The Inessential Blu-Rays

For every Planet Earth or Lord of the Rings EE, there are several Blu-Rays that have disappointing transfers, a dearth of extras, or both. How about a thread that warns folks about some of the shoddier Blu-Rays on the market?

For example: Goodfellas. Be sure to get the 20th Anniversary Edition, which at least appears to have a ton of extras. I got this bare bones edition that had hardly any extras and a disappointing, muddy transfer.

I also recently bought Universal's release of Traffic, not realizing that Criterion was going to release one a couple of months later. It appears that the transfers are comparable, but the Criterion's set of extras is amazing and worth the higher price.

What are some of yours?

The Predator blu has a pretty disappointing transfer. It's still slightly better than the DVD, but nowhere near enough to justify a double-dip.

I have read from multiple sources that the Total Recall blu is equal to or possibly worse than the dvd release.

I think pretty much any Arnold film from the 80s that has made its way to bluray is suspect.

Pretty much from what I understand. The Conan the Barbarian blu is awesome, though.

A lot of WB's early blu releases leave a lot to be desired. Unforgiven is probably the one the comes to mind first. Decent transfer, but the lack of a lossless audio track is a big disappointment. WB just released a new version of the flick this past week, but it's just the old disc in their Digibook packaging.

Total Recall is just awful. The Running Man made it out okay. Picked both up for $4 each on Boxing Day.

The French Connection was brutalized.

What was so wrong with the TOTAL RECALL transfer?

Sent my copy packing back to Amazon last summer the moment I found out that some flack at Universal had trimmed out the whole (Milius-approved) "Moby-Dick" scene between Conan and Subotai near the end of the film.

Like...WTF?? Hanging onto my "International Version" DVD copy for the foreseeable future.

Dirty transfer, tons of noise.

The one in the UK is good, region free as well.

I've heard the blu-ray release of The Crow is nothing special, and if you have the special edition 2 disc DVD then it's not worth spending money on upgrading to the blu-ray.

If you have this edition like me, then it's not worth upgrading:

I was tempted once because the blu-ray is out in Germany in a wonderful steelbook edition.

Really? It's a brand new transfer and it's pretty damn good I think. Also there is a commentary from the director.

Also scratch what I said about Total Recall. There is one coming out here at the end of July that has a brand new transfer and high def sound all for 10 bucks. At least that is one thing the remake is good for.

That's what I heard for the Region B release, one negative was it was too grainy compared.

I recently picked up Casino, the Universal 100th Anniversary edition. I found the transfer really disappointing, especially in the early scenes; lots of grain and specks and muddiness. It clears up for much of the film, but it's still a lousy way to treat the images of Scorcese and Robert Richardson.

Just be thankful it has lossless sound, unlike fucking Goodfellas. Two releases on Blu-ray and no lossless track.
