CoD: Black Ops 2 aka what the hell... inovation and massive changes?

I'm so confused right now.

Black Ops 2 gives you moral and tactical choices that lead to multiple endingsTaking point and surveying the freeway ahead, Mason reaches a section of road that has crumbled, and is given a tactical choice - rappel down to the street below and help the president at close quarters, or use his Type 95 scope to pick off threats from a high vantage point.

Treyarch informs us that these decisions will come thick and fast throughout the campaign and, together with sandbox missions called Strike Force Operations, will change up the routes, plot and final ending with each playthrough. The days of static corridors, infinitely respawning enemies and intense hand-holding are dead. We'll return to Strike Force Operations shortly.

Gunning down hidden troops with his X-Ray scope and KSG shotgun, Mason rejoins the group at the mouth of a huge shopping mall. The street outside is collapsing around the group, forcing them indoors. However, the place is crawling with troops, so Mason uses his wrist computer to send a swarm of around ten quadrotor drones on first to thin out the ranks.

Black Ops 2's quadrotors, mechs and planes are hackable and not on rails
If you're a fan of Battlefield 3's vehicular combat, you'll love the drones in Black Ops 2. Securing the shopping mall, Mason can choose to send in quadrotors and fight alongside them on foot, or simply enter one of them from a FPS perspective and control it first-hand. How you approach and use drones is entirely up to you.

But the enemy troops manage to eventually thin out the quadrotor swarm, so Mason runs in ahead of the presidential team, battling alongside his remaining quadrotors.

The pace is, once again, intense. Reaching an open air cafe, Mason encounters a CLAW mech which, contrary to the impressions given in the debut Black Ops 2 trailer, are actually no taller than humans.

Mason can choose to fight the CLAW or hijack it by using his wrist-mounted hacking dart that fires like the Ballistic Knife from the original Black Ops. Again, the choice is entirely yours. Mason uses cover to get close and sticks the CLAW with a dart, which then gives him full FPS control over it.

The CLAW stomps around - again, entirely off rails - unloading on human troops with its deafening minigun. It's an empowering feeling, as it's a strategy that can turn the tide of battle in moments. However, a menacing roaring sound can be heard over the chaos, causing the team to panic in fear. Something very bad is about to happen.

Black Ops 2's jet combat is sandbox and is both incredible and off rails
Now back on the street, Mason and his team continue fighting but once again hear a deafening roar in the distance. Suddenly, without warning the earth shakes and a skyscraper in the distance begins to topple towards Mason. The destruction on hand looks incredible, once again underlining Treyarch's enhanced engine.

The building hits the ground violently and kicks up a dust storm that throws Mason back. The fighting goes silent, giving the player a moment to breathe and get his bearings. Harper contacts Mason to tell him that the president has been shot and is making a break for it in a convoy of armoured vehicles.

Ordered to provide air support, Mason hops in a harrier jet and takes to the skies. On the HUD, the president's convoy can be seen under attack. This is entirely sandbox and free form, similar to Tom Clancy's HAWX series, putting the dull, on rails jet section from Battlefield 3 to shame.

Gunning down attackers on the street, Mason protects the presidential convoy before a pounding synth soundtrack kicks in and a pack of around 15 unmanned stealth bombers bear down on his position. The chase is on.

Mason swoops and corkscrews around skyscrapers, peppering drones and stealth bombers with the harrier's chain gun, heat seeking Skyburst missiles, and giving them the slip using the breakneck boost function. This is the moment that many onlookers realised that Black Ops 2 isn't the same old Call of Duty, and that war definitely can change.

Black Ops 2's Strike Force Operations are the biggest thing to happen to Call of Duty in years
The only on rails section of Mason's jet fight is when he kamikazes a drone and uses the ejector seat to fly to safety. This is when the mission ends and the action moves to Singapore, and the first live presentation of Black Ops 2's Strike Force Operation missions.

Described by Treyarch head Mark Lamia as "proxy wars", these campaign missions are small sandbox wars where you are in full control. You choose which wars to wage, how to approach each objective and in doing so, will steer the plot in different ways to one of many multiple endings.

Singapore puts you in charge of a strike force as it rappels down to a dockyard swarming with enemies. The target is a freighter containing mission-sensitive cargo that cannot be allowed to leave the dock. The team has 20 minutes to disengaged two missile shields so that they can blow up the freighter. Fail, and the narrative shifts and continues regardless.

Black Ops 2's Strike Force Operations allow you total battlefield control
In this mode, you can jump between any member of your team in an instant to give you the best tactical perspective possible. You can go up a layer and pilot a quadrotor to provide air support while the AI controls your troops on the ground. Finally, you can go into Overwatch and view the map from above from an RTS perspective.

In Overwatch, you can use x-ray vision to identify hostiles, place waypoints and direct every member of your squad - both living and robotic - to help you reach your goal faster. Back on the ground, the squad are fighting through a maze of freight containers while repelling and hijacking enemy quadrotors, CLAW mechs and smaller robot sentries on tracks.

