Draft is on it's way, spring games are underway, coaches be recruitin' and crashin'...welcome to 2012 College Football!

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

I better get this enthusiasm out of my system before the Vols' season starts.

Yeah, I'm going through FSU's schedule trying to figure out which will be the first game they throw away to end all the "Are they back" talk (again).  I'm guessing Clemson again (although it's at home) or @ USF the following week.  At best, it will become unbearable until they play Va Tech on a Thursday night and then the bubble will be burst.

I have to say, so far, it's kind of liberating to be focused on a team that can't do anything. The Buckeyes can't go to a bowl and they can't win the B1G. This season is all about breaking in the new coaches and crafting a new identity. It could be a total disaster or it could set the stage for a big 2013. Either way, I'm very excited to see it. Also, what SEC team will win the BCS this year? Should the rest of the country even bother playing?

Mangy, what do you really expect from the Vols this year? Are you just waiting for a new coach or is Dooley getting something done?

Dan, I have no faith in Dooley. None. This is a guy that micro-manages how his team showers and when they can have Chik-Fil-A, but if you ask him to challenge an obvious safety call against Vanderbilt, he'll panic, tel the assistants urging him to challenge the call to shut up, then sit on his hands and do nothing. Also, it's never a good sign when THE ENTIRE COACHING STAFF bails in the offseason. But hey, he's got a good haircut and orange pants. Whoopee. I apologize in advance for the 5-7 angry rants that I will be posting in this thread as the season wears on.

I think the Buckeyes have a MUCH better chance of being successful right away, thanks to Meyer. However, today's article on Meyer's last couple of years at Florida were eye-opening.

Mangy, Dooley should watch tape on Muschamp coaching last year, specifically the Auburn game, if he thinks he'll get reprimanded from the SEC officials for complaining about a call.  Muschamp actually called a timeout to unleash a tirade on the refs about a muffed punt call he didn't like.

Dan, I sort of had that feeling with FSU last year after they lost their 2nd ACC game...I was like, "There's no catching Clemson now, so screw it, let's just win the rest and win the bowl game."  Which is almost what they did (that loss to UVA was stupid and brutal).

I read that article, and having followed FSU (and by proxy somewhat followed UF during Meyer's reign), I wasn't surprised by any of it, especially the info on Harvin.  It was well known by seemingly everyone that Harvin's "migraines" weren't really migraines.  There was a popular phrase that Meyer coined during recruiting "The 1% of the 1%" and every time another kid got arrested, people laughingly regurgitated that phrase.  I didn't like Meyer when he was at Utah, and of course liked him even less at UF.  It was weird--Spurrier drove FSU fans, or excuse me, F$U fans, crazy, but there was still a respect there.  Meyer seemed like, "Fuck you, I will do whatever I want on and off the field and you can't do anything about it and your team fucking sucks and oh, if you didn't understand what I'm trying to say, fuck you" although he claimed he had huge respect for Bowden.  I just think he's a dick, no matter where he coaches.  My bro-in-law is a huge OSU fan and alum, and he's jumped on the Urban train.

Spurrier has always had a bemused self-awareness about himself and the game. This comes off much better than the coaches that go on and on about character, and are then proven as hypocrites within 2 years.

Petrino is out at Arkansas. Couldn't happen to a nicer guy.

Wow.  Unless more comes out, fans are not going to be happy down here.  Still, good for the university for sticking to their supposed sexual misconduct rules. I guess.

I'm still hesitant about Urban simply because I've never cared much for his dickishness but five minutes after I read your post my best friend, who refs high and middle school baseball around central Ohio here, called to tell me that he worked a game where Coach Meyer's son was playing and Meyer actually called the dude in charge to say how good my buddy was. It's weird because I don't know why anyone would do that but it was a hell of a nice thing to do. I'm inclined to give him a chance though, I mean he is a hell of a coach and, after the way Coach Tressel lost control of the team after all those years, I believe big time coaching will sometimes lead to a cluster fuck.

I'm pulling for FSU to do something special this season. The ACC needs something good and I don't think anyone else in the conference has the talent the 'Noles do.

Mangy, I might make Tennessee my SEC team to follow this year if Taver Johnson is out at Arkansas. He is an ex-Ohio State coach so I'll follow him first but I've always liked Tennessee.

I can't wait to see what happens at Arizona and Wazzu. Rich Rod and Mike Leach are both guys who put out offenses that are just fun to watch. Same with ASU and their shit-head of a coach. Hell, the Pac 12 could start to be interesting.

Being at Ground Zero of Buckeye Nation, i really hope that Meyer's worst problems have been left behind in Florida. I know Gordon Gee, OSU's president, knows that after Tressel and the institutional loss of control over the team, if he allows it to happen again, his head is next. In truth, many are surprised Gee and his athletic director, Gene Smith, are still employed. I know Gee is a massive rainmaker for the University, being a popular figure on fundraising circuits. But even he will be unable to withstand the crowd with torches and pitchforks should we have a repeat of what we have thad to deal with over the last couple of years with TattooGate.

