Falling Skies Season 2: Fall Harder

Season 2 of TNT's sci-fi drama Falling Skies is getting ready to start.  iO9 has some interesting articles up about what's gonna be different this season:

Falling Skies Season 2

So basically, it sounds like the new showrunner kinda payed attention to the show's problems in Season 1 and addressed them all in Season 2...

  • No more stuck in school - the 2nd Mass is on the run constantly.
  • Attacking the alien structure didn't hurt the invaders, it just pissed them off and made them want to wipe out humans more.
  • The 2nd Mass loses the ability to use the alien radio waves and mech bullets.
  • Tom (Noah Wyle) comes back as a bad ass after escaping from alien imprisonment, all thoughts of negotiation with the aliens is gone, Tom's all about killing them all.
  • More alien mythos and explanations of wtf the aliens are doing.

Let's also hope they fixed all the "dumb kids doing dumb shit" problem that plagued all of Season 1.

Season 2 starts this sunday on TNT at 9pm.

Is the wise-crackin' rapist still around? He's so witty.

Oh yeah.  Pope is still there, and playing a bigger role than ever.

Humph. I'll just wait for my Turtldove-styled alternate WW2 series personally.

I didn't enjoy the Pope-can-do-everything aspect last year, on top of the incongruously maudlin themes.  He'll make a better actual antagonist, I hope that's where they're taking his arc.

If the show actually answers questions as to what happened to Noah Wyle while he was with the aliens, then the show will already have exceeded my expectations.

Moon Bloodgood? Moon Bloodgood. Then I'm in, one more try.

Jail trained gourmet cook alien fire-bombing wise-crackin' rapist, thankyouverymuch.

I'll give this a few more episodes for The Librarian's sake.

Pope is this show's Sawyer.  As for the rape, I'm sure she was "asking for it," so no harm done.  (retcon anyone?)

I went to bed early instead of watching.  Looks like everyone else did too.

I watched it, and actually liked it a fair amount. It felt like a step up from last season, in the sense that I didn't completely forget about all of it as soon as I saw it. The scene where they removed a parasite from Wyle's eye was all kinds of squirm-inducing.

Honestly, it was a big step in the right direction.

This show is never going to be what it could be due to a myriad of factors but I saw enough improvement to bring me back. Personally, I blame my childhood attachment to the syndicated War of the Worlds of the late 80's/early 90's for sticking around.

Yep, big improvement. Less chit chat, less humans dicking around with other humans, and more blowing up aliens. As a buddy said, what the hell is so hard about having humans blowing up aliens or robots or vice versa in a show about humans versus aliens and robots?

It seems that the powers that be threw some more money at the series (at least for these 2 episodes?)

Also, according to the reviewer over on io9, these 2 episodes were written by some ex-Battlestar Galactica writers...hopefully there will be more.

The show added Weddle and Thompson as writers, as well as a new showrunner, and it's a definite step in the right direction.

I watched the whole first season because I'm a completist, not because of the chatty "let me tell you everything about who I am as a character and what my life has been like up until now" prattling about.  Should I watch season 2, y or n?

No promises, but so far, so good.

So say we all.

Big step in the right direction, though I'm still not entirely sure the thematic point of the alien ship interactions, which felt very rushed through. Though I suppose it ultimately ends with Tom saying 'Fuck this shit. Let's kill em all.'

And I understand Pope's a good shot, but Will Patton should've strung him up and chopped off his balls by this point for being such an insubordinate dickhole.

Christ, the more fucked up kid looks to be making a return. Dammit. All the kid actors got coaches over the break it would seem, too. Much better across the board.

Still, I find it to be a more satisfying experience than The Walking Dead. At least these guys are proactive.

Solid couple of episodes. The show will always suffer from the limitations of being on TNT (which draws lines like a network rather than a cable channel), but I was mostly entertained and rarely groaned, so that's an upgrade on season one.

The middle son was especially good while carrying the bulk of the dramatic load. He seems more detached and less wooden this season.

So far, so good.

As long as they keep away from annoying child storylines I think this can be decent.  Getting rid of the black kid and making the other kids hardened fighters was a huge plus.

