!

It's a damn shame you can't play Xbox downloadable indie games when your system is offline, I would blow so much cash on those dollar games.

I guess they're big for an indie now, but when is the Bohemoth's new game getting released? Battleblock Theater I think it's called. It really fell off the radar. Castle Crashers is one of the best things ever, and Alien Hominid is one of the best Metal Slug type games I've played, although it's brutally difficult.

All it says is 2012 on Wikipedia, unfortunately. I adore Castle Crashers, that game was fantastic. If you're interested in a Metal Slug-type experience, check out Heavy Weapon on XBLA, it's so amazing, you'd like it, I think, very funny and charmingly addictive.

I remember reading that Battleblock Theatre is supposed to bring Shakespearean works into the mix somehow, which is interesting, considering they're public domain. The idea of absurdly violent and cute cartoon characters slaughtering one-another to Hamlet or Othello-inspired levels is bordering on brilliant.

Cool, I'll check out the demo next time I lug the ol' system to an internet connection. Thanks.

I'm always down for good old-school shooters and 2D platformers, it's nice these games have found a home. It seemed like they were on the verge of being gone forever at one point, then indie devs and a few other companies gave them a small shot in the arm.

I just looked at your thread. I noticed particularly the comment that Braid is pretentious. I don't know if I agree with that as much as others might be apt to. I think Blow's game is just a brilliantly-written story with a beautiful twist to it. Couple that with frustrating puzzle elements and you've got Braid, basically. I love the game.