As for this season, I would love to see us be more successful in this lost season and still have a better reccord than the eventual conference championship. But I don't expect that to happen. Next years, though, I have high expectations. I hope we end up with a quarterback is more RG3 and less Tyrelle Pryor.

Thread Starter

Well, if past evidence of bowl bans/etc. is any indication, OSU will probably do really well this season because there is nothing for them to do in the post-season (see: USC last year, Auburn's 11-0 season).

You know, Meyer may be the nicest guy in the world, but in the "work" environment, he's a dick.  One of my best friends is a pretty nice guy, but at work, he takes no prisoners.  I worked at the same company with him for almost a year, and it amazed me how many people disliked him, but then I realized that at work he wasn't there to make friends, he was there to run the company (he was the CFO).  So maybe that's the case with Meyer as well.

There is another former UMD player who is looking to possibly go to Wisconsin to join QB Danny O'Brien--when I was in Orlando at a water park, I was waiting in line with my son to get him some ice cream, and started talking to a couple who where from Maryland and had UMD season tickets.  I asked his opinion on what happened to Fridgen, and he basically said, "We didn't agree with the administration's decision to fire Fridgen" and ended it with "...we're hoping Edsall is fired after this season."

More fun with the Vols. From Knoxville reporter Jimmy Hyams:

Quote:
UT FB team had GPA of 2.06 last fall, 1.9 among scholarship players. 30 players on academic probation, 6 walkons. 2 on scholarhip are gone

Derek Dooley disappointed with players poor academic performance in fall. Said he didn’t know full extent of report until late last fall.

So we don't win games, but at least we're an academic embarrassment. Good God. 2012 is going to be a lame-duck season for Tennessee.

Holy shit.  The ACC could get an immediate 2-up on the SEC in two days.  NC State plays UT and Clemson plays Auburn on back-to-back Kickoff Classic days.

I feel for ya with UT--at least when you're on probation you know you're not going to a bowl game before the season starts.

The "other" USC just got nailed for some stuff.  From CBS Sports:

"South Carolina cited w/failure to monitor, 3 years probation, scholarship reductions, recruiting restrictions, $18,500 fine"

And further from SI's Stewart Mandel:  "South Carolina players got drastically reduced rent, boosters paid for unofficial visits -- lose 6 scholarships. The other USC surely fumes"

Keeping in the USC vein...apparently new home schedule key ring tags got distributed, and one of the HOME games listed is "@ UCLA".  Supreme confidence there.

Notre Dame QB Tommy Rees and a LB were arrested in a "police confrontation".  Maybe the final straw for Rees to clear the way for the ever popular backup?

ACC ROY Sammy Watkins was arrested on a drug charge with a soccer player from Clemson's team.  He'll probably sit for the CU vs. Ball State and/or Furman games, although CU's first game is vs. Auburn.  Will be interesting to see how Swinney handles this.

I'm currently burning through Friday Night Lights on Netflix (so damn good), and have been jonesing for football lately. Did anybody check out the coach rankings over at Sporting News? These sorts of "power rankings tend to be useless, but they do make for good conversation fodder. Personally, I think they nailed their pick for the worst coach in the SEC.

In other news, anybody think that Florida State is Big 12-bound? If so, will it even matter once we're down to 4 super-conferences here in a few years?

Not yet for FSU/Big 12.  I think the current president and AD are in the final year of their respective contracts, and they were hired by the old administration.  After the somewhat public disagreement between them and the Board of Trustees, I would guess they won't be retained.  And no one really understands why Spetman (AD) was hired--he's from Utah, and the day that all this Big 12 stuff came out, he was back in Colorado giving a speech at the Air Force Academy (and it seems like he's always back west rather than in Tallahassee).  Everyone thought hiring an ex-military guy would be a big plus, but I haven't really noticed anything "special" he's done.  They finally got the $ for the indoor football practice facility, which was a big deal.  But this contract renewal with ESPN was shitty.  It's obviously skewed towards basketball, and by bringing in Syracuse and Pittsburgh, the ACC head (Swofford) shows obvious bias again to expanding with basketball schools, not football schools.  The idea of FSU joining the ACC was that it would "bring up" the competition in football in the conference.  But the other schools don't seem to care unless it's basketball.  Instead, FSU's basketball program rose up to higher levels, culminating with winning the ACC last year.  And since VT joined the conference, it's pretty much been theirs in the past almost decade.  Which is ironic because everyone assumed when they and UM joined, UM would be the team to beat ("All Canes Conference", anyone?).

I suggested to an FSU sportswriter on Twitter that they wait until the school wins one more ACC title, then at the stage, drop the trophy in the trash and announce their intention to switch to another conference.  And then Jimbo gives a big "WOOOOO!" and tomahawk chops the reporter in the chest a la Wahoo McDaniel.

Good call - I don't think I've ever heard Spurrier prattle on about "character" and "values"; then again, I don't ever recall his programs being under scrutiny or any accusations of his players being "out of control."

He seems to keep his assholishness between the lines and in the press room.

EDIT - AAAaaaand I should have read down a little bit further to post #17 before writing this.

