The Horror-Comedy Master List

Thread Starter

One of the most difficult balancing acts a film must accomplish is when it attempts to scare you and make you laugh at the same time. It's rare, but when it happens, it's movie magic.

Given that there's a particular horror-comedy currently playing in theaters that I know many are passionate about, I figured, why not we round up the few successful examples of this genre crossbreed?

1. SLITHER

slither3.jpg

Was just watching this last night, and after those few years, was surprised to know it holds up wonderfully. It's all icky and gross and filled with AMAZING prosthetic work, but it's funny without being spoofy or dumb, and I would say it's even an upgrade over some of the 80's era horror cheapies it's trying to emulate. Non-stop fun, I can't believe this didn't play to packed houses when it first came out.

2. An American Werewolf in London.

Funny when it wants to be funny. Scary when it wants to be scary. Serious when it wants to be serious. Amazing Rick Baker work. It's a full package and Landis' best film.

3) The Return of the Living Dead (1985, Dir. Dan O'Bannon)tarman.jpg

Tongue in cheek but still creepy. Gorier than many 'serious' horror flicks. Worthy rip-off of Romero's legacy. Self-aware before 'meta' was a household word. One of the best soundtracks of the 80's. Also Leanna Quigly naked.

Army of Darkness veers into straight comedy territory, but this is the height of Raimi's spook-a-blastery.

Monty Python meets Lovecraft.  One of my all-time favorites.

7. It's okay to be trendy and obvious, right? I'm confident that this one will stand the test of time:

8. Night of the Creeps (1986)

One of my favorites of all time (check the avatar, yo). Extremely well-written with some really sharp dialogue. "Thrill me!"

11. Texas Chainsaw Massacre

Instead of aping the first film, Hooper takes the series into a batshit tangent. You got Leatherface humping the protagonist with his chainsaw and fighting Dennis Hopper in a chainsaw duel, the Hitchhiker reduced to a stuffed doll, Bill Mosley adding arguably the most insane member of the Sawyer family, and the gore that was so thoroughly absent from the original. Underrated classic.

The Goonies meets House of Frankenstein, what's not to love?

The Comedy of Terrors. Lorre, Price, Karloff, Rathbone. Directed by Jacques Tourneur, script by Richard Matheson. It's dated, a little broad in the humour department and not scary at all, but I love it. comedyofterrorsposter.jpg

Terrible DVD art aside, I wish Jackson would more films like this and less like The Lovely Bones.

Little known, but very funny and gory too.

Anyone remember this? Why is cannibalism so funny?

Because, I don't know if this is horror but it is horrific and funny:

This is more uncomfortably funny than laugh-out-loud funny, but a classic. I've always wondered how much of an influence it was on Natural Born Killers.manbitesdogposter.jpg

Unscientifically speaking, I am sure it was a big influence.

The first gore film and even almost 50 years later still hillarious.

Soo cheezy, soo lurid, soo wonderful. A perfect companion piece to Blood Feast.

How is this only getting mentioned now?

Best soundtrack ever (thank you, Damon Albarn, for this and everything else), and Robert Carlyle has rarely been better. Which is saying a lot.

I know someone was hoping Scream wouldn't get listed, but I'm still a fan of the first one. The second one is just a notch below it. The last two, well I guess I do have standards. Scream shouldn't be blame for all of the weak copy cats it inspired. The same goes for The Scary Movie franchise.

While the sequel is already listed, I think it would be a crime to not include the excellent first film.

I just finished watching this and agree it's pretty damn funny. Labine is great, too bad his shows always get canceled.

35. Idle Hands (1999)

It's a bit goofy but there's still plenty of laugh-out-loud moments.

The actual mystery here is better written and executed than all three Scream sequels. Also, funnier.
