True Blood: Season Does Anyone Care?

Thread Starter

Though there seems to be a lack of interest for this show on these boards, it's still a fantastic guilty pleasure.  The season premiere was great, carrying on a lot of the threads from last season and ramping them up.  Not a single boring subplot.  Though I am pissed that they

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

decided to bring Tara back as a vampire.  I was kinda hoping she'd stay dead.

Anyone else watching this show?

I dvr it so I can fast forward all the boring shit.

I wanted Tara dead.  This brain damaged vamp is dumb.  I'm glad Sookie/Bill are apart.  Maybe they can have a decent storyline worth watching.

Was Alan Ball jealous of GoT?  What's with the sister fucking?

'True Blood' makes the traditional daytime soap operas seem like Shakespeare in comparison.

I channel surfed over to the show a few times and could never stand to keep watching more than a couple minutes....it's just sooooooo fucking bad.

This might have something to do with the fact that there are so many other well written/acted/produced shows on now (GoT, MadMen, Boardwalk Empire, Justified, BB).

I long to have Blade show up and speed up the cancelling of this show.

The only thing I care about in the show is the possibility of Jessica nudity this season.

I thought the same thing last night. It seems like incest is the taboo de jour on cable TV. Did Skarsgard's character bang his relatives in the past or is this a new thing?

Hopefully that now Tara's been turned. She'll go insane and someone will have to give her the True Death, which make everyone watching TB extremely happy.

I don't think it's his literal sister, I took it as she and him both share Godric as their maker. So in that way they're brothers and sisters, not literally. I still enjoy the show, it's a total guilty pleasure. I am very glad that Sam was released in the same ep, I can't do another 3-5 ep run of someone captured again (Jason's horrible subplot last year).

I kinda like the idea of Tara coming back as a vampire, despite the fact I loathe the whiny character. Hopefully she's the big bad of the season along with Russell and they can end her suffering for good at the end of the season ... maybe by the hands of Layfayette?

TRUE BLOOD is stranger, dumber, more accidentally deeply interesting than it ever intends

to be which is why you cant trust all the deep things it's totally not trying to say.

It's a show people will be jealous you got to see the first time around and everyone who's

dissing on now will be bragging about seeing the 1st time.

It's pure camp that's also something else that pays no attention to tiresome things like making

sense and having good taste.

Between BREAKING BAD, ALPHAS, JUSTIFIED, LOST GIRL, GAME OF THRONES and

TRUE BLOOD (and more!) we're in this crazy-amazing golden age.

Anyway, please if you have a minute, drop on by--my recap/commentaries start now with

zaniness but with get much more...weird.

I know it's not his literal sister, but the fact that they were calling each other brother/sister while fucking was dumb even for True Blood.

They are, in fact, related by blood.

Question for fans- I have never watched an episode of this before. I've heard it's about sexy vampires, but it's a bit more "adult" than Twilight.

I need something to watch on HBO Go while I still have a free HBO trial. So would you recommend this to a horror nut like me? What is there to like about the show?

It's not particularly scary, so if you'e looking for a horror classic, this ain't it.  It's a lot of sex, killing, and snark.  Some great characters, some truly irritating -as-FUCK ones in the mix, too.  Give it a go.

I'm just happy Lafayette shaved that thing off his head.

True Blood just became too much for me as it went along, and now it's an occasionally decent trainwreck.  I hate the irritating as fuck characters, the broad style that has lost any remnants of the satire that was once a little sharper and less desperate, etc.  I'll watch the clips of Meloni on Youtube once the season is over, because it is truly the seasonal antagonists that make up for the regular cast (Fiona Shaw's hammy witch saved a lot of last season from its blandness).

Bald Lafayette is definitely an improvement.

I'm looking forward to having Russel Edgington back in the mix.  He was a good villain, and it looks like it will be between him and the Authority as this season's big bad, which could mean a "vampire civil war" is brewing, which could be awesome.

The thing with Eric fucking his "sister" was kinda cheap, but I thought they explained it pretty well that she wasn't his biological sister, just someone who got turned into a vampire by his maker, so it didn't seem that taboo after all.

Terry's subplot looks like it could be pretty interesting, since we'll finally learn some things about his Iraq experience.  But I feel like the subplots are all a bit too disjointed for my liking.  Season two had lots of plot threads that eventually all came together, so it would be nice to see all these plots maybe come together at some point.

watch deadwood or the Wire if you haven't.  Not worth your time at all.

Or Rome, The Sopranos, Generation Kill, Game of Thrones...

Seriously. I watch True Blood because I enjoy its campy, way over the top, naked fest, 50 Shades of Bon Temps. HBO makes thought provoking shows and then they make True Blood.