The process of hacking and turning these drones over to your side helps turn the tide of battle and the team eventually break through and secure the first shield generator. But more troops flood in and rush the unguarded area, prompting the player to switch to Overwatch view and send a swarm of quadrotors over to where they are firing from.

All three perspectives work beautifully together, giving you total battlefield control. Fans of Ghost Recon, Rainbow Six and other objective based tactical shooters will adore how fluidly it all comes together. With the shield generators destroyed, the team launches a missile at the freighter, destroying it and ending Treyarch's presentation.

Black Ops 2's campaign, zombies and multiplayer make it the biggest Call of Duty disc package yet
Mark Lamia goes on to explain that this is only a glimpse of what is the most ambitious and generous Call of Duty package yet. The campaign has huge replay value, thanks to multiple choices, routes and endings. Zombies is now integral to multiplayer, with a four vs four mode in which two packs of survivors fight the undead and each other for points.

Multiplayer, Lamia promises, has largely been built from scratch, and will cater to all skill levels - from beginners in Training Camp mode, to new modes geared towards e-sports players who play like pros. Treyarch mean business and this lengthy and exhilarating showcases gives us no reason to doubt them.

All eyes will be on Black Ops 2 in coming months to see just what other tricks the studio has up its sleeve, and as always, NowGamer will be on hand to give you the inside scoop as it happens. Stay tuned.[/QUOTE]

Um, I think they've lot their minds in a wonderful way. Shit I might have to buy this. Is this the real life?

I thought it sounded appealing until they had motherfucking Oliver North in an advertisement. My interest faded like Reagan from accountability.

The single player might have some good changes but we all know the long term play time is in the MP. This will like all the other COD titles will be a fast paced, spawn trapping, little kid filled, glitch fest.

I've been able to detect zero hype for this game.

This game will not be purchased by me for above reasons, but I'm sure as hell picking up the Trent Reznor soundtrack.

I haven't looked at preorder numbers, but it would be nice for a COD game to fail. Might actually help stir up some innovation.

Doubt it will happen and, if it does, it will be a shame it didn't happen on an Infinity Ward year.

Anecdotal evidence and all that, but the Gamestop near me already has about 100 more pre-orders for Black Ops 2 than they got for MW3 overall. With three weeks to go, and the massive marketing blitz sure to still come, I expect it to sell quite well. Black Ops 1 kept hanging out in the top 10 monthly sellers after MW3 left, so I am not sure any (perceived) disappointment/exhaustion in the series after MW3 will really affect this game.

Also, people like zombies.

So it sounds like they've taken things off the rails a bit, which is nice to hear. Although it doesn't come across as quite as monumental a change as the article is hyping, it's good that Treyarch aren't resting on their laurels. MP will, of course, be the same as always.

Still not buying it. MW2 was my flirtation with modern-day COD, and that was enough for me.

I'll admit I have no evidence to back up my assertion. I've not looked at any numbers, for instance. Mostly I'm just hoping it falls on it's face because as you point out, gaming needs innovation, and the whole robot war angle of this is a huge turn off for me.

Soundtrack will be good, I'm sure.

My brother said he will most likely pick this up, so I'll be there for the 5 hour (that's usually how long it is, I believe) campaign and co-op Zombie mode.

I will buy this because my friends will buy this. I waited too long to pick up MW3 last year, and most of them had settled down and stopped playing, or occasionally played. I am getting pressure to pick up Borderlands, but I really don't have the time for it.  It will always come down to the MP. If that works as it did in MW or the previous BO, then we will enjoy ourselves and mute the stupid, unattended 10 year olds.

I don't understand why Call of Duty has been made the mascot of unoriginality in the video game medium, when that shit is prevalent across the board. The irony gets to be a bit much when little kids rally against games like Madden and Call of Duty, and then spend their $60 on the same franchises year in and year out.

I'm going to try and do my part buy voting for a change with my wallet. That's why this winter I'm only going to purchase truly original and innovative games like Bioshock: Infinite.

Ok, so is anybody actually getting this other than me?  I'm in for the Multi-player if anybody wants to join up on the Xbox.

I've played Spec Ops: The Line.

This, of course, means that I will be judging whatever Black Ops 2 does in this regard rather harshly.

I know the feeling bro. I fired up new Minesweeper after Spec Ops and thought this is such a hollow experience, there's nothing hurt locker about this game, fuck this garbage it's shit. I played some more of the new Medal of Honor: Doorfighter in between my halo campaign this weekend - those Tier 1 operators really hate doors more than they do Al Queda. I have low expectations for Blops 2, plus I'm getting a copy for free from my peeps, so if it manages to be more interesting than Ghost Recon Future Snoozefest that'll be okay.

First mission stuff

Happily, Ed Harris' character from the first Black Ops makes a reappearance.  Sadly, Ed Harris' voice does not return.

Thankfully, Digital Michael Rooker is in fact voiced by Michael Rooker.  Which is good, because another voice coming out of that guy's face would just seem wrong.

Also BEAR TRAPS

Apparently MIchael Keaton is playing the Ed Harris character. Which is kind of awesome.

Digital Tony Todd sighting.  I repeat: Digital Tony Todd sighting.

