Right?!?! I admit, morbid curiosity keeps bringing me back there just to see their thought process. It's interesting though that, some rabid nuts aside, they've all pretty much accepted that this was murder and are now getting angry about them "politicizing" this issue. The classic "They're gonna use this as an excuse to take away ALL OUR GUNS NOW!" frenzy they fall back to every time something like this happens despite the fact that it never has and (unfortunately) never will affect gun laws.

God, I so want to be outraged by that.  But all I can feel is impressed with the way social media has allowed us to broadcast "I HAVE EARLY ONSET DEMENTIA" to the world so clearly.  Even Grandpa Simpson would call the old coot ranting about the perils of sweatshirts a nutbag.

"Hoodies are killers"

"Corporations are people"

Will somebody please "Voight-Kampff" these motherfuckers so they can learn the difference between people and things?

Then again, knowing Conservatives, they might think that a "Voight-Kampff" test consists of Jon Voight reading from Hitler's diary & quizzing you on it.

This is probably not a stretch.

How does Zimmerman keep getting to be called a "Neighborhood Watch Volunteer?"  He was self appointed, and not registered with an official watch association.

Worse than that, they call him "Neighborhood Watch Captain".

"Captain Of The 'tard", more like.

Yep, I was totally wrong about  all those electronic signatures having some effect, as opposed to the actual hard work on the part of the victim's family to keep this in front of the press. In any case, I am gratified to see actual protests in the streets and the unrelenting press coverage (the true causes of the heat coming down upon the Florida cops) actually making some difference in this. I don't know if they'll ever get a conviction in this thanks to how badly the immediate investigation was handled, but there are many forms of justice in this world of ours.

  FUCK YOU GERALDO!

I just heard on Rachel Maddow's show that Newt Gingrich was disgusted by the President for making this a racial issue. Of course its a racial issue! All somebody has to do is listen to the 911 tapes. If there really was such a thing as karma, Newt would get really sick, and his wife would leave him...for a women.

I wonder if he'll be charged w/ 1st degree murder. I think he should, but I don't see a jury convicting Zimmerman, nor even a judge.

This is gonna be one long drawn-out case. And I have a feeling it ain't gonna end well. APOCALYPSE FLORIDA (2012)!

When I lived in Oakland I owned a Hoodie...it's a very practical bit of garb. You can walk about with head uncovered, but then if it starts raining or gets cold (both happen a lot in Oakland in the Fall and Winter) you simply flip the hood over your head and you are protected from the elements. No need for an umbrella (which can often get shredded in the winds that also spring up, esp downtown) or a hat.

One early Sunday morning two Oakland PD came up behind me whilst I was walking to a 24 hr Fitness center, and gave me a ticket for the heinous crime of JAY WALKING! (now you know, Chewers, now you know). When the officers hailed me and I turned around, I saw a priceless expression of disappointment cross over their faces as they saw I was a white, middle-aged man, and not Tupac II (in fact I was pulled just a few blocks from where Tupac was hauled away for the same crime). Nonetheless, both officers were very obviously primed and ready for me to do something, anything, to justify beating the shit out of me.

On another occasion, I was walking near Lake Merritt, again with the Hoodie up, again with my back turned, and some asshole in a Limo threw a bottle at my head. It literally whizzed by my left ear; had it struck home, I'd have suffered a concussion or even a fractured skull (that thing was moving).

Point being, part of racial profiling is hoodie profiling. That particular bit of clothing is identified with Black people. It's stupid and its reductive (just like racism in general) but it's out there.

The "Trayvon was on top of Zimmerman" bullshit got some play over here this weekend. Some of the ugliness it brought out in commenters/journalists was really upsetting. So tired of Republicans only being interested in the rights and feelings of the perpetrator when said perpetrator is one of their poster boys.

EDIT: Holy God, that Examiner "article" and pondscum commenting on it. Enough to make a guy hope for an apocalypse.

Holy balls, Geraldo is fucking nuts.

So I'm guessing the same would go for me, as a 37 year old white guy? All through the winter I thought I was keeping my head from freezing the fuck off while I was playing Russian roulette.

Or he is not fucking nuts and he just needs a translator. Let's try:

"Hey, black males. Would it kill you, trying to look a little less black? You're scaring people. Put on a suit! Maybe a polo shirt or a cardigan. Less Fresh Prince, more Carlton."

How did I do?