I'm in the same "Should I invest time in this show or not?" camp.   Would a fan of "American Horror Story" like this show?

Do characters still fuck with as much wanton abandon in this show now as they seemed to in the first season?

Aah, see I answered that question without thinking about the other stuff HBO has to offer.  If you haven't watched Game of Thrones, that should be your priority.

They are two totally different shows.  If you are a fan of trashy soap operas with better sex scenes and more kills, you'll have fun with it.

If anything moreso.

I am not sure when they have time to work, or bathe, or feed themselves with the amount of fornication going on. Also, the amount of birth control methods going around must be staggering.

(Granted the dead probably can't have kids, but then Twilight showed us differently)

Well, on the one hand, it's my job to recap the show for Indie Wire this season.

On the other hand, I got the job because I LOVE the show.

I love that it pays no mind to boring shit like making any fucking sense beyond crazy-ass True Blood sense,

of being remotely realistic because what could be more boring when you can be colorfully psychotic, of being the only

show willing to just GO THERE with a crazy-hot Vampire Queen who plays Yahtzee, exploding vampires, white trash

werepanthers, a cannibalistic Burning Man of evil, fist-fucking hearts out of chests, and you know this is endless.

In short, its a one-show remedy to the endless, watch-Don-stare-out-a-window brain-freezing pretense and

stifling High Seriouness of Mad Men.

It's 60 minutes of sexed up, neo-Hammer lunacy that will never tell me how important it is.

I agree, True Blood is just FUN. There's a time for serious art and there's a time for sexy hilarious garbage!

I wasn't surprised they are keeping Tara around, I always figured she'd at least stick around as a ghost that only Lafayette could see or something. Curious to see how it plays out, I think a lot of fans are furious that she's sticking around but I think it will just produce more entertaining drama.

Series justified it existence a long time ago with Stephen Root's arc in Season 1, and the line "Bullshit. God has horns."

Gloriously, deliriously trashy. It's worth the watch.

Oh definitely. Honestly, tv needs shows like True Blood. I've never gotten bored with it. It is indeed gloriously, deliriously trashy. And worth every second of it. Worth watching without a doubt. Very much looking forward to this season's storyline. Recently finished all the Sookie Stackhouse series books and want to see it on the screen.

Is the show still following the books even remotely?

Not plotwise exactly. But they still share many of the same characters and Sookie's still has Fairy blood in the books.

Being trashy fun is alot different than recommending it for someone to watch.  *With limited time.

Yeah. True Blood is one of the best comedies HBO has produced in the past ten years, but it only works because it's played mostly straight.

True Blood is just a dumb soap opera, only it's weekly instead of daily with a bigger budget.  It's a lot like Passions meets Dark Shadows.

If Passions had vampires ripping out peoples spinal cords on live TV I might consider watching it! Plus Spike loved Passions, and who can argue with that bleached bastard.

I like to think of True Blood as HBO's 'fun' series. It has, and had, many excellent shows, but who can sit back and watch a season of The Wire and really call it 'fun'?

Thanks for the input, guys. I think I need a "fun" show right now.

This show, while maddening (and maddeningly dumb) at times, is a total blast.  Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

If Jessica gets naked this season the show will deserve a damn Emmy.  Deborah Ann Woll is a vision.

VAMPIRE BIBLE! God is a vampire! And here I would've thought they'd stop with faeries.

"Which testament: old or new?"

"De ORIGINAL testahment, suh."

Oh, and in vampire religion, VAMPYR = Amen.

Awesome.

These first two episodes are a serious improvement over last season.

The Authority says they have this problem with religious fanatics who interpret the "Vampire Bible" literally (Sanguinistas), but then they start their meeting with a very ritualized prayer to Lilith and the blood drinking ceremony??

Must be Catholic Vampires, you know, do as I say or THE TRUE DEATH FOR YOU types.

The current Authority is Vatican II, basically. Sanguinistas are Hutton Gibson types.

This may be way too high brow an interpretation, but perhaps they're trying to shed light on the hypocrisy of organized religion?

See, I almost checked out of the show after season three, but found last season to be shockingly fun.  These episodes have been dull.

Season Four was a spectacular trainwreck but this really isn't Masterpiece Theater by any stretch of the imagination.

I'm not sure how to rank seasons of a show like this.  I mean, season 1 game me Lizzy Caplan naked, season 2 gave me Rogue.  But it's an awful show, aside from all things Jessica.  I just don't want to miss the next splendid nudity!

Holy crap I now have my first real reason to maybe give this show a try - is she in every season?!?!?

Rain Dog, she's a goddess, and in every season after the first!  The fact that she came real close last season gives me hope!  Her story lines are the only ones that surpass "guilty" pleasure into actual pleasure.  She really is the only part of the show that is worth while, but she's SO amazing.