All we need now is for Ice T, Treat Williams and oh what the hell put Bill Duke in there too.

B-MOVIE A-TEAM ASSEMBLEEEEEEEEE

I would make sweet love to all 6 foot 5 inch frame of Tony Todd, digital or otherwise. Then he would whisper my name in his deep baritone and I would collapse in an ocean of post-orgasmic bliss known to too few in this world.

Fuck.  Now I have to buy it.

Wait, you guys actually play the single-player campaign?  I'm so confused.

I don't know about Blops 2, but man-oh-man is the original game worth playing the campaign for, if only to watch Sam Worthington shout about THE NUMBERS and the absolute insanity that occurs in the third act.

It's the best one since MW.

Not only that, but I ignore the multiplayer aspect entirely. Battlefield 3 is much more my speed in that regard.

I am playing this. The gun targeting seems to be much more responsive for me. I have not seen a way to do the support bonuses. I am not a man who goes on many streaks. I would get my kills and call in support calls. But I am only level 10. I have played none of the single player, but I will. I enjoy the SP of both the first Black Ops and the MW games.

I enjoy COD for what it is.  The MP is essentially the same every year with a new coat of paint (new maps, a few more bells and whistles).  I enjoy the team deathmatch and strive to keep my kill/death ratio better than 1/1.  I'll play for a month and get tired of it.  I don't really have any friends who play this on the XBOX, so if anybody wants to get into some MP games, let me know.

I find COD's multiplayer to be too chaotic and fast. I prefer something just a bit slower, with more strategy involved.

i kinda enjoy the chaos, but I only play the multiplayer for a month or two. That's about the length of time for my so-so skills to become consistantly overmatched.

Free-for-all and Team Deathmatch my jam. Right now I am just sprinting around the maps and mowing people down with the ridiculously accurate/powerful shotguns.

If you're on PSN. OpticBeam is my name. 20 kill/18 death finishes are my game.

I love Capture the Flag games and HQ Defense. I am MrTyres on Xbox as well.

You people and your consoles. How do you play stuff at sub-1800p resolutions?

I kid.

Is it wrong that I just spent 20 minutes making an emblem before even touching the multiplayer?

Am I wrong or does this game look considerably better than Modern Warfare 3? Or the PC version, at least.

I was just thinking that. It looks beautiful on my 360.

Story's better crafted than the last two Modern Warfares, and Jesus Christ it IS pretty, but Spec Ops: The Line happened this year. Playing this after Spec Ops The Line is hitting the White Castle drive thru on your way home from Black Angus.

Parts of the campaign are stilted, finicky and over glitched, at least on my play through. I did enjoy Afghanistan though, and getting to see the giant Budha. That was a pretty magical moment. The wing suits were cool, but perhaps the under textured landscape made it somehow less impressive than the HALO jump with it's high resolution volumetric cloud-cover from Battlefield 3 (one of the highlights of that game). The Angola level, chopping people up with machetes and all that, was alright. Colossos was a commendably imaginative and beautiful setting, though it still paled in comparison to what Deus Ex pulled off with Heng Sha & the Pangu last year. The night club was pretty impressive with the number of fully rendered (and well disguised partially rendered) people on screen at once. Assassin's Creed 3 already stole some of this game's thunder though with it's equally stunning crowd scene in it's opera house prologue.

The robot stuff feels like feature creep. I've found the gameplay based around the robots and tactical map to be tedious at best. It's like the tower defense in Assassins Creed Revelations. More is not always better. I wanted the campaign to be tighter and crisper, but it's very uneven. I plan to finish it up this evening.

I skipped MW3, and have no plans to pick this up.  However, this thread made me decide to finally finish the first Black Ops campaign this afternoon, and damn, the final mission basically being an assault on the Deepcore rig from The Abyss, with Ed Harris at your side, no less...  just delightful nerdy insanity.

Am gonna pick this up when i can get some flow. I always liked to have a FPS to MPlay with my buds when nothing else is pulling me in.

I'll be picking this up soon as well for the PS3. I skipped MW3...so I need some Black Ops in my life.

I'm really digging the multiplayer, moreso than in previous entries.  I enjoy tinkering with my builds to find the one that best compliments my playstyle.  Been playing Team Deathmatch exclusively but will probably jump into other types of battles soon.

I finished this up. The final level might have been fun, but the "explosion dodging" with the powered wing suits went on too long and resulted in too many deaths, which made the sequence more frustrating than awe inspiring.

Nothing to write home about, but worth the $4 I spent to rent it from the local Red Box.

There's a sequence in the game where you take control of the lead villain and low a path of destruction through your enemies that's seemingly powered by nothing but LATIN RAGE.

This is the most amusing part of the game.

That was a supremely silly sequence. I just wish the gameplay had done something more creative with a rage powered progtagonist.

As I said elsewhere I decided I'd stop being so stubborn and once again give COD a look after COD4. So I played it at a friend's house. The above mentioned level was the last straw. Any game that starts off with fucking Oliver North as a guest star is already starting on the wrong foot. Seeing Noriega too made me want to slap myself. The rest of the level just...

Let's say I'm permanently done with this series.
