I just....

 

 

This guy is going to get out and probably land a book deal, get a movie based on his life, and probably a fucking reality TV show (Hanging with the Zimmermans).

 

I know this wouldn't solve a damn thing and would probably make things worse, but I wouldn't object to someone putting a bullet through this guys head.  I don't think I could deal with someone like him reaping the benefits from such an awful situation.

Yeah, he's going to get off and become the latest Republican cause celebre. And everyone will shrug and say "that's the law in action" and there'll still be an unarmed dead kid at the centre of it all and America will continue its inexorable march towards complete self-implosion. This feels like the case where a good chunk of the U.S. population is finally going to out itself and start owning the fact that they're nasty, ignorant, bigoted shitheads, because there's no way you can side with this guy and be otherwise.

The impression amongst the legal community seems to be that Mara has no control whatsoever over Zimmerman and is pretty much fucked in terms of trying to prevent him from making an ass of himself. Kenneth Bailey Roop, 52, has been charged with second-degree murder for killing 30-year-old Nicholas Rainey.

 

A co-worker who witnessed the shooting said Rainey had knocked on Roop’s door, but received no answer. While Rainey was walking down the drive-way, Roop pulled up in his pickup truck and asked why Rainey was at his house. Rainey explained that he was selling steak and seafood. The witness said Roop then pulled out a black handgun and shot Rainey. As Rainey lay on the ground, Roop fired another bullet into the back of his head.

 

Roop later told police that he shot Rainey in the head “for effect” and that he had three no trespassing signs on his property. Roop said he feared for his life.

“I’m not going to give him the chance to do something to me,” he told police. “I was in fear.”

 

An off-duty Collier County sheriff’s deputy was nearby and heard the gunshots. When she arrived at Roop’s property, she found Rainey dying on the ground while Roop was in his garage reloading his handgun.

 

“He was telling the officer, ‘he stepped on my property, he trespassed, I’ll kill anybody that steps on my property,’ somewhere along them lines. It was just unbelievable,” one witness told the The News-Press. “She never flinched. She deserves a medal. I don’t think he was done [shooting].”

The deputy ordered Roop to drop his weapon and held him at gunpoint until police officers arrived.

 

Roop’s neighbors described him as “the neighborhood crazy.” Roop has a concealed weapons permit and approximately 14 firearms.

Seriously, there has to be something in the water down here.  Living in Florida nowadays is somewhere between terrifying, heartbreaking, and absolutely confounding.  I would guess somewhere between one in ten to one in twenty people are what most of the rest of the U.S. would consider to be "normal."

 

On a possibly unrelated note, whatever is affecting these people makes them immune to the seemingly weaponized mosquitoes introduced in the past couple of years.  At first it was just the tiger mosquitoes, but now all mosquito bites itch about ten times as much as a nosee'um bite, which itches about ten times as much as a normal mosquito bite.  They swell up like a wasp sting and within a day or so become agonizing, shingles-like blisters that ooze keratin or something, then take about a month to heal, itching more or less the whole time.

This is a pretty eye opening vintage documentary that was never released anywhere, about the origin of the fanatical gun culture in America.  There's some shocking, uncut and violent imagery, so be warned.  Don't worry, it's not faces of death.

I'm fascinated by that doc as a period piece, and I didn't even know about some of those incidents.

 

It really doesn't say anything though, and feels very exploitative.

This is pretty much my opinion of that docu. as well.

 

It may have started out as a good idea, but it doesn't dig into the sociological or philosophical reasons why the US seems to love it's gun/violence.

 

I've mentioned this here before...there is another docu. that I think deals with the gun/violence debate a bit better.
