HIV is a really good example of what medicine can do when it’s firing on all cylinders (or almost all, can you imagine how fast we’d fix something that affects only middle-aged straight white men?)

Still, in my lifetime the condition has gone from a certain death sentence to a dangerous but manageable chronic illness.

The fact that Price wants to turn it back into a public health scare has a ton of dog-whistle to it.

(The VA race has been fascinating to watch, between local republican pols disavowing Gillespie's Trump-esque racism left and right, to the fact that the Dem's pursuit of the fabled white vote has led them to neglect outreach to voters of color, to the fact that everyone who went nuts for Jon Ossof has barely mentioned the VA race...)

Well, this guy's an asshole:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/post-nation/wp/2017/11/01/n-j-police-chief-said-black-people-are-like-isis-and-hed-like-to-be-on-the-firing-squad-feds-say/?tid=sm_tw&utm_term=.20753847626e

Quote:

The former chief of a small township in New Jersey has been arrested on federal hate crime and civil rights charges for what federal authorities described as a pattern of racist comments and behavior — including slamming an African American teen’s head into a metal door jamb and saying that black people are “like ISIS.”

Frank Nucera Jr., 60, who had been chief of the Bordentown Township Police Department, was arrested, and the charges against him were unsealed Wednesday. The allegations are notable for the blatant racism they describe in a law enforcement leader.

According to a criminal complaint in the case, filed in federal district court in New Jersey, Nucera frequently referred to African Americans by racial slurs and espoused violence toward them. In November 2015, for example, when he was talking to a subordinate officer about an African American man he believed to have slashed the tires of a police vehicle, Nucera said, “I wish that n‑‑‑‑‑ would come back from Trenton and give me a reason to put my hands on him, I’m tired of ’em. These n‑‑‑‑‑s are like ISIS, they have no value. They should line them all up and mow ’em down. I’d like to be on the firing squad, I could do it,” according to the complaint.

Nucera also used police dogs to intimidate African Americans, bringing canines to high school basketball games when his department was providing security and positioning them near the entrance to the gym, federal authorities alleged.

Efforts to reach Nucera’s family members were not immediately successful, and no lawyer was listed for him in court records. Federal authorities said Nucera retired from the police department shortly after New Jersey’s attorney general was informed of the investigation.

In 2014, Nucera was reportedly shot in the leg by his own gun after some kind of interaction with a preteen at the municipal building.

The Daily Stormer would like Papa John's to be the official pizza of white supremacy:

https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/papa-johns-official-pizza-of-the-alt-right_us_59fb5b64e4b0415a420a5975

Quote:

“This might be the first time ever in modern history that a major institution is going to be completely destroyed explicitly because of public outrage over their anti-White agenda,” Sol wrote after noting the news that Papa John’s was punishing the NFL for not cracking down on black dissent.

“Papa John: Official pizza of the alt-right?” Sol wondered.

This isn’t the first time the alt-right Nazis at The Daily Stormer have tried to claim a brand as their own to piggyback their hate on a mainstream product and to stoke outrage. Last November, they threatened to take New Balance sneakers away from hipsters after the company’s vice president of public affairs, in response to a question about the Trans-Pacific Partnership, expressed optimism about what might happen with the deal under a Trump presidency. (New Balance is the only major company that still makes athletic shoes in the United States.) In January, Andrew Anglin, the proprietor of The Daily Stormer, declared Wendy’s the “official burger of the Neo-Nazi Alt-Right movement” after a flack at the fast food company posted an image of Pepe the frog in red pigtails on its official Twitter feed.

But could Papa John’s pizza really become the slice of choice for the alt-right?

Peter Collins, the senior director of public relations at Papa John’s, certainly hopes not.

Collins expressed shock when HuffPost told him that neo-Nazis were considering endorsing his company’s product. “I appreciate you bringing this to light,” he said. “We didn’t have any idea about it.”

Collins later emailed an official statement from Papa John’s on the matter: “We condemn racism in all forms and any and all hate groups that support it. We do not want these individuals or groups to buy our pizza.”

Look, I'm a total Chicago pizza snob, so I'm not exactly one to order food from national pizza chains.  With that said, I did have Papa John's once and it tasted like what a couch probably tastes like.

While initial impressions makes this idea seem appealing, on second thought it would give too many of them an excuse to plow into people they don’t like and then claim their brakes failed. I’d say instead maybe glue free pebbles inside of their tire intake valve caps, so when the caps are screwed on tighly the pebbles press lightly on the valve and cause a slow leak.

Not explicitly race-related, but on the social justice tip, the Cook County States Attorney overturned the convictions of 15 (more) men arrested by Chicago's own Vic Mackey.  CPD has a lot of laundry left to clean, even as regards this one cop, but it's a step in the right direction that you don't expect to see prosecutors take without extreme duress.

