PACIFIC RIM (2013) Pre-Release Discussion - Page 6

Eh. I'm not genuinely concerned. I figure it won't be an issue, and am down with all levels of punching.

Your answer is in the del Toro MTV interview/trailer commentary, if you don't want to be surprised.

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

Acid for blood and whatnot, but a kaiju-sized amount.  The results of that in a heavily populated area (or just to the fighting machines in the spray radius) must be pretty nasty

Re the use of conventional or nuclear weapons, I'm ready to overlook any real world logical constraints.

The ground rules are:

- Conventional weapons don't work on giant monsters (or at least not very well)

- Nukes either don't work or will always cause too much collateral damage.

- Monsters can grow that size invalidating any 'blah blah bone density' arguments

- Similarly, Giant humanoid robots can be built to that size too.

- They also have a power source that is mostly effective, but is allowed to add certain drama when necessary - eg. Evangelions powercable and time limit

Any other criticisims are invalid as they would cause the movie not to be awesome.

If I have one nitpick... Pacific Rim is a fucking terrible name for a movie about giant robots fighting giant monsters. It sounds like, at best, a movie about a tsunami or something. At worst, one of those rom-coms with twenty-five different actors on the poster. "In Macau, Julia Roberts has finally found love... but in New Zealand, Kate Hudson is in danger of losing it..."

Or it's like when they tried to change Snakes On A Plane to Flight 157 or something. There has to be a name for this that's the equal of Snakes On A Plane.

You just know that the title in some Asian country is going to clumsily translate to English as Glorious Rocket Punch All Monsters or something like that.

I somewhat agree that it comes off as a rather bland, grown-up title for such shameless geek kiddie candy.  So, I'm hoping that there's some justification for it in the story, something that makes the phrase sound special.  Much like how Skyfall sounded rather disappointing when we first heard it, but (in my opinion) it is a terrific title on many levels once you've seen the film.

It'll be something like Super Kaiju Rocket Punch Force 5  (or Dragon Wars 2 )

That's crazy talk. The title PACIFIC RIM sounds big and badass and looks great.

It does have a Blue Harvest-quality to it, but I like it.  On the other hand, Pacific Rim 2 sounds boring.

One of my friends said the title reminded him of porn. God knows what kind of porn he watches.

The one where people get their assholes licked. I'd be wary of sharing bottles from now on.

Isn't the reason just that the monsters come from the Pacific Ocean, so the Pacific Rim is the places they attack first?  Which I agree, kind of makes for a bland title.

Pacific Rim is a pretty common way to refer to the geographic area around the Pacific ocean.

The trailer didn't really excite me much. This doesn't help.

I always thought Pacific Rim sounded ominous, but I get excited about plate tectonics and subduction zones and whatnot.

I was SO disappointed...

Haha, I just assumed everyone was thinking that and we were all feigning politeness in not mentioning it? But yeah, my prurient mind goes there every time.

Conversely, Ring of Fire implies bad dietary habits.

His mind is like mine, in that it can't not add the word "Job" at the end every time I think about it.

I'm super-glad to learn I'm not the only person out there who instinctually turns the film's title into a description of an oceanic sex act. Nice to know that...that I'm not alone.

Hell, 90% of the Pacific Rim stories on the front page use that gag.

After our conversation on Movie Moan, I can't think of Pacific Rim without wondering if the robots and monsters have sex. Thank you, Gabe T!

FilmNerdJamie, Obviously the Kaiju feel the Jaegers are too...ROBOTic, whilist the Robots feel the Kaiju are just too...MONSTERous, and...NEITHER want to give birth to a...HELLBOY or a...Golden Army!

For you, duke:

Go into Pacific Rim prepared to be transmogrified into a 12 year old. And then to pee your pants with joy. I love it so much

pfh, like what did that guy ever do anyways, amirite?

Seriously, though, sooooo excited. It'll be the 12 year old transmogrification that Bay wishes his robot movies were.

YESSSSSSS

All of his movies make me pee a little.  I'm hoping one of the kaiju hits the brown note.

This is great news!

I always appreciate fair warning before going into a movie GUARANTEED to make me piss my pants.

Something something depends. I have the flu, my ability to be witty is gone.

For some reason I thought Pacific Rim was going to put up a Superbowl trailer. But no, I was mistaken :(

Oh well, I'm still looking forwrd to a second trailer featuring non-nightime, non-raining action scenes.

Toy Fair was this weekend and there are some pics of the Jaeger toys:

I have to keep telling myself to calm down, the movie isn't coming out until July.

Hoping for a huge marketing blitz in a few months, I want MONSTERS!

Okay, panic time.

Marketing needs a kick in the pants, or this is going to do sub-Scott Pilgrim numbers.

No need to panic. It's way early. The moviegoing public's attention span and memory retention aren't all that great. I would expect the next big push to coincide with the early May releases (IRON MAN 3), to ensure maximum exposure and begin building excitement for a big summer release.

MrBananaGrabber, The WB, does have a...Super film to help promote Pacific Rim.  Maybe a...New Trailer of Pacific Rim will be shown before The Man Of Steel!

I was checking out the releases for the year and PACIFIC RIM seems to have a fairly clear window to release in. It had a good fortnight before something compareable arrived.

I said as much when the first trailer came out, but they need to show the monsters off to draw in the regular crowd. I.E a money shot of Yaeger vs Kaiju that clearly differenciates it from Transformers.

I think Mountain Dew: The Movie is going to do just fine. It is one I hear people talking about a fair amount. Remember there was a time when people thought Titanic AND Avatar were going to bomb. I'm not saying this film will do that kind of business but the idea it's going to flop seems premature. Scott Pilgrim was a tough one to market, this is pretty straightforward. Giant robots fighting aliens. This shit sells itself.

Del Toro is no Cameron, his movies are unique and personal.  Cameron plays as broad as possible.  I agree though, we need a robots fighting monsters trailer, ASAP.

Also, Mountain Dew: The Movie?  I don't get the joke.

I like Del Toro but the concept just seems like something a 12 year old hopped up on Mountain Dew would come up with. "ANDTHENTHEGIANTROBOTSFIGHTTHEALIENSANDITSAWESOME!"

You're thinking Michael Bay and Del Toro is no Michael Bay. Thank fucking christ for that.

I don't think they even had Mountain Dew in 1960s/1970s Japan.

I called it Mountain Dew: The Movie because it's about giant robots fighting aliens. It sounds like something a kid would come up with. That doesn't make it bad or anything. I like Del Toro, so I'm sure it will be fine. It was just an observation about the concept. I drank a lot of Mountain Dew and played with a lot of action figures when I was a kid, so that's just an association I make with childhood, which is when I would have thought this movie would have been the greatest thing ever. That's it.

Mike J, I thought you brought up Mountain Dew, because the Master of...BAYhem had a...Mountain Dew Transformer in Transformers 1!  It is too bad that Bay didn't get Nike aboard.  The Transfomers catchphrase could have been, Just...Dew it!  I hope Pacific Rim is as...Transformatively Awesome as Bay's Super Robot Saga!  Now if only someone could adapt...Grendizer, Getter Robo G, or Mazinger, that would be...Epic!

I'm sure it will be fine. Me saying it brought me back to my childhood wasn't meant to sound snarky, I am looking forward to seeing it.

Mike J, I am glad that with Bay's Transformers and Pacific Rim...Super Robots are finally getting their time to shine on the silver screen.

What about, wait for it, TINY robots fighting GIANT aliens?