A question: the new movie with Ben Stiller...do we really want to idolize anyone who belongs to a Neighborhood Watch at this point in our culture?

I wouldn't be surprised if there is a scene of them harassing a minority as a comedy bit.

My one hoodie is bright green, and says "sorry"  http://www.glarkware.com/hoodies was prescient (it's not for sale anymore, sadly)

I read some righty/liberterian economic blogs.  The commentary (and comments) are unsettling at best.

Good enough post, but the comments, oh god, the comments.

Also, AP is reporting that Trayvon was suspended for marijuana residue in his bag.

I read this in the voice of Stephen Colbert as Geraldo during the Kato Kaelin bits on the old Dana Carvey show.

"OJ, my black brother..."

the amount of violent rhetoric being voiced about this incident is starting to become really, really disturbing....

It's only going to ramp up now that there's a picture of Trayvon with gold teeth, and the Marijuana suspension.

I don't like where any of this is going.

That's right, if that young Negro had busted out a few rhymes, maybe combined with a soft shoe shuffle, that ole racist "Neighborhood watch" guy would have put away his gun and handed out a fucking Lollipop.

Counterspin:

http://gawker.com/5896437/according-to-a-friend-george-zimmerman-couldnt-stop-crying-after-killing-trayvon-martin

I thought Martin jumped Zimmerman from behind?  Now he's saying he got punched when he stopped Martin, there's even action movie dialog!

I don't think there will be any resolution on this.  There is so much crucial evidence that's probably been lost or tainted by now, Zimmerman can tell any story he wants to the grand jury, and there will be very little to refute it.

Zimmerman being a crazy, possibly racist, gun-owning guy on a power trip is one thing. It's a bad thing, but it will always happen.

The justice system completely failing is a much larger and scarier problem.

interview on NPR/Talk of the Nation today

Baxley seemed to be adamant that the SYG law is a 'good' law to have on the books.

Quote:

Op-Ed: Why I Wrote 'Stand Your Ground' Law

Florida's "Stand Your Ground" law faces increased scrutiny after the death of Trayvon Martin, the unarmed teen who was shot and killed by neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman. State Rep. Dennis Baxley (R-Fla.) co-sponsored the law and says it does not appear to be applicable to that case.

Seriously.  I was riding with my brother and some friends when a story about this came on the radio.  One guy, in a joking tone said something along the lines of, "well, the fucking ni**er clearly had it coming."  I called him on it at the time, and he tried to play it off, but still...  I wanted to punch him in his fat face.

Later, I mentioned to my brother how I wasn't comfortable hanging out with that guy anymore, in light of those comments and him generally being a douchebag with a coke problem.  Somehow, the Geraldo comments were brought up, and my brother defended both, saying, "you've got to admit, they have a point."  Are you fucking kidding me?

It reminds me of the years I lived in the south.  Whenever other white people found out where I lived, it was always met with an "oh man, that's a bad neighborhood."  No, it fucking wasn't.  Lower income, yes.  Predominantly black, yes.  But the bulk of my neighbors?  Families, kids, older ladies and grandmothers.  The kind of people that would have barbecues every weekend, and get decked out for church on Sundays, and who were, like me, just trying to get by.  Yeah, real bad neighborhood.

All this stuff about a scuffle: couldn't Martin equally claim 'stand your ground', if he were alive? Or do you need a gun for that? (sarc)

At the moment I mostly think about the pile of shit the girl at the other end of the phone is in for.  Particularly with the nuts keen to defame Martin around.  Her version doesn't seem to suit them.  But I think she'll be under pressure to adjust the story from all directions.

Regarding "Stand your ground." Both the wording and the spirit of this law make me profoundly uncomfortable.

Stand your ground does not apply here.  The moment Zimmerman stepped out his car and confronted the kid, he was in the wrong.  If anything Martin had a stand your ground defense with his fists.

just wanted to add...

"The moment Zimmerman stepped out his car and confronted the kid....AFTER being specifically instructed by law enforcement  not to confront the individual...

Oh nice. Now it's even uglier.

Can Zimmerman even turn himself in?  Would the police arrest him?  Seems he'd be safer in police custody.

And this stand your ground bullshit seems like an easy excuse for people to just walk up to someone, shoot them with no witnesses and then claim self defense.  The other side of the story is dead, so the killer can make up any story he wants.

And Zimmerman had made a total of 46 calls to police, ALL involving suspicious black males.  How many arrests for a supposed crime?  ZERO.
