I know the films themselves have tumbled into that "eeww! 1990s!" area of dismissal recently, but James Hong's bit in WAYNE'S WORLD 2 is superb.

Wilbur, the masochistic dental patient played by Jack Nicholson in LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS. Bill Murray is fine in the musical remake, but Jack got there first -- and he's funnier and more committed in the role.

It took 115 posts to arrive at what is easily the dictionary definition for the "Great Single-Scene Character"? A gaggle of ball-droppers, we are.

The T Rex from the original King Kong. A hero is only as good as his villain.

The "punk on bus" in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home

The funniest thing about this character moment is the cod-Sex Pistols song with it's Lydon-esque lyrics like, "And IIIIIII berate you!".

Good Lord, yes. Being shocked by Kong breaking the T-Rex's jaw is one of my earliest childhood memories.

Just beat me to it, damn you.

Lebowski is FILLED with one-scene-and-out guys who are great - David Thewlis, Ben Gazzara, the Sheriff, the angry cab driver....even Tara Reid makes an impression in her lone speaking scene...then again, hot* blondes saying they'll suck one's cock for $500 tend to do that to me.

EDIT - ...Jon Polito....

Speaking of David Thewlis, his extended scene with the kind, altruistic security guard (played by Peter Wight) in Mike Leigh's Naked is a legendary one-off character scene.

Can I take a futures pick on whoever plays the Human Piranha if anyone ever adapts Liar's Poker? I'd think a guy whose main appearance has lines like "If you fuckin' do this, you've fuckin' fucked" would make an impression.

I see that and raise you his role in Due Date. The funniest part of the movie, imo.

Jim Jarmusch has been good for these. The Limits of Control is basically a string of great single-scene characters, leading up to Bill Murray. (Night on Earth might be too, but it's been years since I've seen it.) Then there's Gary Farmer in Ghost Dog and Crispin Glover in Dead Man.

Cameos rather than characters but to hell with it. Devito wins all the cookies.

Icing on the cake is that there are episodes of fat, unshaven D'Onofrio in later years of Law and Order CI where he looks like Hank Quinlan in Touch of Evil.

Buscemi only has lines in one scene, but is in a couple more at the end.  Farley has several scenes throughout.

No thanks? What does that mean? Means you ate before you came down here? All full. Is that it? Naw, I don't think so. I think you're too scared to be eatin'. Now, see we're sittin' down here, ready to negotiate, and you've already given up your shit. I'm still a mystery to you. But I know exactly where your white ass is comin' from. See, if I asked you if you wanted some dinner and you grabbed an egg roll and started to chow down, I'd say to myself, "This motherfucker's carryin' on like he ain't got a care in the world. Who know? Maybe he don't. Maybe this fool's such a bad motherfucker, he don't got to worry about nothin', he just sit down, eat my Chinese, watch my TV." See? You ain't even sat down yet. On that TV there, since you been in the room, is a woman with her breasteses hangin' out, and you ain't even bothered to look. You just been clockin' me. Now, I know I'm pretty, but I ain't as pretty as a couple of titties.

Drexl's remembered for that one scene, but he's actually in a pretty long scene at the beginning of the movie as well.

His character changes so much between the two scenes that I think they BOTH qualify.

;) - I TOTALLY forgot about the first scene until you mentioned it.

Vanessa Redgrave in "Atonement"; she's in it for just one big speech, and she ends up owning the whole movie.

If you're talking about Sam Kinison, absolutely.
If you're talking about the great rack that Rodney walks in on, absolutely.

Actually, you could fill up several pages on this thread with memorable racks. The nurse from NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 3: DREAM WARRIORS comes to mind.
