No way a human would've gotten by Brienne.

I thought it was a nice touch having Theon try to copy Robb and failing when dealing with that guy who was talking back to him.

He really should've booted him down the stairs when the guy turned his back.  Major missed opportunity.

This is my chief fear as well. "Lord Stannis, in order to swiftly kill your enemies with minimal collateral damage, you're going to have to have mad sex with this beautiful woman every once in a while." "Hm, tough call." Also, I didn't see anything to say definitively that the shadow assassin was a once-and-done and isn't still floating about out there. Which actually makes it all the more too-facile as a plot mover (if it's a once-and-done I mean). Book readers, please do not address these concerns, thanks.

My thinking is that Davos, beginning with his hard truths this ep, is going to do what he can to convince Stannis that he needs to start keeping Melisandre more at arm's length. And Stannis' own ambition and suspicions of the witch's intentions will keep him out of her panties for a superweapon reload.

All that said, loved the episode. The Arya-Tywin staredown was the tensest moment of the hour. Can't wait to see what Arya does with her new button men. Two left!

I'm man-crushing on Bronn pretty hard at this point.  Between his description of why Wildfire was a bad idea "See, while you're lobbing stuff at them, they're lobbing stuff at YOU." and his satisfied response to agreeing to kill Lancil (?, I have a hard time with some of the minor character names) was fantastic.

And I've heard it dozens of times by now, but the theme song never fails to get me more excited for watching an episode than I am already.

Amen. When that music starts up I'm as giddy as a schoolboy.

Yeah, the smokeghost/shadowdemon/whatever solved the most difficult portion of the assassination quite handily:  Getting within striking distance.

Should have slit his throat, I'm thinking, with this lot.

Theon's "Oh ho, I can really fuck Winterfell!" smirk royally pissed me off. I'd been holding out some hope for him to not completely fall to the Dick Side, up til then. That and Bran's premonition-dream of the sea drowning Winterfell (and Roderick among the dead) has me fuming, TBH.

It also removes human error and decision making from the equation.  A shadow demon isn't going to get cold feet, or double-cross you, or screw up, or otherwise compromise the assignment.

Sorry...no idea...

I don't think anyone was arguing that a shadowdemon was a poor strategic choice for your fratricidal/regicidal needs.  Stannis would be dumb not to use it, but the concern is that these things are precisely what makes it less exciting.

I imagine at some point we'll see the consequences of just such an action.  In the balance, I believe Stannis was very dumb to use it.  I'd argue it was a good tactical choice (it won the battle, so to speak, and brought many men to his army), and will probably be a terrible strategic choice (costing him his men, his soul, his life, his wife, who knows...).

But the show continues to surprise, so I may be talking out of my ass.

Even that seems more motivated by "Ha, I'll show my crew I'm a badass" than "I really want to take down Winterfell."  That's the tragedy of Theon, that if anyone had shown even the slightest bit of faith in him, things would have gone quite differently.

Hey, Robb showed plenty of faith in that jerk!

Up until his dad and sister showed him just how much of a twat he really was, lack of confidence wasnt really his problem. Hubris was. If the Starks had been as confident in his abilities as Theon himself is, he'd be Joffrey 2.

It's just Daddy issues manifesting themselves.  Unfortunately in this fictional world he can't watch Big Fish and have a good cry and get over it like the rest of us.

I don't think that's true at all.  We've seen just how thin his cocky veneer was even in the first season, when Tyrion and the old maester slapped him down, Roz had him wrapped around her finger and even Tonks the Wildling was able to knock him on his heels.  He's always been acutely aware that he was not fully accepted anywhere, and so he overcompensates.

Also, it's not really clear what kind of abilities he really has.  He was shooting down ravens in flight at the end of last season (which is practically superhuman if he can do it as consistently as suggested), and had presumably been fighting in Robb's battles that we've been skipping past this year.  But he doesn't bring up any success he's had in battle when his old man starts blathering about the Iron Price, and it hasn't been clear if he's just avoiding that topic because anything he did to prove himself with the hated Starks would just dig him in a deeper hole with his other family.

It's a shame that this world makes him think that family and honor are so useful.  Life with the Starks is CLEARLY superior to life with the creepy Lovecraftian Oceanfolk.  Who cares about the approval of a man who let you be a hostage and blames you for this?  Like it's your fucking fault.