I thought they were going to destroy that thing that went in Wyle's eye?  Why bother keeping it?

And I believe Pope isn't a rapist but a guy who allowed the rapes to happen.  Not a big difference but still.

That was my interpretation. He was too focused on getting his jollies killing skitters to engage in raping.

caught up with the first two episodes and damn I guess I'll give season 2 a whirl.

Was a touching service for sniper boy. Very eloquent.

Hope Pope doesn't go nomad for too long. The Berzerkers just aren't the same without him.

By "The Berzerkers", you of course mean "The Show"?

I assume they realize that w/o him, the cast is overflowing with blandly agreeable people blandly agreeing with each other (or politely disagreeing).

I would agree with you, if it wasn't for the quiet Asian guy. There's more to him than meets the eye. Who knows what demons lurk within?

Gotta say, good one tonight. Really felt for Will Patton at the end.

The Skitter deaths were more gooey. Hope that trend continues. The harnessing sequence was suitably creepy.

Could have done without that dumbass who rapped. Wish he'd stay on sanitation duty but it sounds like he won't. He better get clipped soon.

Surprised I was so entertained by a Popeless episode.

Some great practical effects in this thing. Easily something I can recommend to friends. Not the best written thing in the world, but I'll take it.

My view is pretty much exactly in line with Moltisanti. So far, this season has been MUCH better. White Rapper Guy was wincingly bad, a classic example of TNT trying to be "with it" and "hip".  They do this throughout their programming, and it always leads to guffaws.

Yeah this show has been a bright spot for a summer without much to watch.

Very true, this is the ideal time of year for a show like Falling Skies. As absurd as it sometimes gets I do find it more realistic than The Newsroom.

The 2nd Mass. continues to be the worst run "military" unit since our simian ancestors first picked up sticks and started hitting each other, but this season is a definite improvement. At least they stop being agressively suicidal.

All three episodes have been so much better than anything last year. It's almost a different show.

The AV Club neatly summed up my problem with this episode:

Quote:
While Falling Skies has certainly been a better show over the course of this season, one of its central problems remains in play—the fact that, for the most part, the show’s just not as good when people are speaking.

The generic banter seemed especially generic this week, although I did like the possibility introduced that the aliens are subservient to another oppressor. I hope it leads to an expanded scope and isn't just a ruse.

Still feels like the same show to me.  Not necessary to watch and almost groan-inducing when it pops on my DVR.  I watch it with glazed eyes and raise an eyebrow once or twice.  I don't know why I continue to subject myself to wholly mediocre, castrated sci-fi but I feel drawn to it.

That being said - 3rd season is a go.

The last episode made me angry in all the old ways. I have no idea why I'm still watching this.

Because ALPHAS doesn't start for a couple of weeks?

Alphas did a pretty spectacular about face, didn't it?

Sure did. I'm excited about the new direction. Although they brought in a new showrunner, which is odd as it did well in the ratings.

Strathairn's speech was one of the biggest "Oh shit!" TV moments of last season. I'm really excited for this one.

Like those leaves would so conveniently be covering her genitals. Sure thing, TNT, sure thing.

The best part of waking up is Moon Bloodgood in your cup.. or hospital bed.

700

this should rotate when clicked on

Sorry dudes, I tried to stick with it but watching it makes me feel so bored. I'm out.

Almost there.  One more week and I may ditch it.

Those little crawly things coming out of the mouth was a bit of a jolt. Tough break for Jamil.

Yeah I first recognized that guy from Harper's Island, so I figured he'd die eventually. At least he made it halfway through season 2.

The worst thing is that we're going to have Nihilist Lourdes for the rest of the season, and so far she's even more annoying than Praise Jesus Lourdes.

Did they not air an episode this past week? Last one I saw was eps 7. Their website doesn't list anything further than that. Are they being bumped for Olyp coverage?

Pretty sure it's because of the Olympics, TNT likely didn't want to burn a new episode against the first weekend of coverage.

Fret not though, looks like this week they'll get to Charleston. Yeehaw!

Well I'm pretty sure that was Locke from LOST greeting folks in Charleston in the previews for next week, so next week's episode should be a fun time.
