I was recently talking with one of those "Oscar bloggers" and they said their favorite time for films was the late season, because that's when studios release the "cream of the crop." I've grown a little tired of that, though, the constant, obviously strategic position of those films, all following a certain set of unwritten rules in order to be the most inoffensive enough to win an award.
I thought about it and realized my favorite period of the year was usually February, March and April, because that's when the studios, indie or otherwise, are most willing to take chances, to throw shit at the wall and see what sticks. As a result, you see a lot of unfinished movies, some great ideas with mediocre execution, and weirder, stranger experiments. It's a helluva lot more surprising than the prestige-off that most studios stage in November and December.
My least favorite is still January, though. Aside from award-season spillovers, there's rarely much to see. Though last month almost seemed like an exception to that.
What's your favorite time of the year for movies?
