Scotty weighs in on rampant Star Trek 2. So there.

So it's Gary Mitchell?

Thing is...he kinda has to deny it.

It friggin' better not be, they already did that in the first one.

How do you know for certain it's someone from the Star Trek mythos?

It's Gary Seven.

He's playing the leader of the Nazi planet.

Serious Question That I Could Probably Find The Answer To In The Time It Took Me To Type This: Is it even confirmed that Cumberbatch's character is a villain?

Yeah, he's a villain, but I have a feeling he's a fellow student/cadet/officer rather than an outside threat

edit: I wiki'ed him and it say's hes the antagonist of Star Trek 2, but I've read it elsewhere too

just throwing it out there, but he looks like he could be a decent Vulcan, but I'm hoping they skip the whole revenge against Spock thing again.

Sybock!

well it's the 12th film, so whoever the villain is it's going to be a better movie than the last one......right?

I don't know who is character will be but I kinda wish that Abrahms had done a Trek based on the ep. City on the Edge of Forever as I believe was speculated.

Are you telling us there's a surprise cameo by Daniel Day-Lewis?

I've never seen "City on the Edge of Forever", but isn't it about time travel? I don't know if I  want another time travel adventure.

unless the Scuzzlebutt pops up, then I'm all for it

The moon?

That's no moon. That's a Cumberbatch.

Cumberbatch sounds like a delightful pet name for a vagina.
It's Garth of Izar.

You heard it here first.

if it was someone a generation or two ahead of Kirk i'd say maaaybe

They aged Pike about twenty years in NuTrek (in "The Menagerie", Pike is supposed to be Kirk's age), so anything goes.

I thought the whole point of Garth was that he was a hero of Kirk who had gone crazy? It wouldn't quite work if they were the same age

I would have loved Gary Mitchell, but I like where Mr. S is going with this.

Neither does changing Scotty's character to Jar Jar Binks work, but with Abrams and his writers there are no rules.

But wait if they change the characters relationship with Kirk to such a degree that it's essentially a different character with the name of a character from the original series, surely thats just the worst kind of blatantly cynical fan-pandering while still essentially doing your own thing anyway?

Oh wait, it's Abrams. Carry on.

Not to nerd out here, but remember, our Kirk is a bit early to the captain's seat by about 6-8 years, compared to Trek Prime. That would have been plenty of time for a young officer to see the exploits of a man not much older than him doing awesome shit, in the original universe. Remember, Kirk became a hero after his FIRST 5 year tour.  Garth can be 8 years older and pull off the hero out here. The difference between a person at 25 and a person at 35 is a matter of makeup (or really hard living).

Okay, now here's a serious suggestion:

Arne Darvin - Klingon Spy

I don't think the concept of Klingon spies in the Federation had been used much beyond Kirk catching one by holding a tribble next to him. That would be kind of fun to take on and reinvent the character. That's all he ever did in Trek anyway, besides going back in time on DS9 trying to kill Kirk with a tribble bomb.

You guys make good points, and Cumbersomesnatch could easily play someone who's a couple years ahead of Kirk.

I like that last suggestion, I'd be pretty disappointed if the Klingons aren't at the very least introduced in the sequel, I mean, now's the time to show just why Kirk hates them so much.

Ummm... shouldn't this new Kirk hate Romulans more than Klingons?

Well, Spock sure should, but I mean, c'mon, if it's not Kirk vs. Klingons then it's not Star Trek

Yes but why would this new Kirk hate Klingons so much exactly?

That's what I'm saying this movie should answer that question. At the very least involve them as a secondary villain. But your right at this point he shouldn't

They already dealt with Kirk's hatred of Klingons in THE UNDISCOVERED COUNTRY. Besides being untrustworthy (as seen in the TV show and films), Klingons were also responsible for killing his only son. Pine's Kirk is obviously not anywhere near that point. At this point they're just a bunch of pricks as far as he's concerned. It would be like a young Picard suddenly expressing his hatred and desire to kill Borg before he got assimilated.

Well as I said at this point, if he's gonna have an innate bigotry against any species, surely it'd be the Romulans.

All I'm saying is despite being a reboot there should be common themes that are reestablished in the new universe. Kirk vs. The Klingons should be one of those themes. You're right, both he and Spock should only hate Romulans at this point, but that was a rogue group and I highly doubt that they'll even pop up again.

I'm not a Trekkie in any sense of the word, and I've only seen TOS episodes that have been mentioned on lists and what not, but is Kirk's hatred of Klingon's only established in the films or is it present in the series also?

Sure but it has to be done naturally and organically not shoved in there as nothing but fan pandering. We've had more than enough of that already.

I don't mind a new story about Kirk vs Klingons, they can take that many places but I rather steer clear of focusing on giving him a reason to hate them. It should be simple as this: They're a bunch of pricks, therefore he hates them.

As for Kirk hating Romulans, I wouldn't buy that. His hatred is directed at a idiot that came from the future, not their entire race.