This isn't an injustice, but I've noticed something recently that I wanted to mention and this seems to be the best thread for it. I don't watch many commercials on TV, but of those that I have seen lately have been quite diverse. They may not be perfect yet, but damn if companies aren't making a better effort to show more diversity in their adverts. This applies to other marketing materials outside of the TV commercials as well. I'm really starting to see it all over.

It's only 20%?  I would have expected higher.

Also: even though the article states they "controlled for the variables," that seems impossible given the extremely broad criteria and deference allowed judges in regards to sentencing guidelines.  I don't mean difficult, I mean literally impossible.  How the hell do you control for a variable like "genuine remorse/contrition?"

McCoy's a washed up pop country song whose 15 minutes ended more than 15 years ago. This is him exploiting the simple (and mistaken) patriotism of country music fans for another chance of being relevant again.

A Baltimore homicide detective was killed with his own service weapon as he was preparing to testify against fellow officers indicted in a drug-running scheme.

Sean Suiter, 43, was fatally shot in the head on Nov. 15 and authorities said there was evidence of a struggle, The Baltimore Sun reported on Wednesday.

Suiter was scheduled to testify before a federal grand jury about a case that alleged cops in his city had conspired with officers in Philadelphia to sell cocaine and heroin seized from the streets of Baltimore, according to Philly.com.

Baltimore Police Commissioner Kevin Davis said authorities have no reason to believe Suiter’s killing was connected to his pending testimony, according to The Baltimore Sun.

“The BPD and FBI do not possess any information that this incident … is part of any conspiracy,” Davis said.

A lawyer is saying NYPD officers tried intimidating a woman accusing two officers of rape out of pressing charges:

https://nypost.com/2017/11/23/cops-tried-to-intimidate-rape-accuser-out-of-pressing-charges-lawyer/

Quote:
A group of NYPD cops showed up at the hospital where an 18-year-old woman was seeking treatment after allegedly being raped by two Brooklyn detectives, in a bid to bully her out of bringing sex-assault charges, her lawyer claims.
“They came with nine cops to intimidate her and her mom, to discourage them from coming forward and reporting the rape and sex assault,” Michael David, who represents the accuser, Anna Chambers, told The Post.

One officer in particular questioned Chambers’ story at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, where she had gone with her mom for a rape kit on Sept. 15 around 10:45 p.m., hours after the alleged rape and sexual assault, the lawyer said.

“He kept saying to Anna and her mom, ‘How do you know they were real cops?’ ” David said.

“Didn’t you make complaints about cops before?” the cop allegedly asked.

David said that his client had never reported cops before and that the officer was trying to scare her. At one point, the cop allegedly turned to Chambers and insisted, “You don’t know what you’re talking about.”

The cop was among about nine officers from the 60th Precinct to show up at the hospital, which had reported the allegation to police, David said.

Prosecutors in Suffolk County, New York found an interesting use for asset forfeiture: bonuses!

Newly disclosed records show Suffolk district attorney employees have received $3.25 million in bonuses since 2012 — $550,000 more than reported previously — as county lawmakers prepare for a hearing Tuesday on a bill to tighten legislative control over how proceeds from seized criminal assets are spent.

Bonus recipients included deputy chief homicide prosecutor Robert Biancavilla, who received a total of $108,886 between 2012 and 2017, and division chief Edward Heilig and top public corruption prosecutor Christopher McPartland, who each received $73,000, according to records obtained from county Comptroller John Kennedy’s office through the Freedom of Information Law.

This.

Used to be, in the south, racist parents would just send their kids to a private academy (also known as White Educational Flight). Now, they have found a way for public education to pay for it.

I don’t even mean that as a condemnation. When it’s your kid, I totally get that you’re going to send them to the best school available rather than limit their opportunities so they can maybe hopefully be a drop in a bucket of systemic change. I just wish we could be better at calling a spade a spade when it comes to education.

Interesting story.  Thanks.

I don't understand a part of this quote:

Quote:
“There were no people of color in that community at all,” Ms. Smith said, adding that “when white people have to deal with black people, I think, there’s a misperception of who we are, what we stand for.”

What is the "what we stand for" part referring to?

I'm assuming it's just another way of saying "who we are".

And both things... "who we are" and "what we stand for" is more in the context of things that white people could have fear-driven misconceptions of.

“What we stand for” clearly refers to white fears of replacement and reprisal.

Former South Carolina police officer Michael Slager was sentenced today to 20 years in prison for the deadly shooting of unarmed black man Walter Scott.

U.S. District Judge David Norton ruled that Slager committed second-degree murder and obstruction of justice, when he shot and killed 50-year-old Scott in 2015. The second-degree murder ruling came with a recommended 19 to 24 year sentence.

At one point during the sentencing Scott's mother looked the former officer in the eye and told him she forgave him. Families on both sides of the court burst into tears.

One of Walter Scott's brothers, Rodney Scott, told the court that the death of his brother the worst day of his life. Rodney Scott said he wants Slager to pay for his actions.