Enjoy living with fat ugly rapers!!  I'ma chill with Robb and his wicked sweet wolf.

Yeah but the Greyjoys have Yara, so I'm totally with them.

I have to admit I'm a little torn. I can't stand Balon for what he's putting Theon through and for what he's about to put the Starks through, and Theon's stupid choices are pissing me right off. (I have a feeling if he was taken when he was 5 or younger he'd have come "home," looked around, said "fuck this dump" and head back to Robb. Nine seems to be old enough to've imprinted enough memories of his family along with some false sense of nobility and pride, not to mention all the times he's probably had to emptily defend his name growing up with his not-really-brothers.) So, fuck the Greyjoys.

But, I kind of like the daughter. I'd totally get drunk with Yara, and have her back in a barfight.

This might as well have been called "Game of Friend Zones".  Brienne clearly got friend-zoned by dearly departed Renly, and damn did that last scene with Jorah and MY QUEEN hurt my heart.  "I look at you sometimes, and I can't believe you're real."  My God, how beautiful is that?

Brienne and Cat's Bechdel Test scene was a highlight for me, and was anyone else really disturbed by Arya's smile in the closing shot?  We've come a long way from her being freaked about killing that fatass kid last year.

Loved her smile.  I love everything about Arya!  And I like the dude who killed for her too.

I kinda love the Greyjoys because they happen to be so delightfully over-the-top in their hatred of seemingly everything that they never loose their entertainment value for me.

Plus they kind of treat Theon like he's Sweet Dee, which makes me giggle a bit.

Speaking of Arya's unexpected assassin man, did anyone else's (presumably female, but I guess not necessarily so) significant other watch this episode with them and constantly fill their ear with praise of JUST HOW BEAUTIFUL that guy is?

A friend of mine has decided that if bits of Westeros' geography have a quasi-corollary to England (King's Landing/London, The Wall/Hadrian's wall), then the Iron Islands -- off Westeros' west coast -- would be Martin's version of Ireland. Which, being Irish himself (in citizenship, not just heritage), he finds hilarious. He is SO team Greyjoy this year. Although he's annoyed they don't have his brogue.

Martin's Irish?!  He doesn't have a European accent.

*Archer voice*

Jorah's on the higgggggghway to, the, FRIEND SHIP ZONE!

The Iron Islands always seemed like some combination of the Scots-Irish/Scandinavians to me.

I think Trav meant that his friend is Irish, which is why he finds the parallels between Ireland and the Iron Islands amusing, Freeman.

EDIT:  Just checked myself.  Martin is American and was born in New Jersey.

Anyone else worried that Brienne might be required ...(there's no subtle way of saying this), to 'get her kit off'?

This IS HBO after-all...

The various places and events in Westeros tend to start from real-world precedents and then get jumbled up significantly. Politically, the North is Scotland and the Iron Islands are Ireland, but obviously their culture is fairly different. Historically, Martin is drawing on the Wars of the Roses, the Tudor reign, and various other bits of medieval history (to the extent that Aegon = William the Conqueror and the Targaryens are the Normans, I think) but he plays around with them a LOT. Robert's obviously inspired by Henry VIII, but of course he came after the Wars of the Roses. There are some parallels with what happened after Elizabeth died, too.

No love for Jaqen, but my GF finds Gendry quite fetching, and Jaime as well.

Secretly they want Tyrion.

Gendry had a kind of amazing shirtless scene in this episode.  You could see Arya salivating.  Five out of five beefcakes from me.  He's full beef.

Earlier his afternoon, I googled "shirtless Gendry" b/c I had a hunch...which proved correct. Shit exploded. Maisie Williams is like fifteen and grown women are jumping out of their seats about how they want to see something happen between them. Makes sense, I mean the frame is undeniably suggestive, and to be honest, as Williams gets older (and if Gendry remains alive) I suspect that the showrunners will probably start slowly bleeding that kind of thing into the narrative (don't know what it's like in the books).

Yep yep, sorry for the sloppy pronoun use, which is actually a pet peeve of mine, so, double shame. My buddy does indeed enjoy having a fantasy heritage of horny pirates. I told him he's getting a bumper sticker that says "I'D RATHER BE RAPING AND PILLAGING"
