Ehn, I have faith Marvel will cast someone with enough gravitas to pull it off.  This is the company that made Robert Downey Jr. (who would have been an unbelievable Dr. Strange if he wasn't already Tony Stark) Iron Man, after all.  Not to mention that Strange has always seemed more mature than the bulk of Marvel's heroes.

Though given that they'll both likely be "hot" coming off of The Hobbit, either Luke Evans or Richard Armitage (I'm sure his minor role in Captain America wouldn't preclude him, would it?) have the look and fall into the "don't look like teenagers but aren't 50+ either."

As for linking the "mystical" side of the Marvel Universe...I'm sure it could be done fairly easily...just make some sort of reference that the Nine Realms of Asgard are but one source of "magic" in the world.

Though I'd be thrilled if they didn't even really try to "Sci-fi it up" and instead played the Lovecraftian card:  "There are older, darker, more alien things that walked the Earth long before the Asgardians.  It is my duty to insure they do not return."

The biggest problem I see with Dr. Strange is that while it has the potential to be visually spectacular, Strange isn't a character that's well-known for his classic/iconic/definitive stories.  He's long-published but strictly second-tier, and outside of his origin I can't really think of a single Strange-centric story that's universally regarded as "definitive" for him.  Indeed, of all Marvel's classic characters, he's probably the one that's been "mucked with" the most in terms of multiple reinventions/relaunches/etc...

Part of me would love to see a lower budgeted Dr Strange movie directed by David Lynch. 

The magic/astral plane sequences could be really freaking weird....but not necessarily "wow" weird, more like "ewww" and "WTF" weird.

I know Guillermo Del Toro was/is (?) trying to get a Lovecraft film going but if that doesn't pan out, I could see him as having the right vision for the character.

I would love for Del Toro to do Dr. Strange, and I would want it to look really, really, Del Toro.

It be would amazing if the "real world" took the same aesthetic of Iron Man, Cap etc but the mystical planes looked like the Troll Market.

Someone else mentioned Ed Norton tangentially in the Avengers thread. He'd be my pick, were it not for the fact that Satan would go to work in a sleigh before it happened.

Seriously, for some reason the idea of good ol crazy Jodo going insane with a big budget plus Ditko's trippy visuals appeals to me.

Jim Caviezel could do something really interesting with it, I think. Pre-Nolan/Bale, I wanted him to play Batman, and then I thought he'd be a great Superman. (A few years ago, he and his family sat beside me at the gate at LAX. Supremely handsome man who exudes a natural kindness and warmth. Didn't talk to him or bother him because he was playing with his kids, but couldn't help thinking, "That's Superman.") 

I second the suggestion of Vincent Cassel. I also think Jason Isaacs or Clive Owen would be excellent choices as well.

Call me crazy, but I'd like to see Cliff Curtis in the role.  There's something about him that makes me think that if you threw in a goatee he'd be awesome.

For some reason his choice would strike me as Marvel trying to recapture the lightning in a bottle they got with RDJ.

Farrell lacks the Fassbender-esque gravitas necessary to pull off the character (which could easily tip into camp) but damn if he doesn't look the part.

At this point, I think it pretty much goes without saying that Fassbender is to Stephen Strange what RDJ is to Tony Stark - perfection.

Maybe a little too perfect...

I will say this, whoever it is that gets cast, if the universe has a real sense of humour, they'll have to sign up to play Dr. Orpheus in the Venture Bros film a decade or so later...

I'm still shuddering at the thought of James Franco sleepwalking his way through a succession of Dr. Strange movies and Avengers sequels.