I always pulled for Bill Stewart after he inherited that messy situation when Rich Rod left WV.  Sad to hear he passed away of a heart attack.  He was only 59.

Thread Starter

Sad about Bill Stewart.  One of my good friends is a WVU guy, and although he didn't hate Stewart, he felt that they were back to the Don Nehlan days of 'run it up the middle--they won't expect that' with him there.

More FSU/Clemson to Big XII news is bubbling.  A recent interview with Clemson's AD revealed that the ACC's sports revenue from last year was about 80% football-related.  And FSU and Clemson made up a quarter of that revenue.  And if you added in all other sports and $$ factors, FSU/Clemson are worth the same as BC, Wake, Duke, UNC, and Maryland combined.  FSU can't officially say they are speaking to the Big XII, but a "friend" to the university is a lawyer, and he can broker the deal and approach the BOT at FSU with it.  I could be wrong--people are saying this will be a done deal by end of June or July.  Crazy stuff.  And it won't be just those two--word also is that Notre Dame (non-football) and Louisville will also join.  ND will join in football in 2015 when their NBC TV contract is over.

I have to confess, I thought Stewart was much older than 59 years old. Sad.

ESPN has a new college football preview up today. Nothing terribly surprising, although their Predictions section has Dooley being fired from UT before the end of the season, as well as FSU's resurgence and eventual move to the Big 12.

One thing I gleaned from it: Notre Dame's insane 2012 schedule. Michigan State, Michigan, Stanford, USC, Oklahoma, Miami and BYU?!? Good God.

So apparently some UNC athletes (mainly football and basketball) have been flocking to several "self study" classes, that end up being pretty much a "no-class" for passing grades. And interestingly, they're mostly all offered by the same instructor.  If FSU got in trouble for the online class thing (which was actually a real music class), there damn sure better be some NCAA investigation of this.

It's about damn time. A rep followed up today, mentioning that they "want to take back New Year's Eve and New Year's Day for college football," so I'm guessing that's when the semifinals will be held.

They released the APR results for all schools yesterday. Last in the SEC? Tennessee. So, to go along with our subpar coaching, our constant attrition and bad luck, we're also doing bad in the classroom. GO VOLS!

If this is true, there needs to be NO other bowl games between New Year's Day and the final.  Enough of seeing two 7-5 teams playing somewhere for absolutely no reason in prime time on January 3rd.  That should be their Super Bowl week, and you don't see the NFL holding exhibition games between the Browns and the Jaguars that week.

I was wondering if I was the only one who thought major sanctions should be handed down to the program for looking the other way.  I can only imagine that those penalties would have to arise from the outcomes of the civil suits.

From what I've read, it seems to me Sandusky was like one of those guys that sort of wanted to get caught, because he couldn't stop himself but he knew he was sick.  And he still defended himself all the while knowing (hoping?) that he would be found guilty.  It's a hugely sad situation, but for once, it seems that a jury got it right.  The defense lawyers claiming that all the witnesses were put together and coached--that was just grasping for straws in a hopeless case.

The one article I have seen that speculated on his whereabouts in the penitentiary system said he would spend 90 days in county while awaiting sentencing then be transferred to a normal state pen correctional facility where he would be in general population for approximate 3-7 years at which point he would be transferred to a facility for senior citizen inmates.

I think unless he gets beaten up pretty severely he will have plenty of Colonel moments.

After the verdict, his lawyer seemed to hint that Sandusky might not really comprehend what's happening, either in the sense that he did something wrong or the consequences he's facing.  I've seen a lot of talk that Sandusky is legitimately shocked that anyone would find what he's done wrong, and that he's delusional.

This was such an odd statement.  I think the media portrayed this as him dying of shock because the case was so tough to fight.  I believe this was a tacit admission that he would be entirely surprised if this guy gets off because he's guilty as fuck.

Sandusky's attorneys were begging off the case on the eve of the trial because they claimed they weren't prepared, or so they claim in the media (where they're already building a case for appeal). Amendola's such a complete and total goof. Would YOU hire that clown as your lawyer?

Sandusky has shown a complete obliviousness that belies his "sickness." I think he was in total denial until his adopted son threatened to testify. If he goes in the general population, he'll be dead within six months. I'm okay with that.

More emails that CNN has reportedly uncovered show that (unsurprisingly) Penn State officials knew what was going on in '98 and 2001 and decided to take a "humane" route with Sandusky.  Whatever.

In sexy news you'd rather hear about, Erin Andrews looks to be taking her assets to Fox from ESPN.

ESPN reporting that the consulting agency that investigated the whole thing will release their report maybe as soon as next week, and according to an "unnamed Penn State source", it doesn't paint Paterno in a very flattering light with his involvement.

No, it certainly doesn't.

I hope all the shitheads who took to the streets over Paterno's firing feel deeply, acutely ashamed of themselves today.

That was my first thought as well. Although, when you take to the streets to defend a football coach, you probably don't have a lot of shame to begin with.

Death Penalty for Penn State Football.  I'd kick them out of the Big 10 too.

Though I'd bet the NCAA doesn't do much though.
