X-Men: Second Class Pre-Release Discussion

Nah, I have no idea what they'll call it either.

So, there's a July 18th release date in 2014, with filming starting early next year. And I've watched First Class three times in the last two days due to needing something in the background while I wrote, so it's on my mind.

Mostly, I'm just intrigued by how Fox manages to treat this franchise, and how the chronology and universe has been handled. It's especially interesting considering they're trying to move to the seventies and grow this franchise off the head of another franchise.

What I'm curious about...

1) The X-Men have a deep collection of bad guys not yet seen in the films. Do they go with Mr. Sinister or Apocalypse? Maybe someone else? Perhaps more of the Hellfire Club, who we barely saw in the first film?

2) Do they try to tie a new film into a possible followup to "The Last Stand"? Maybe an Age of Apocalypse twist? Or are we to assume there will never be any more post-Xavier modern day X-films?

3) Jennifer Lawrence is now a massive star, maybe the biggest name in the cast. Will they give her a lot to do to capitalize on this? And how will they do this without severely compromising the continuity?

4) Will we be meeting more younger versions of familiar characters? Young Storm, perhaps?

For the sake of the real-life history, this is probably the most interesting of upcoming comic book sequels (though maybe that's a by-default thing). Curious to see if anyone's looking forward to it, or if there's anything anyone wants to see.

First

All I know is I really don't want it to be Magneto's team vs. The X-Men, so another global threat where they must team up is in order.

A full recasting of all characters not named Magneto, Prof X and Mystique.

Honestly, I want to see some mutants vs. Sentinels, and not just a short sequence that turned out to be a training program.

If any recent tentpole didn't need a sequel, it was this.

Say First Class ended on Chuck and Erick staying pals and opening the school together, you have limitless possibilities. But...where do you go after you already have the two set apart?

Sassy Fassy and McAvoy are so great together that there's no way they weren't doing a sequel. But you're right, which is why for this to work there has to be a threat to MUTANTS, not just humans. That way they can perhaps team up or work together, despite their opposing views.

If Fox knew it was going to be as liked as it was, I'm sure they wouldn't have rushed into that ending.

This is getting a sequel because Fox wants to retain the rights. First Class actually under-performed.

For Christ's sake, please have Erick lose that awful costume!

How well did it do on DVD? and agreed, the costume was terrible, as was that horn thing he added onto the already perfect helmet. That was never on the original helmet was it?

I just want Sentinels. Purple and pink ones. And HUGE. (They come in different colors sometimes, but the purple ones are classic)

Apocalypse down the road would be fun. His philosophy is darwinism, survival of the fittest, so that would be a good way to get the X-Men and Magneto to team up.

I've seen bits of it on HBO, as it's been playing nonstop the past couple of days.

The ending pisses me off so much.  I have no idea why there was such a rush to get to the status quo of the movies.  Even if there wasn't going to be a sequel, what difference did it make to leave Erick and Charles still friend at the end, with perhaps hints of a future split?  Why did we have to confine Charles so quickly to a wheel chair?  It's so clumsy and it detracts from a lot of the great scenes in the movie and the chemistry between the leads.

Yeah the ending is definitely the biggest weakness of the movie. More so than Banshee. Or that chick who spits fireballs with dragonfly wings.

But that pretty much been the story arch for X-Men 2 and 3

It was, just looks way weird in real life.

It really depends if they want to cast a new villain or beef up both sides' teams and go at it

I don't think so, considering Wolverine 2 is coming out first and fulfills the same purpose.  This is coming out for the same reason we got a sequel to Batman Begins -- First Class had great WOM and sold well on DVD.

I'm calling it now: It's going to involve The Brood and the Apollo Program. Climactic action set piece around the Apollo 13 launch.

Gabe T, How about...X-Men: Excelsior!  Just kidding.  Magneto, should lead...The New Hellfire Club, along with The White Queen, Mystique, and Avalanche.  I...Loved seeing Magneto in his...Proper Costume at the end of X-Men First Class.  Ditto for the Helmet complete with horns.  Also, Jean Grey should be in the new film.  Now that the network said...NBC U Later to CHUCK, Yvonne Strahovski, should be cast as...Jean Grey.  Not with full Phoenix force powers, but definitely she should be there, along with fellow new X-Man Cyclops, joining...Beast, Banshee, and Havok.  I think that a new Hellfire Club, could try to stop the launch of Neil Armstrong's trip to the moon.

I say do Days of the Future Past with the "future" being 2014, and having survivors Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) and Storm (Halle Berry) sending Kitty Pryde (Ellen Page) back in time to 1963 to prevent the Kennedy assassination because somehow it affects the future of mutants or something. With Sentinels and Nimrod and everything. That way the old cast meets the new cast, and we get to see Wolverine disintegrated by a Sentinel.

This will never, ever happen.  Which is a shame, because I LOVE this idea.

My money says that Fox plays it cheap. Mystique has a cameo role because she is preggers (obviously with Nightcrawler).  I love the idea of Asteroid M. A full blown Moonraker with mutants.

Other ideas:

Genosha. You have an apartheid government on a island. Atrocities start, send in the XMen.

Lost World in Antartica. Xavier tracks Magneto to Antartica to discover...something less silly than Tarzan. It also get Xavier out of his chair.

And my no chance in hell, but would be interesting: The Yom Kippur war. There is no way that Magneto sits out the surprise attack of Israel. Turns out there is a mutant pushing the conflict with a strike team of mutants, explaining the early Egyptian gains. Of course you get to have Xavier trying to make peace and we will get a fiesty Palestinian mutant who will attempt to show Magneto not all Arabs want the destruction of Israel.

ETA: OOh... This would allow a nice back door for En Sabh Nur, Apocalypse himself, as he is trying to trigger the Biblical apocalypse.

The movie ends with them estranged but nowhere near mortal enemies yet. They can easily go with "we're on separate teams now but we're still mostly cool and meet up to play chess every other week although Erik I must say your rhetoric is increasingly alarming me oh dear I'm going bald" etc. etc.

I don't see what the point is of keeping any real continuity going between these films and the previous set. Retconning Mystique into Chuck's childhood buddy just kind of says, "...eh, who gives a shit?"

If I'm gonna be wrong about something, I want it to be this.  It still seems a bit wonky for a major tentpole, but I like Vaughn's sensibility for the period, and if this frees him up from strict continuity from the original series, while allowing him to take advantage of some of the better casting decisions, my hopes for future X-stallments will skyrocket.

Still, AICN.  Grain of salt and such.

In keeping with the AICN story, thought it relevant to bring this post from a few days back. This is basically what I'd want to happen. If done right it'd free up the First Class franchise in the same way Star Trek split off on its own. Doesn't time travel in DoFP work kinda like Quantum Leap where the future person's "brain" switches with their past self? If they keep that, I expect we'll see a time traveling Wolverine rather than Kitty. That might be pretty cool, actually if young Wolverine ends up in old Wolverine's body and gets killed in the future. Paradoxes! Alternate timelines!

Maybe one day we'd finally get back to the Cyclops/Jean team set during the early 90s when the X-Men wore zubaz and Reebok Pumps.

I don't think the time travel is that out there, as it's really just a plot device. It ensures that FOX doesn't have to bring back all those actors from X-Men 3 with their big paychecks; it has a Wolverine cameo without overwhelming the movie; and it allows the opportunity to reboot a la Star Trek '09

The plot can totally work as a continuation of First Class. Mystique is a bit part of the plot anyway, and have it be Kennedy (instead of Senator Kelly). Maybe have the twist that the X-Men WANT Kennedy to be assassinated, due to a series of domino effects.
